Quick Steps (How to Learn Calibur)

Equal Sign Slash
As some of you already know I've been planning on doing this for about a month or two now and have received nothing but green lights from everyone that I've brought it up to. With a brand new game coming out I think it'll be really important for newer players coming in to have something like this if they're interested in picking up the game.

The goal?

At first, it was mainly character tutorials. Although this is going to be really difficult to do alone, with the help of frequent guests, this shouldnt be too hard. Characters like Maxi and Taki are too much for newer players to handle the moment they jump into the game. Hell, even veteran players such as myself still don't know what Maxi has been doing all these years. One of the episodes of the show will focus on not only learning Maxi, but what he's capable of, and escaping any "traps" he might be putting u in.

Hopefully the show can be much more than that. And any community feedback and ideas are more than welcome. Maybe we can go further and dissect tournament matches, have grudge matches, or just interviews.

What are we avoiding?

The more I think about the tutorials the more I think I'm bringing the lab to the people. There are VERY few people I know that actually do this. SU and TP are actually the only people that come to mind tbh. They constantly come back stronger because they pinpoint exactly where they have gone wrong, breakdown a character completely, and come back to destroy it. Maybe an episode can be used to show people how to use Training Mode? I don't know. But hopefully this will be more encouraging to people to use the game and brainstorm set-ups and escape options rather than waiting for the "Anti-Ivy" episode.

The Breakdown.

-The show still needs a name. This is something I would like to have by the end of the month. The only thing I can really think of was "School of Calibur" but even that sounds a little -_- Anything catchy or cute, feel free to PM me or FB me.
-The hosts are going to be Me and Chuck The Landslide. I'm thinking it'll be more fun if we do it "Assist Me" style, with the whole joking around bit but not planning out skits. I don't think we'll have time or the people for that (as fun as that would be haha.)
-Speaking of time, this is another concern. I think the episodes should be short enough for people to want to tune in, and not long enough for people to just sit there and be bored of it. I don't know if maybe everything can be covered in 10-15 minutes, but maybe this is a good time frame. We'll see.
-Hopefully a new episode can be done every week (Sunday seems to be the best day for this.) And we can start coming out with episodes by January, possibly 2-3 weeks before release to get people started with the game systems and catch them up on all the info that has been posted on 8WR.

Feel free to post up your 2 cents.
Thanks in advance.

Snip.
Thanks in advance.

I say go for it. The outline looks great and would benefit anyone who wants to learn a character. This would also promote the game itself.

Here:

- No longer than 20 minutes.

- School of Calibur
School Calibur

Thumbs up.

I wanna help. Dunno how I could but if something comes up that I possibly could help with....hopefully thinks of me.

HRD

Definitely. I think once the character specific stuff comes along and the schedule for the episodes are set I will be contacting players and members individually. I appreciate the support. Thank you.

Whatever you want or need that I can help with, say the word.

I know Partisan is good with graphics, as is Krit. They would be some of the first people I would ask.
Hates is good at filtering content (i.e. helping with breaking down complex ideas into simple digestable stuff).

This is a great idea DK. There are many who could benefit from this. I remember how confusing things were when I first got on the old sc forums.

I think 10 minutes is perfect. I wouldn't push too much further than that because people have very limited attention spans.

You can go over basics like how to punish off block, step, ect. Basic combo theory, how to break throws effectively.

I like the idea of demonstrating the proper use of training mode. Perhaps you can do a general one and then more specific ones every now and then. Like suppose there are notorious difficult mix ups that people have trouble dealing with, you can do an episode where you use command play back to train against it. Take time and explain that they should see if there are any answers that kill the mix up. Explain the thought process that goes into that sort of thing. And ofcourse if there is no answer Explain and demonstrate learning to react to it.

Cover system mechanics of course like just guard, guard impact, Just frames, teching/just teching, step/quick step.

You can explore difficult match ups and explain how the disadvantaged character still has a chance. Tutorial for fighting as a character and fighting against the character. Essential characters first, like if there is a character that gets away with a ton of shenanigans, cover that character early on so there isn't too much whining. Having a demonstration and doing some match analysis is a good idea to.

Either way make it light, funny, entertaining. This sort of mainstream stuff is great for the game's popularity. No ideas for names yet but I'll let you know if I think of any.

Yeah, partisan and krit I definitely already spoke to. I will b in talks with them should I need anything since they're already given me their ok to help.

DMan - Yeah, I was definitely thinking along the lines of that. I jus hope 10 minutes is enough. Lol.

Definitely sounds good, I reckon 8wr is going to get really heavy traffic once the game drops, so it'll good for newer players to have both forums and visual aids to refer to, as well as an actual voice breaking things down to them. Also, Ceirnian's 'Quick Step' sounds so good lol

Quick Steps sounds great. I was initially thinking of something with CE, punning on the word edge, like gaining the critical edge(gaining the edge), but I couldn't come up with something quirky. Maybe as an episode title if you come up with something.

Quick steps I think might be the best name.

That sounds like a fantastic idea, and as a new player I thank you for working on something like this :)

Although I didn't actually spend much time playing Tekken, I found the "Level up your game" series of vids pretty awesome, and one in particular where they brought in an Asuka specialist to give you all the details on that character. When I read your idea for the show, that series was the first thing I thought of.

I don't think it's necessary that the show be short, unless you don't have a lot of stuff to talk about. If people don't want to watch or listen to the whole thing, they can skip through parts, but speaking for myself, I'd prefer something more in-depth. Especially when it comes to character breakdowns, I'm not sure that could be done in 15 mins.

As I spend a lot of time in practice mode trying to learn the basics of fighters, having the first show be a tutorial/practice guide would be an excellent start. Or if you're going to be doing shows prior to launch, then maybe the first post-launch show should be about this.

Dman - Its like we're one brain lol. I was thinking Critical Edge as well, but seeing how popular Quick Steps is, I just got another idea. Maybe we could branch off and have Critical Edge be sort of a sub-show that will serve as a visual match-up chart. For example, the Pyhrra playlist in the Critical Edge channel will show her match-ups against the other 30 characters and help Pyhrra players gain the "Critical Edge" in those match-ups.

J1yeon - Level up your game was what initially came to mind as well, but i remember seeing those hour + long episodes on characters, and i was immediately turned off tbh. I think we can condense all the integral info in a short amount of time. Especially for people on the go. I dont think that short time could be 10 minutes though. Especially if we plan on making it entertaining. Im shooting for 15 minutes. Everyone loves "Assist Me" and that runs for more than 15 minutes so hopefully we can aim for that. I think as long as we capture the audience and have them entertained they'll stick around to watch the whole thing.

The first two episodes I'm planning will most likely be on Game Mechanics/Intro to SCV and How to Use Training Mode.
After that we'll be diving into character breakdowns. To make it easier on ourselves the first 2 or 3 characters will most likely be returning Movesets and then we can take a shot at newer characters or vastly different movelists.

The Critical Edge idea probably won't take off until some time in the future tho, when we're all familiar with the game and have played enough.

Great idea, make it happen!!!

I like 15-20 minutes span.
Not too short and not too long.

I like Quick Steps as well, maybe you guys can make the Quick Step logo to look like and feel like a "Soul Calibur" logo, then we're set!
