OnLive: Games on Demand

http://www.onlive.com/index.html

Browsing around one of the many L4D fansites I visit, I came across this and thought I'd post it up. Apperantly, they are having a beta test of this in the summer. Needless to say, I figured I'd give it a shot so I signed up.

Right now, nothing revealed about the pricing but Im pretty sure, like everything in this day and age. There will most likely be a monthly fee of some kind, but Im willing to give this a shot.

Maybe this shit won't Red Ring.

Sounds like... I dunno...

GameTap...
The Phantom...
XBL...
PSN...
WiiWare...

With companies like Comcast limiting bandwidth, this thing will be dead out of the gates.

RIP Playstation Nintendo etc

Yo, Jaxel! Let some people have their own opinions, mang! This is a harmless topic. Damn pedophile...

I think the OnLive service will be awesome.

http://videogames.yahoo.com/feature/new-tech-could-make-consoles-obsolete/1299562

There may be a few flaws like concerns on bandwidth limits and the such; but this is nothing like Gametap. It's much better, and supporting services (like ISPs) will adapt, one way or another. If the price is right, and the performance is 3/4th of what it brags, it will definately put consoles in one hell of poor position.

I personally think it would be outrageously awesome to have a 5hr+ battery travel laptop w/ a 3.5G+ connection with this service; esp if it has HDMI out like my current notebook. Talkin' about some awesome business trips! Finally no more bored-in-the-hotel-room looking-for-easy-women - well, at least not as much!

I'm definately going to nag them to beta test.

I'd like to talk about this upcoming service with others interested... so plz don't lock :D

RIP Playstation Nintendo etc

It looks kind of odd, but if it is what they promise, i doubt Sony and Microsoft will let it 1 up them.

This device needs to come out 5-10 years from now. Right now it's going to fail for numerous reasons.

I did sign up as a beta tester. Hopefully I will get accepted in Summer '09.

ya i just saw this thing on yahoo news and its pretty amazing that they can play games in HD like crysis by streaming n shit. they said it'll be realease this winter... but who knows how the consumer may feel about it.

Up to and until the moment I try this myself I'm calling bullshit on just about everything they're advertising. Really, 80ms+ under ideal conditions to play a singleplayer game? No thanks. Just imagining how retarded it would be playing an online game through this service is giving me a headache.

But I'm consistently surprised by the shit console gamers put up with. If they can keep it under 100ms for most people playing singleplayer games then I'd be surprised if the majority gave a shit. On the other hand, anything over 150ms and they're not going to last 3 weeks.

RIP Playstation Nintendo etc

Naw this is another gimmick piece of crap. Its prolly from the same guy who was gunna realease the system that never came out before this generation of console came out. Consoles provide more then games these days plus having a "streaming game" sounds like a horrible Idea. Loading, Loading, Loading, Loading........ Comon, this isnt gunna work, at least for now.

Would it be? I'm under the impression all the processing is done on their end, and you're just fed the video like Cable TV.

There should be zero loading loading loading.

The only downside is if you have a bad ping or high packet loss even 'playing offline' (so to speak) will feel like a laggy online game cuz input delay.

Oh yes... also, dont forget about Level 5's ROID service that is pretty much the same thing as GameTap or Steam.

So you got...

GameTap
Steam
ROID
XBL
PSN
WiiWare
The Phantom...

Does ANYONE think this shit OnLive is a good idea?! I betcha its made by the same ripoff artists as the Phantom.

The input lag on this would be horrible, even worse than your typical online game as you can't do any client-side prediction as its all server-side. So, if you had a 80ms latency to their server, it would take 80ms from when you pushed a key/moved the mouse before the server processes it and 80ms + rendering time (at 60fps, add on another 16.7ms) back again before you can visually see the results of your action. At least, in your typical fps game, you can start rendering the result of your action immediately and predict the movements of the other players and you will be right most of the time.

To get latencies anywhere near as fast as 80ms, they would need to have server farms all over the place. And these wouldn't be small server farms either, since, one person playing an intensive game would require a modern computer of their own.

Then factor in the bandwidth involved, and its prohibitive for anyone with bandwidth caps or who pays for the amount of bandwidth used. You also certainly wouldn't be able to have multiple people playing a game in your house either, as even if your internet connection could support 1 connection, would it be able to handle 2? 3? LAN parties would be impossible with this tech.

Then from the hands-on previews that I've read (for example: http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=1090 or http://i.gizmodo.com/5184502/onlive-streaming-games-hands+on-impressions), there are noticeable compression artifacts, and even some complaints about input lag (the server was only 50 miles away).

But then again, I don't think we are the target market.

The Phantom...

Does ANYONE think this shit OnLive is a good idea?! I betcha its made by the same ripoff artists as the Phantom.

I was gunna say the same thing But I couldnt remember if it was the phantom. Its gotta be the same guy, hes a complete idiot who thinks he can scam the Gamer Market, and If you remember correctly they tried tracking this guy down and the best they could do was find a non-existant company and a PO box #....

To be honest, the idea is solid. But physical media(discs, lans, etc) still are better. Not everyone has access to High speed still, and some ISPs are dicks about online gaming. Plus LANing is still popular...well here in KY basements with WaW and H3 anyway.

L4D on System Link is pretty fuckin boss.
