How did you establish 'favorite' characters?

Aesthetics?
Execution difficulty?
Tournament tier rankings?
Back-story?
Unique moves?
Weapon type?

What sorts of things most accounted for what characters you ended up playing most often. For me, it was mostly aesthetics. Characters in SC have such long move lists that it would take forever to experiment with all of them. Then I would try a few of the cool/hot looking characters, and whichever one seemed to perform impressively when randomly mashing buttons became my main.

Aesthetics? Yep
Execution difficulty? Execution is just a matter of practice to me.
Tournament tier rankings? No.
Back-story? No.
Unique moves? They just have to be fun to play for me.
Weapon type? Yes. I'll never play Raphael because I hate rapiers and I'll never play Zwei because he's too much of a pussy to fight for himself.

I pick my characters based on looks and how they play. I played Siegfried because when I first played him in SCIV he was extremely fun to play and I always liked the generic warrior guy. In SCV I play him because I'm more comfortable with him than the rest of the cast. I don't play Cervantes because I think he's the most boring character I've ever tired to play in a game ever and I always thought he was a pirate that was trying too hard. I play Hilde because she is the coolest female to me and actually wears armor. She's also kind of fun to play so that's a plus.

Aesthetics? -Yes
Since I do pick my characters by looks, I will most likely pick a character if they're good looking and not monster looking.

Execution difficulty?-Not really
In the end though, I think it depends on how high the execution is. For example I tried playing as aPat, but his justs are annoying so Im kinda turned off by him. Then again, I put more effort in learning him.

Tournament tier rankings?- I don't know them or care to know them.
I don't really keep up with tournaments to begin with, and I don't think I have enough knowledge or experience to judge a character by tiers.

Back-story?- Not really, it's more of a "oh look, they have a back story" think
I don't really care all too much since it is a fighting game.

Unique moves?- Somewhat
If that include things like "Angel Step" or something like that, then sure. I like characters that use a 214 or 236 motion like Pyrrha or aPat.

Weapon type?- Nah.
Nope. That's all.

Asthetics? - Yes.
Execution - 50/50
Tournament tier? - No.
Back story? - Yes.
Weapon choice - ...Ah, well I never really cared about weapon choice, but katanas are pretty sweet. I personally prefer Katanas or Bare handed.

Yoshimitsu is just simply unique. I like him for his crazy mixup playstyle he can have in combat.

Yoshimitsu is a wise ninja. Armed with a plethora of wise quotes and a very unique sword and a good, merciful heart, he leads a band of robin-hood like theives called Manjitou.
Yes, story will matter to me. I like good characters. When I play a character, I want to... Almost live it out- become that character. And for that, the story must be good.
Asthetically, some designs are not that great, but overall, I love the tradition of changing his look every game.

Namu namu namu!

I'm going to put this on a scale. 1 has the least impact on my preference while 10 has the most.

Aesthetics? 10
Execution difficulty? 6 (Easy is better)
Tournament tier rankings? 1
Back-story? 3
Unique moves? 8
Weapon type? 10 (This is essentially aesthetics, still...)

Just pick Mitsurugi or Pat...

Aesthetics--->Unique designs usually catches my attention first. After all, details that the developers worked hard to put into the characters should be appreciated. And I can't help but like certain things such as... hats. (>;^^)

Execution/Tournament Tier---> Course not. If I really like a character, then I will put in the time to practice. As for tourny tier, I've always been a firm believer that it's the player that wins the match. (Omega has been my idol because of that).

Back Story--->It's nice to know 'more' about your character. I loved Talim's backstory as a selfess and kind girl who is risking her life to help restore the world to normal. Her willingness to help heal that sick boy at the watermill village, even though it hurt her link with the wind, made me respect her and like her even more.
Even though I love Zwei and his playstyle, having everything in his profile listed as unknown... makes me alittle sad. Especially since I know his real name is probably not even Z.W.E.I (>-__-)

Unique Moves---->Yes actually. It makes certain chars more appealing to me. I loved Talim's leaps and twirls and Zwei's ability to delay Ein.

Weapon Type---> Nope.

Personality--->I like chars with certain traits that makes me admire/respect them. Talim's compassion, Raphael's determination, pride and confidence, and Zwei's sarcasm along with his strong attitude and understanding on certain subjects (his lecture with Pat). I could never stand playing certain chars like Cassandra and Yun-Seong who are way too cocky and loud for my preference.

I did not really establish my favorites. I think is like love, you don't pick the person you want. The same way you don't pick your favorite, you just fall for him/her. At least in my case.

For example, I can say My favorites are Mitsurugi, Nightmare and Astaroth. I always loved ninja but never liked Samurai, however here I am, with a samurai as favorite. Why because Mitsu has become more and more badass. Same for Nightmare, I don't like armored characters or big swords, but I fell in love with a black knight with a absurd sized sword.

I could make a list of things my "perfect" character could have...and then fall for other completely different. Of course aesthetics and gameplay are important, but is not that aesthetics have to be X way or the gameplay has to be Y. I never thought I could enjoy a grappler and now Astaroth is one of my main.

In the end is only I must feel overall satisfied with the characters. I certanly can't see a pattern in my choices.

honestly now....i choose my character.........CAUSE HE SHOWED ME ........THE PRICE OF......JUSTICE!!!!!!!!!!!!........as planned>_>

Generally in a new 3d game I just look for a character with an annoying low.

I jumped around a lot back in SCI. Maxi played most like Jacky from VF2, so I settled on him since his lows seemed to be annoying.

Now he doesn't really have any good lows, but he's still fun to play. Oh well.

Just whoever I feel like I am best and can learn more with. Since I'm starting to main Edge Master I like being able to use other people's combos against them saying I am able to get their style within a match :P

I like to try all characters first. Aesthetics influence a little in my choice, I kind of like malfested characters, but for me the mach up must be comfortable to play, I don,t care if the execution is hard.

Aesthetics?
10. I figure, I'm gonna be spending a lot of time looking at this character, so I should pick someone I like looking at. That's why I hardly ever use male characters.

Execution difficulty?
5. I'm not crazy about stupidly hard execution. But if I like a character, I might use them in spite of it.

Tournament tier rankings?
1. I don't really follow tiers, but if a character is so horribly bad and underpowered, I wouldn't make much effort to learn to play her seriously.

Back-story?
1. I'm interested in the story, but it doesn't really influence which character is my favorite.

Unique moves?
5. I guess I like watching really cool moves, I suppose it ties into the weapon type. But even cool moves get stale after you've seen them done 100 times.

Weapon type?
8. I picked Li Long in SB just because of how unique and awesome his weapon was. I picked Natsu now because she's basically a modified buffed Taki.

Aesthetics?
8- I think is important to see something good while fighting, so if the character looks too menacing or evil make me step back a little, the main reason why I like Sophitia is the holy like feeling she gives.
Execution difficulty?
5- Is not very important, I can handle at least in some degree most of the characters, but I really dislike Just Frames and overly complex moves.
Tournament tier rankings?
3- I don't really care much but, sometimes make me step back in some characters.
Back-story?
7-Knowing your character well is fun, I like to play good oriented characters or neutral, hardly ever a evil one, but I do like complex characters so is kind important.
Unique moves?
2-Not so much, is cool to have some uniqueness yet nothing overwhelming.
Weapon type?
9-If I like the weapon there is a bigger chance I stick with the char if I dislike I hardly try the char.

Aesthetics?
No. I only use custom characters so a large portion of that is negated... Animations and such? Still no.

Execution difficulty?
It can be a barrier. I don't like aPat much anyway, but his execution needs have stop me using him much at all.

Tournament tier rankings?
I settle into a main long before such a thing can exist.

Back-story?
I only use custom characters so...

Unique moves?
Depends what you mean... The aesthetics of attacks, no...

Weapon type?
No.

The only thing that decides my main is who I have the most success using, and who I have the most fun using. This tends to result in me using characters that fit my aggressive style.
Initially, I'll just try everyone (In Soulcalibur, this would be as I make characters for them) ...Whoever turns out to be the best is my best.

I main X-23 in Marvel, and of all characters across all games, she suits me the most... but if I were to think about it, I really dislike her. She's an archetypal, boring character with not much backstory and little of interest to her appearance... She's also considered low tier, but she's the only character in that entire game that does what I need.
Her execution level is such that I don't have to concentrate on it, and I can be thinking of whatever else I need to... but beyond that, it's not easy to explain exactly why using her consistently feels entirely natural, even now when I have barely played Marvel in over a year.
It's like an extension of my own body, if that makes sense, and it's very rare that even Viola feels like that.
