Fav developer thread

Why no Namco love? Soulcalibur, Tekken, Xenosaga, Tales series... Namco>all...except maybe SNK.

Soulcalibur USED to be good... SC1 and SC2 were great... SC3 was absolutely terrible, and in comparison to SC3, SC4 is a good game. But its still a far cry from what SC1 and SC2 were.. Soulcalibur Legends is a joke too.

Tekken USED to be good (I never liked it)... but Tekken 4 was a total wash to the point that the entire T4 staff was sent off to make other games (namely SC3/SC4). And from what I am hearing, Tekken 6 is terrible... and Death by Degrees as atrocious.

Xenosaga sucked from what I have heard. Xenogears was good, as it was made when Square was still developing software (now they are a publisher, and only develop FF and KH); but Xenosaga was shit compared to that. You forget, it was planned for 5 games, and was cancelled after 3 because it was so bad...

Tales WAS a great series... my favorite RPG series of all time... Tales of Phantasia is my absolute favorite RPG of all time. Tales of Destiny, Tales of Destiny 2, Tales of Eternia, Tales of Legendia... these are all great games. But Tales of Symphonia? Pure shit. Tales of the Abyss? Worst Tales game ever made. Tales of Vesperia looks like a carbon copy clone of Abyss; so I have no interest in that either.

Being a semi Xeno fan, I'll say that Episode 1 of Xenosaga was good. The only reason people bitched and moaned about that one was because of the cutscene length. Episode 2 is what really killed the series. The reason being that was the point in time in which important staff members (the EX-Square employees who were responsible for Xenogears) began to be removed from the project; so they cut the production of Ep IV, V and VI while having to alter the production of II and III considering the shrink in staff. So, needless to say, Episode 2 is what really gave the series the horrible name it has. Episode 3 claimed to slightly restore the series, but with all the shit that happened with Episode 2, no one (including myself) really cared about what Episode 3 had to offer.

I'm pretty much a Blizzard fanboy. They set a nice example on how to sellout without being a douche like EA

I actually quite like Sega as a developer. What qualifies them for your shitlist, Shinobi?

~ Colin

The raping of my childhood gaming icon and their very own mascot (Sonic) plays a big part. That and their horrible habit of rushing games out into the market for the sake of making money rather than taking time to complete the game fully. The death of the Dreamcast was the death of Sega's glory days. Only two games continued to be good after that, Jet Set Radio Future and the Virtua Fighter series.

I would just like to throw in here that Europe got XS2 despite not ever getting XS1 or XS3. The game got completely ignored, but at least we got the preorder DVD as standard. And I watched all of it, all 5 goddamn hours.

Did you play Viking: Battle for Asgard?

What about the Shenmue series?

These are some of my favourite games.

Shenmue was awesome. However, that was during the Dreamcast era, when Sega was still releasing decent titles.

As for Viking, I didn't fancy it much. My complaint towards Sega goes toward it's JPN division more so than it's US one. Condemned 1 and 2 weren't bad.

I doubt anyone has said it but...
Black Isle.
Fallout / Fallout 2. Srsly.

Given thats all they did//they're non existant now... xD
They still deserve that I'd say.

hate to be a douche niichts but i thought bethesda made fallout. did they change names or something?

as for the hate for sega. With the exception of virtua fighter they have let all their big ips turn to poopies.

Shenmue was awesome.

I have Shen Mue 1 and 2, and although i played (didnt finish part 2) both, i never quite got what the fuss was all about... the gameplay seemed slow, boring and uninteresting. And the storie wasnt so brilliant either... it was just... different...

I do like Sega though, back in the 8/16/32/64-bit days i was a nintendo boy, but the dreamcast made me a bit of a sega fan. shame it went down.

Fav Developers
Naughty Dog (Crash, Jak, and Uncharted)
Insomniac (Spyro, Ratchet & Clank, and Resistance)
Tri-Ace (Valkyrie Profile and Star Ocean)
Square-Enix (Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy)
Namco (Xenosaga, Soulcalibur)

Devs I'm watching but not keeping my hopes up for
EA (Mirror's Edge looks great)

Poor Shenmue was ahead of its time...Over all, Sega used to be an awesome developer, but now...They seem to WANT us to hate them. I will say, F-Zero GX for Cube was probably the best game they've done in the past couple years.

Well, as for me, my favorites include:

Konami (Metal Gear Series, Sparkster Series)
Bandai/Namco (SC, Tekken, Tenkaichi, Kinnikuman Series)
Nintendo (Fire Emblem, Smash Brothers, Zelda, Metroid, Kirby)
Square Enix (Kingdom Hearts, some Final Fantasies, Bushido Blade, Star Ocean)
Blizzard (WoW, maybe Diablo 3?)
Capcom (Mega Man X, Zero, Resident Evil, almost all their fighting games)
SNK (KOF series, Fatal Fury)
Treasure (Dynamite Headdy, Gunstar Heroes)
Atlus (Odin Sphere, Persona, Trauma Center, Arcana Heart)
Clover (dead) -(Viewtiful Joe, Okami)
Hudson (Bomberman, Bloody Roar)
Bethesda (Oblivion, maybe Fallout 3?)

Thin Ice:
Sega (Quit whoring yourself out, and make decent games again)
Lion Head Studios (Fable II better be good)
Midway (Never was a big fan, all their games seem like they have low budgets)
EA (Too many mindless sports games, and not enough for the non-casual crowd)
Bungie (Is Halo really the only game they can do? It's good, but where's the rest?)
Studio Gigante (Burn in hell)

Not much else I can think of off the bat, but this'll do for now.

Thumbs Up
Atlus (SMT/Persona, Odin Sphere, Arcana Heart, these guys always have something surprisingly refreshing up their sleeve)
Namco-Bandai (Tales, Soulcalibur)
Cyber-Connect2 (.hack, Narutimate series; even though I hate Naruto with a passion, the games are damn good fun)
Team Shangai Alice (Touhou!! Danmaku games are my new love)
Tri-Ace (Star Ocean, Valkyrie Profile, Infinite Undiscovery is turning out to be pretty good too)
Nippon Ichi (Disgaea, Makai Kingdom, etc.)
Valve (I gotta admit, Team Fortress 2 was well worth the purchase. I haven't played Portal yet, but ought to before my friends kill me. Left 4 Dead is looking AWESOMELY fun).
SNK (KoF, Metal Slug, Samurai Shodown, all the good old classics and even some of the new ones they're releasing)
Arc Systems (Guilty Gear, Battle Fantasia, BlazBlue; I was a GGX2 player for a while, but I wasn't TOO hardcore into it, and I sort of went on GG hiatus during the long string of GGX2 rehashes that kept getting released. To be honest I'm getting excited for GG2, and I'm loving how BlazBlue is looking. I'm also mildly interested in Battle Fantasia).
Clover (I really enjoyed Okami. I wasn't too crazy about Godhand, though the engine looked fun...the game was just kind of cheesy and tasteless)
Capcom (Resident Evil 4 and Devil May Cry 4 were both really fun, and I'm interested in trying out Dead Rising. Wasn't too crazy about Street Fighter, but SFIV is starting to look amazing. Also, Phoenix Wright is awesome.)

Poop List
Blizzard (Played WoW 'til level 70 with the promise of "the real game starting", which only captured my interest for about a month; otherwise, the game likes to poop on you and force you into plugging 168 hours a week into the game JUST so you can start to feel mildly cool. Liked Starcraft, but have little faith in Starcraft II EVER coming out. I'm impartial to Diablo)
Square-Enix (Ever since Nomura started heading the Final Fantasy franchise, it's just been oozing with homoerotic pretty-boy parades to shell out to all the fangirls out there. Case and point, Kingdom Hearts and Dirge of Cerberus)
Midway (Every time I look at all the students in my college who major in Game Art and Design and I wonder why all of them just want to make FPS games and no one wants to make fighting games, I see footage of MK vs DC and remember just why Americans just can't ever make good fighting games)

Devs I like

Stardock- GalCiv II is great
Paradox
AM2 (though rest of Sega can DIAF)
Valve

Those are companies that support their games and make sure they get it right.

Soul Calibur is technically made by "Project Soul"... not Namco/Bandai...

As well, the same goes for the Tales Series, there are two different teams on that list...

Team 1 (the good team): Project Melfes
Team 2 (the bad team): Project Tales

While they were originally one team, they aren't now.

Dead Rising is awesome but it has so many flaws. The characteristic can't move and shoot. Left stick aiming. Rather clunky controls. Bad survivor AI.

I pretty much agree with what generally is being said here. Sega felt weak since the DC...and they have most definitely ruined Sonic. Hasn't Arcade and PSN games shown that 2D can still be great fun? I wish they would just do a HD2D sonic game. Sonic 2, 3&Knuckles were among its crowning moments.

I like Konami for Pro Evolution Soccer, Silent Hill (although I dunno what I think of the new one yet) and Metal Gear Solid is one of my all time favourite series.

Nintendo, hmm, Super Mario Bros 1 & 3, Super Mario World, LoZ Link to the Past, Ocarina of time, Super Mario Kart, Super Metroid, Metroid Prime, Smash Bros. I would consider classics.

Recently, I have felt patronized by them. The Wii has toned down games so much because of it's ridiculous controller. Metroid Prime 3 feels like a joke and the fact there is human interaction has KILLED my perceptions on Samus Aran. I thought she'd be a take-no-shit-from-no-one yet she's as mute and wet behind the ears as Link is...

Mario Sunshine was a fucking disgrace. Wind Waker was irritating and Twilight Princess I detest simply because it feels like it was built on the WW engine - so what took them so fucking long to get the game out; had it come out in 2004-2005 I would have vouched for it being GameCubes crowning moment alongside RE4...but that shit being delayed and Wii-Ported was a letdown and the game is uninspired. I feel Nintendo's E3 conference shows exactly what Nintendo's intentions are; fuck gaming, it's all about waggling a remote mindlessly at a screen.

I haven't played anything from Clover...but Platinum Games has my ears pricked. Mad World looks sick, Bayonetta is gonna be a DMC clone and I couldn't give a fuck if people mark it down for that - that shit better be crazy.

Killer7 is one of my personal favourites. That plot was so crazy I was in the zone all the way through and I will worship Goichi Suda if he pairs up with Kojima on something.
