Slayers Try was sooooo bad.

I'm only mid way through Revolution, but it's so much better than try it allows me to keep going. Plus the animation is really good, better than any other Slayers outside of the movies. Which are also pretty good, if you like Naga. The biggest problem Revolution has so far are the new animal character, who is lame, and the constant flat jokes, which are meh. Other than that, the episodes are more self-contained, and the overall story has taken a back seat. No 2-3 episode DBZ fights, which is good; the action in the original Slayers series was awful, boring, and not fun to watch. Now the action is alright and animated well enough that it doesn't become annoying.

Also, they got almost all of the old English cast back, so that's nice.

I haven't seen any of the movies but I'll check them out sometime. I wouldn't have watched Slayers Try all the way through except that I bought it in a triple pack with the first 3 series (at the time I bought it I'd only seen the original series). In retrospect I'm kinda amazed I suffered through it cause I couldn't believe some of the shit they pulled. There were multiple instances of them using still frames for over a minute with dialogue and stuff going on. That's even worse than the re-used animations. Plus, Slayers Try is not funny, and has that Fox bandit character Jillias (sp?) who is a serious contender for my least favorite anime character ever.

microgamer: yea that's why I haven't been watching "the world god only knows" or "highschool of the dead" animes.

The biggest problem in the first 3 Slayers series is that each one tries to pack in more actual story, and they always do it at the expense of the jokes. Even the first Slayers starts off with self-contained joke episodes, but by the end it's 3 solid episodes of boring, poorly animated fights. When you get to Slayers Try almost every episode is either a show-down or a plot-dump full of boring exposition.

The strength of the OVAs and movies is that they spend the absolute bare minimum of time setting up the plots, and the fights are well animated. It's the same for the 2 new series; they're only half a dozen episodes long, and barely any of that is spent with exposition or pointless DBZ fights -- and they're better animated anyway. Of course, the humour is different as well, with more flat-chested jokes, and a few really dumb characters. If you've managed to get through all of Try you owe it to yourself to watch the OVAs and movies at least.

I actually thought Slayers Try was better than Revolution and Evolution-R (but my least favorite of the first 3 series). Watching the new ones made me think "I've seen all this already", plus it was not funny at all.

At least Revolution has jokes. Haven't seen Evolution-R yet, but it's probably the same. Try didn't even try to be funny. Entire 2 or 3 episode arcs would go by without ANY jokes. Revolution mostly puts the plot in the back seat and uses most of its running time attempting to be funny, or flashy. Even if it doesn't work all the time, it's still trying to be a comedy first, and a lame shonen not at all.

Yay! xD
What kinds do you like? Do you like lots of comedy, or would you rather it be more serious?

I don't have a particular favorite. As I mentioned I watched all of Toradora since it was a bit predictable but decent nonetheless. When it comes to romance, I can watch almost anything as long as it captures my attention. I dislike super cliche anime that doesn't improve and becomes a spineless guy with a harem. I get the guy is good, but can he just be more straight forward and manly? As for the chicks in anime? The variety is what I want. Tsunderes for instance are fine and dandy, but they start to get redundant if they're those types. The story and purpose has to have a solid point and not some convenient excuse for more eye-candy filler episodes. Eye-candy is nice, but keep it to a certain extent or else I'll stop the anime and go fap or something lol. In any case, when I know I'm watching stuff like bad romance anime, I either "troll watch it" knowing how obvious it unwraps, or stop watching it altogether.

I haven't seen a romantic anime yet that wasn't predictable, but then I'm relatively new to anime.
If you've watched a lot of them you may have already seen a few of these but if not I can kinda describe them!
Kaichou wa Maid Sama,
Lovely Complex
Special A
Bokura ga ita
I was going to say Zero no Tsukaima, but Louise is pretty much Taiga (from Toradora, same voice actor even!) but she never really turns nice like Taiga did.
Hm, seems like I've watched more than this, but then most anime has at least an element of romance so other stuff I watched probably made me think that.

Yeah Kugimiya Rie is a popular voice actor that's everywhere. I like her, but I do get tired of the same characters she voices: short, petite, moe, tsundere types similar to Shana(Shakugan no Shana). Every once in a while, I do wanna see her good voice used differently or at least used for a different character type. In any case, those anime you mentioned seem decent. They have a cliche yet promising plot. I'll probably watch them once I'm done with "cross game". For now, enjoy another like out of gratitude.

-Pocky Yoshi

@NamuSkull/Pocky Yoshi?
Another like??? you're so generous! 8)
I like her, but I've only seen or rather heard, her in the two I mentioned. (And later I found out she was in a few small roles in others) but I think it would be a bit much to see her in same role over and over!
In Maid Sama Usui is a little like the "straight forward and manly" type your looking for, but Misaki is a bit of a tsundere (nowhere near as much as Taiga! xD)
With Lovely Complex, Both the guy and the girl are kinda tsundere... O.o'
Special A is mostly comedy and the girl is reeaalllly dense.
And Bokura ga ita is a little over dramatic if you ask me, but not bad. =)

@senzait
I don't have Netflix, but a friend told me once that they have Clannad which imho is like the best thing ever! xD
And I'm not sure what kinds you like, but I'm sure they have the really popular ones like Death Note, Bleach, etc.

Netflix only has dubs if you're asking about instant watch. Take that as you will. The Clannad dub completely changed the characters for me, and absolutely nobody can replace Mamiko Noto as Kotomi.

@iKotomi
Really? that's kind of a shame... I rarely like dubs, and even when I think they're alright I still prefer subs. =P
True. I can't imagine anyone else voicing her, same goes for Fuko! ;D

Dubs work when the voice actors don't try to imitate the Japanese. The Read or Die OVA is an example of this, and I think the dub was better even than the original.

@Page, they only have Slayers Evolution-R on instant watch, but it is the dub.

As for romance anime, off the top of my head for some reason the only one that isn't Toradora I can think of is REC. Pure romance is pretty rare I guess, and mostly pretty bad. If you want drama with romance elements, you have stuff like Air, Clannad, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien, Angel Beats. And if you're interested in visual novels, Tsukihime (don't watch the anime) Fate/Stay Night (also don't like the anime) and G-Senjou no Maou.
