Soul Calibur V Raphael - Nerfs? Buffs? Change Of Style?

Hit Confirmability Please!!

Lets see.. we got 6BBB, 66B and 66A+B, and maybe 6A,44K if you count those as "pokes" that we can tack on extra damage after visually confirming they are NH/CH. Can't do that with 22B/22(B) or 3B/3(B) which happen to be his core moves or even 4B/4(B) or SEA B /SEA (B). At best you have to take an educated guess whether to commit to stance and go for damage or stance interrupt or play it safe and go for the pushback. This type of "guessing" leads to unnecessary risk.
 
Mind if I whine a little ?
I practiced modern fencing and studied rapier fencing (which are 2 different things), and I must say I would love to see Raphael learn proper fencing, for a change.
I know it's a game and the goal is not to show proper technique, but to have fun, yet it's quite a pain to see Raph like that.
Fencing is made of fast, short and straightforward moves, except when it comes to feints.
And fencing is NOT dancing.
Whine over...

That being said, he doesn't need too much change to become a good character.
Improve the risk/reward balance
Add a few feints/cancel to offer a richer playstyle.
Correct or remove some moves :
- prep A is a close combat move when Raph is a mid distance character
- make the second hit of VEA hit mid, so it doesn't become useless vs skilled players (who just duck and punish)
- replace present 4A with 4A from SCII (step control), make 4A+B not GI-able.
Maybe improve his overall damage, but i'm not sure.
Nerf other characters :)
 
About raph's visual fighting style in SC5:

You have some "technical fencing", which are probably his bread and butter type moves. I see these as being the low-mid damage, low-mid reward types. (I can see them as his 3B, prepB, 236B)
Then you have the "noble flair", which shows off raph's arrogance and contempt, with highly stylized movements. The damage for these type of moves should be noticeable but they shouldn't be spammable due to various weaknessess.(like his A+BA, 33K:B)
Lastly you have the "supernatural vampire" type moves, which are pretty much gimmicky and can be used to either further humiliate your opponent or goad them into doing something stupid. There should be a minimum of these moves, I dont' raph turning into a younger gunless cerventes (VE grabs, A+K4).

^thissssss prep A doesn't fit into his style at all

VE A isnt useless I love that move =( its just not brain dead and spammable

I think you summed up quite well the spirit of the character. But I fear they will develop even more the vampire aspect. After all, his teleport is almost useless.
Well, if it turns him into a god tier, I won't complain too much.

I've seen a lot of good players duck under VEA and punish it violently. And I think this move is too important for Raph playstyle, if it's broken, Raph is at a big disadvantage.

very few moves have 0 risk involved
I like VE A because of the back throw potential if it hits Its raphs big damage dealer in my opinion since I play really pokey(back throw not VE A)
 
I've been fantasizing about how to improve some of Raphael's moves. I would really appreciate your opinion on this :
6B+K : I find it quite weak as it is, and few people seem to use it. The worst is the +1 advantage on block.
Do you think it would be interesting to make it -7 on block and stun on hit ?

6B : It's fast, but it's high and has weak damage. Why not make it positive on block ?
It would become a move from which Raph could develop his game, a move meant to provoke the opponent mistakes.

6BB / 3B : why not a little safer ?

4B : I don't like the fact that it's a slow 2 time move (first crouches, then strikes).
There's a move in fencing, the Night Botte (fitting for a vampire) which both crouches and strikes at the same time.

Why not ? It's not the move of the century, and it's been done in ohter fighting games (VF) without breaking it.

And what do you think of my suggestions ? Are they that silly ? :)
 
vf and SC4 have vastly different systems

If you put advantage on jabs you end up with characters like lynette in SC where her i11 ABA4 was +3 on block

I definitely like the 6B+K idea though It was much better in SC3
 
1) 6B by itself can be deceptively safe because of the 6BB followup. The problem is that the animation for both raph and his opponent after blocking is it is long enough so you can distinguish 6B and 6BB too easily. If it's going to be +0 on hit, then it should have lowered blockstun to mask raph's intentions.

2)3B is the least of raph's worries imo (being his best move)

3) I believe the 4B animation is stolen from amy's sc3 (AE?) movelist but TCin'g at i3 until impact frame at i21 may actually be a safer option than iwrB (less likely to rise face-first into a high attack and get CH'd).

4) I agree that fencing should have a lot of evasion + attack built into a movement, which is kinda lacking in raph (oddly enough). Hopefully we'll see more of moves that are evasive early, which will help him disrupt an opponent's rythem.
 
I think I got carried away with 6B and 3B :)

I have nothing against the crouching properties of 4B, since that's what a night botte is supposed to be, not a rising move.
 
the dev's felt the same thing when they balanced him for SCBD. Whether this decision came before, after or during they went around buffing everyone else noticeably or improving step is the better question
 
hey man...amy got a slight nerf....3BA is -14 and her ringout game took a hit with no 236K:A ringouts anymore
 
I just say they should revert Rapheal to SC2 status. He was a really fun character to play with and seemed more true to the rapier/fencing style. Now, to me, it just seems more like he's dancing and doing random dodge moves that just happen to evade a lot of moves. (ex. most mid to high horizontals).
 
actually he doesn't dodge almost anything... ._.
his VE is almost a Joke, his auto SE starts only if u empty prep...that is a meaningless suicide 99% of times

His only real evasive moves are 6K and 4B

I don't know... I get pretty annoyed with that 4B from me swinging over his head. Then I'm stunned for a good 2 to 3 seconds. I feel that raphael is a good beginner character now when that used to not be the case. If I see him dodge a move its...meh. but if I see amy dodge a move by either doing that a+k hop or 88/22G I'm like "that's smooth!"

Dangit. I still can't understand all this fancy lingo and internet talk. even some of the soul calibur terms like iWS confuse me.

P.S. no I'm not an old man. I'm 20 and I'm into the new stuff. (Technology-wise) (Games too) (maybe movies and music too.) muttermuttermutter...
