Raphael General Discussion

New to 8wayrun, would like some Raphael help

I'm "Ruiner" in all the Ruiner vs Riceholic matches, and would like some honest input into things I'm doing right, wrong, whatever.

Be dead honest too, if I suck, call me out on it and explain how to get better. I'm still kinda new to SC4 so I think I'm progressing decently. I want to be a great Raphael player however, so I need more input.

P.S) I'm aware I missed combo opportunities offa some Prep A's, I mess up the Prep BBB:B sometimes.

Use for 6A, 1BB (or 1B), 3A, and 11_77 B

8A+B = worthless? I Know I'm nowhere near PenDragonsfall's Raphael lvl...but this move hits well upclose, it's a terrible mid/long range move to pull out, but when you're dealing with pitbulls like Taki/Talim's, I'm constantly throwing this around.

6B is i13

i dont know what 6K is but its fast

and 4K is fast

or just throw K out people forget that K is a great anti pit bull weapon

i think after 2K hits WS A will beat opp 2A most of the time (except near wall/edge i gues). nothing special but interesting anyway.

You're playing a poking game which is always good, just make sure you keep it more intelligent. Use more than 4B as your prep entrance and less funny stuff like A+B randomly. We're all trying to make our individual Raph game stronger. Even with a decent amount of tournament play I'm still no where near finding how to play him effectively, imho.

I don't like 8A+B that shit is way too inconsistent as a move. It's fine if you use it, but relative to the rest of the game it's trash. 11B is very good for many things.

If 8A+B covered Raph's left, it wouldn't be shit. That isn't the case, though, so it's only half decemt against fucking pitbulls, as Beloved Child said.

I'd say expand on your prep game a bit more. You seem to be going into prep A quickly, when you could be putting more pressure on your oppnt; prep shenanigans are lots more fun that grabs, at least I think so o.O

hudathan i think you have to keep your opponent back stepping

i mean thats what a rapiers for

also alot of pressure i think thats the most effective way to play him

so play defensively one second then a sporadic burst of offense

What's wrong with the Joker/Military chick Belial? o_O? Better then all the Ronald Mcdonalds/Kitten suit garbage I see everywhere....

Hudathan.....talk to me man, what's the deal? Are you saying Raphael is simply not a viable choice for a tournament environment? I mean, are there any great Raphael players that can beat Amy/Cassandra's/Kilik's consitantly? I'm thinking those would be the main tourney threats.....

I use 3b and 4ab for prep as well....I DON'T LIKE 6BB because of it being 2 highs however, I constantly get scared of getting ducked and punished, and Yun Sung has a very nasty TC jump combo.

BelovedChild, I've personally played raph in a few majors that took place since the game's release and am probably the most active SCIV raph player at the moment. I can tell you that he's at a disadvantage against majority of the solid characters at high level play. He has fundamental weaknesses that takes quite a bit to overcome, something I'm still working on myself. He can beat any character of course, but not consistently enough and certainly not at high level tournament play. You have to play an excellent round just about every time.

3B and 44AB are excellent prep options, but prep itself is a limited tool so there's a lot to consider.

This really isn't encouraging...especially since I'm a relatively new SC4/Raphael player, Pendragonfall mutilated me in a Raph vs Raph match, and supposedly, you're better then even he is o_o.......

Sigh......I'm not jumping ship to the Amy boat man.....Amy doesn't get any respect....

As I said before each round must be played perfectly. Of course that means many things and it's all match up specific. I don't mind playing around the other character, that's normal in fighting games. The discrepancy comes when it's your turn to do something and you realize raph doesn't have the tools. He's good at a few things but they don't mesh together very well. Be thankful that soul gauge is in the game since that's one of the few things he can rely on.

Don't let anything any of us say discourage you from playing the character. He's not a good character and we have to be honest about that but if you have a good understanding of the game you can make it work. None of us are raph experts and we're all trying to play him better.

his SG can cut peoples abillity to block everything off

plus hes good at keeping pressure with out prep

but yeah hudathans right he doesn't mesh well

he would be easly high mid teir if he had horizontals

Well, I managed to throw in some cautious 6As and 3As into my gameplay.. seems to help it somewhat I guess. Just more seemingly random Raph pokes :/

Always hilarious to get a 6A CH off.

beloved - raphs not strong in the game but the game is pretty well balanced right now, so even with raph you can do well in a tournament.
