Raphael General Discussion

I realize...but I seem to remember that even back in SCII (Prep A) auto-GI being re-GIable / 2G able...

doesn't really matter anymore...just don't use 4A+B anymore

I'm in love with CH A+B,A. I need to stop using it AS MUCH, but it's still a solid move when used cautiously. I'm trying to find a way to sidestep and do it fast, rather then getting an 8wayrun move off.

Hudathan, you have juggle combo with Raphael that LOOKS(or tell me what it is) like 66A+B, K/4K?, 66A. It's stylish and I want to know the input/timing if you don't mind.

I wish I was near my PS3 but I'm going to try the 66A+B 6B 8A+B later too, just for the razzle dazzle, because that's the main thing Raphael players can pride themselves on.

If you input 66A+B, BT K delay (press when the opponent's height is around Raph's head), 66A it will catch all air control except for back-left and back-right. If you don't delay the BT K you can catch BL and BR but I think it doesn't catch left and right. Pretty good combo, it does 65 damage. If only there was something that can catch all directions...

4A+B would be nice to use, the aGI window starts quite early so it's probably best used on a small disadvantage. But if I get an attack blocked and know a fast AA/high poke is coming, 4B's my move for that. 8A+B's aGI window starts around the time when 4A+B ends, so I'd just throw it out at neutral or minor adv.

Heh, I think flashiness is one of the major key points for Raph. I think Hudathan said it best that Raph has "substituted fundamentals for razzle dazzle."

Use for 6A, 1BB (or 1B), 3A, and 11_77 B

anyone esle use 6B+K i started using it recently

its safe, takes 13 to soul crush, mildly fast at i19,decent damage, but linear, and low range a good get off me move because on block its spaces well and on CH its a knock down.

6B+K is a good move if used at the right time. If it had the reach it used to it would be unbeleivbly good.

Ruiner, you can use either BT K or B after 66A+B hit. I use 66A since it's hard to AC and even if I miss I recover fast enough to do something else.

I enjoy playing in a flashy way, but I wish it was his moves that looked flashy and not the fact that he's a gimmicky character.

lol he really is all gimmicks

i dont think hes bad

but a victim of over balancing

i mean if raph could RO he would be cheap seeing as prep BBB:B can go half way across the arena

More 3B. More 22. Poke more with single moves. Try using no 1BB, just 1B for example.

I feel your raph was to aggresive to be succesful. Your putting your self at disadvantadge and then attacking right into a Counter Hit.

To many throws, although you have great side step throw game, Id recomend mixing it up with 22/88 to keep em guessing.

kyper/egg/Hudathan/Angelic/everyone I missed thanks alot for all this information.

Already the other night I played another very good Yun Sung player and I'm surprised looking back at my vids I didn't have many 22_B VE B:B's out there, which I'm getting the JF much more now. My 11B use has improved.

Egg, I already read your mind but appreciate the details. The 2nd B of 1BB has push back that can set up a safe 44B if they try to attack, but I've been sidestepped with it too much and I'm using it every 4th or so 1B I do now. Key advice there....

I throw too much, I know. It works vs average/lesser players TOO WELL, and get's OWNED to well by higher competition. It's a bad habit I'm trying to break. Thanks for noticing.

....What do you guys think of 33_99B? It's a mid-range only low poke that I THOUGHT I could mix up with 33_99KB, but it whiffs close range and it seems to telegraph too much. Have you guys experimented with this move at all?

I use 6B+K as a spacing tool now too. Not too often though because like Angelic said, it's got weird targeting issues.

As said above, when stepping stuff just go for the guaranteed hits (22B combo, 33KB). Don't worry about throwing too much, Raph's throws are good but just be a little more picky on when/how you use them. Try throwing on wakeup after rolling out of the way of a grounded attack, after blocking an attack at his max throw range, and so on.

I use 33_99B quite a bit. It's best used at the longest range possible. I rarely ever see it blocked or even jumped, it just whiffs like crazy so I don't think anyone bothers heh. It's a decent round opener and usually one of my options when my opponent and I are 8WRing around each other at a distance.

Ruiner - I don't use 33_99B in my game. I think 2K and 1A are all the lows I ever use and even then I use them sparingly since neither TC's well or give rewards. Playing raph for me is like weaving through traffic carefully until an opportunity presents itself to run one of his gimmicks, he just doesn't have the solid basics needed to go toe to toe in many situations.

I think Raph could do well against other similarly tiered characters, but could be helpful to use something else to combat the higher tiered characters.

Raphael's kicks?

If I could have ONE Soul Calibur wish for the next patch (if there is one), it would be to make Raph's 66K a mid-hitting attack. That way, he can put the fear of god in anyone close to the edge by mixing it up between his forward ring out throw and his 66K, if they decide to try and duck a throw. I mean they already nerfed him enough from SC3 to SC4, and then they nerfed him again by taking away BB tracking. Just give us Raph fans something to rejoice over, Namco!!

Raphael's kicks?

Having tracking or combos or ring outs or mix ups would confuse me as a raph player since I'm not used to any of those things, I would just play like trash.

Lol yeah I guess we're all a little used to having to work harder for our wins with Raph. This one little, tiny change would make him magnitudes better with ring out potetial imo.

I forgot to say this as well; mix in some 6A+B that move is too good.

Raphael's kicks?

if I could ask for 1 thing to improve Raph...this would not be it :-p

His kicks are pretty terrible with the exception of 6K. 3K, 22K, and jumping K (in all its various forms) are the only exemptions to the "terrible" rule, though they are certainly not "Good".
