Missing character discussion

I have to second Captain_Insano here. One thing i hated about tekken (i used to love the old tekken games) was all their clone chars which totally watered down the roster. Don't get me wrong i like big rosters and the more chars a game has the better. But i don't want like 3 versions of the same char, no clone chars.
The good thing about soul calibur is that every char is very unique and has his own remarkable style. The path they are going right now with all the alexandrias (most of all having both pyrrha and omega) is already a step in the wrong direction.
So imo, bringing back vets would be a horrible decision.

I think the fact that many of the characters that veterans fell in love with are now gone, combined with the fact that pretty much ALL of the new characters have stupid designs both aesthetically and move-wise, you got yourself some angry fans.

The fact that they pretty much unanimously dropped the low tiers (Zas, Mina, Talim, Rock), to me this doesn't show innovation, but laziness. I consider it lazy because instead of dropping the low tiers they could have spent some time tweaking them out to properly balance them out.

And as far as story reasons are concerned to not include some characters, that's just an excuse to be lazy. They could have easily written a story that included all the old veterans (who cares if characters are in their 50's, look at Tekken), but instead.

I know they were under time constraints and all that, but at the end of the day they produced a half-finished product, so I really don't care why it ended up this way, only pissed that it did.

Now take a look at some of the new characters (ones that don't replace a veteran).

Viola.. I don't even know where to begin. In a nutshell, her move style doesn't fit in with SC at all. She feels like she came from another game altogether. Same thing with ZWEI, he doesn't belong in SC. Ezio is one of the most boring characters I've ever seen.

The replacement characters are also boring. Xiba is nowhere near as interesting to play as Kilik was, has a shorter move list, and is way too spam happy IMO. The sisters are too much alike now, they both feel like Sophitia with a few minor differences here and there. None of Cassandra translated over to either of them in terms of moves. Pat is also, yet again a boring-as-fuck character to play.

All in all, I've gotten bored with this game really quick. At first I hated it, then I loved it, now I'm bored with it completely. I can't put my finger on it, but something about this game made me get bored with it real quick. It might be the mechanics, not sure. But one thing I can say for sure though is that I absolutely can't stand JG. JG rewards execution too heavily, SC was never about hard execution in the past.

Basically SC has turned into something that is almost, but not quite like SC. I'm not saying sc5 is bad per se, but it's no longer the game that I fell in love with.

This is all my opinion of course. Flame on if you wish.

SC was never about hard execution? I believe getting ics consistently requires some decent execution and is rather required to play Ivy in four. Same for half of Setsuka's movelist requires good execution, there were more just frames in the older games etc so in my opinion SC5 is less execution than the rest.

I, too, agree with Insano's admittedly drunken ramblings. It's one of the reasons I like SCV. Save for Pyrrha/Oprah, every characters is completely different from the others in terms of what gameplay niche they carve out. I like it this way :D

Only some characters had hard execution, like IVY in 4. Now in 5, every character requires hard execution JG.

Soul Calibur was the perfect chance for long gone characters to return, especially when the current director started as a fan of the series, I had high hopes for that, Imagine my surprise when I found out, that, not only these characters weren't returning but also he got rid of a plenty more.

Long gone characters I was expecting to see again:

Hwang;
Li Long;
Arthur;
Olcadan;
Seong Han Myeong.

Other characters he got rid of:

Sophitia;
Taki;
Seong-Mina (all these three, the first female characters ever introduced in the series);
Amy;
Cassandra;
Setsuka;
Talim;
Xianghua (SC1 protagonist);
Zasalamel.

Not to say he failed to introduce other potential characters like, Bangoo, Johan Durer, Salia, Gisele, Li Long's son... Instead we got characters that are basically clones from the original ones that are missing...

Dear Daishi, if isn't broken, DON'T CHANGE IT (to worst, that is)...

I do agree that if it was a "next generation" game, they should have brought in the obvious next generation characters. While I have always welcomed Patroklos, and Pyrrha, Bangoo and Li Long's son not being in bothered me a little bit, as they've existed before Pyrrha and Patroklos.

I've given Leixia and Xiba the benefit of the doubt as they are next-generation characters. In technicality, Ivy is also a next generation character, and then you have Natsu.......who is the opposite case, but I've found her addition to have potential for development in the near future. Plus, she has a better personality.

Then there is this question: How do they play differently from their predecessor? From a technical point-of-view, they all play differently from their predecessors, but if you were someone who wasn't looking in detail, and just seeing what kind of moves they have that fit them as an individual, only one does that: Xiba. Leixia is mini-Xianghua (obviously), while Natsu is Taki 2.0.

The only one that REALLY bothered me was Alpha Patroklos. Just laziness everywhere around that character, but then I thought "If Alpha Patroklos is the true Patroklos, maybe then we will finally have 1 S&S user for the next game", so I brushed it all off. Still sucks that the concept of Setsuka's weapon (sword hidden under an umbrella) has been downplayed to just glorifying the Battōjyutsu style, and we have enough of those already in other games.

Maybe in the next game, Bangoo and Li Long's son will be in. Time will tell.

I choose characters based on who I like, then I get used to their style. I used to play Taki all the time, now I don't even play Natsu. I just prefer not to use a character who I have little interest in. Style comes second, to be perfectly honest. I have played only a few rounds with Alpha Pat, but that's about it. He is an awful character, and I can't play him for that. If Setsuka was in his place, I'd main her and her style.

They ditched a few of my favorites, so I got bored with the game really fast. I haven't played in months. It sucks, really...

God damnit!

If they EVER for some miraculous reason decide to make another SC, please, fucking please, give PS a longer development time, you fucking namco assholes!

THIS is the reason why were all pissed about the roster.

To be fair though, the core game play is good, and if it wasn't, this game would have NEVER seen the light of day.

Let's get one thing clear folks, the horrible roster is NOT PS's fault, but fucking namco's. That's corporatism for you. Big business is gonna fuck you in the ass with a giant rubber dick while uncle Sam takes your arm and leg.

Okay I'm done being pissed now :)

Considering I have never played Soul Calibur 1 or Soul Edge/Blade, and I had to skip out on Soul Calibur 3 D:, I don't really feel towards Rock or Bangoo or Li Long(I don't even know who that is! He just had pre-maxi's style is all I know), I am insanely hurt towards the lack of Talim and Yun-Seong. My two mains, gone for no real reason. Talim would be just as old as Hilde (I forgot she was even that old. Hilde's in her mid-30's and even better in looks than her IV version I'd say.) Talim, Yun-Seong, and Zas (Even if I didn't have 3 and never got into him in 4) have no reason to not be in. Seong Mina should also be in, she's not that old. If you really want, give them children. Except Talim's child wouldn't have wind powers, as Talim was the last priestess. Cassandra will most likely be in the next, still young and whatnot. Taki... I'd like to see her. But I'd like Natsu to stay also. They won't just be able to get rid of Natsu with no reason, it'd ruin the story we can decipher out of the artbook and astral home and stuff. What I'd like is Natsu's demon to make her moveset totally different and new, and Taki comes back with what is now Natsu's moveset (minus possession, another stance instead I guess). Necrid I don't even miss. Talim, Yun Seong, Zas, and SeongMina are the ones I want for ScVI (And talim, Yunseong, and Zas's style for DLC. Just replace "Devil Jin's" slot with an extra window for extra souls to choose.) Since it's been leaked we have Seong Mina's and Talim's clothes coming as DLC, I can just hope we'll get their souls also.

The better question is, who are the two characters behind the shield on the select screen?

Lol at the missing argument. They are missing because there was no reason to expect them to simply get rid of unique styles. Rock missing is ok, cause he's alot like astaroth. Zas, talim, and yun at least should be there. Even with the age argument, those three not being there is just weird. At least bring someone who uses those weapon styles.

Why are there 3 mimics and two Pyrrahs? No one wants to play kilik unless he has his staff, and no one wants to use sophitia with Tira's ring.

Okay time to give my 2 cents

Out with old in with the new. That sounds harsh but it's reality. But, I do miss the Vets. (some of them anyways.)

Talim- I don't really understand why they decided to let this character go...I really thought she would make it into SC5 but then again maybe that could be due to time constraints or they're saving her for SC6 (assuming they make SC6) I do think they will put Talim back in Sc6 considering how popular she was but then again if popularity was the rule then we'd be flooding with fan favorites (ex: Li-Long,Hwang,Setsuka,Mina etc). She still has alot of potential for growth and gameplay wise I would love it if they geared it back to her SC2 way. Only time will tell with this one.~:sc2tal1: "Wind...Guide me"

Yun-Seong- I can't really say much about him he never really appealed to me besides aesthetically. I'm going to be blunt but to me he seemed a easily forgettable character. He never seemed to have much impact on the fans...not like Hwang anyways. If they bring him back well goody for those who like him~:sc2yun2:"Let's go!"

Seong-Mina: Okay, this girl is really charming. It's just her whole personality and her way of being~It would be nice to have her back but why would she be back? You cant just bring back a character and say "oh we brought them back just because", she would need a purpose to be back. In the previous games her purpose in the game seemed to be to follow Yun-Seong or whatever. Same thing with the other missing characters.~:sc4min1:"I won't be beaten so easily,you know"

Cassandra- She'll probably come back in SC6 as the 2nd S & S user, assuming aPat is Pat's "real" form and if they decide to follow the tradition of two S&S users. Besides they'll have that whole "she was in Astral Chaos" excuse to bring her back young and kickin'~:sc4cas1:"You can't beat me!"

Sophitia- She's dead..and we have Pyrrha so...~:sc4sop1: "As long as Pyrrha is safe, that is all that matters."; u ;

Taki- Wouldn't mind seeing again,after all we don't really know what happened to her and I'm really interested where she went off to and why she did.~:sc1tak1: "You're too easy to beat"

Rock- Do we really want him back? ._.; ~:sc4roc1: "Come, I will take you on."

That's all I wanna say about that~ :( sorry if I insulted anyone >.< it wasn't intentional

^this!

There is no excuse for not having Zas. After all, he's immortal, right? Can't age?

Besides, everyone liked him, including me.
