I think we're getting a little to hung up on SC3AE here and making the situation out into something that doesnt apply today. Hwang and LiLong being in that game was acceptable because there wasnt anyone else to throw in. Now there is and no, the order of events or narrative wont justify that.
What significant things is LiLong even going to do if he does come back with a story? In his case the whole point is two nunchucks instead of one, or just for people who dont like Maxi. There is basically no other reason to have him.... and this is coming from someone who hates Maxi.
The fact that the cast will so closely resemble SCIII: AE's is not really evidence in itself; it's a consequence of the dev team's design priorities, not the -cause- of those priorities in itself. From the beginning, the devs cast a net that fell over the first four games (SE through SCIII) and characters originating in those games. Base game and DLC alike, everyone in SCVI comes from one of those games, and the plot devices retconned for the present game begin at the tail end of the events in Soul Edge and trail into the beginning of the events of Soul Calibur III. While there's nothing in the devs' way in broadening the scope of their story, aside from their own commitment to their previous decisions, they have given absolutely zero indication in-game or in interviews that they intend to do that. Every DLC reveal (and every character hinted at in the present "leak") suggest they are just trying to fill in the missing pieces. As for their place in the story, I'm quite confident that Project Soul can distill more than enough from their lore to carry a little narrative, even if they do get soul Chronicle stories, which is, from all indication, unlikely anyway.
Now I do hope that once they accomplish that with season two, they consider bringing in at least the SCIV/BD trio and an additional guest, but I'm pretty sure none of them are planned until after that, because all of the codenames fit the last six characters characters from that original span of games, and they increased the size of the second season pass to accommodate exactly the number of characters that would be needed to accomplish that task. It's just too much evidence converging on a common conclusion and with everything the devs have indicated to us, directly and indirectly, about their plans. The only thing arguing for Hilde and Algol and [never, never gonna happen] Viola is that some fans want them in. But I don't think that's enough and I think people are reaching towards their confirmation bias to come up with convoluted explanations for how they could be one of the Final Six, even if the evidence doesn't really hold up. Which is fine! No harm in people enjoying that hope. That kind of daydreaming is what sustains the lottery industry. "Yeah, of course it's not gonna happen....but what if it did!?" I just hope people aren't getting their hopes up so much that when inevitable disappointment hits, they won't buy the actual DLC characters they should have been expecting.
I don't think STAR is Viola, simply because the code-names appear to be based on the literal meanings of previous characters' names rather than their powers or symbolism. They could always bring Viola's fighting style back with a different character, but I can't see that happening either. (Side note, I think it would be cool if they gave Viola's style to an actual Romani character, but on the other hand, I would never trust Namco to not portray such a character in really bad ways.)
We better not get any console-exclusive characters. It's a horrible idea for many, many reasons.
Yup, I noticed that as well. Again, attempts to wedge Viola in here are just a consequence of people grasping at straws. What amuses me about this one (aside from the fact that Viola's apperance is 16-17 years early, in the game where they have been most concerned with establishing a firm chronology of events) is that the reference wouldn't even make sense for her. As you say, it's not related to her name, but even beyond that, her connection is to star
s, not her role as
a star. Her connection is to zodiac signs, and the constellations from which those signs are derived are made up, like all constellations, of numerous stars, not a single star. As for the tricloured stars, that is clearly a reference to the the
Viola tricolour (also known as "heartease" and "three faces in a hood", interestingly enough)--for those unfamiliar, a common European wildflower used for traditional folk remedies and perfumes which plays a role in a lot of European folklore (including zome classical mythology tie-ins). The imagery of stars associated with Viola is always in the multiple, and has nothing to do with her name. Whereas Yun-seong's given name literally means "star" (singular), just as all the other names seem to be rather direct references.
Occam's razor, folks.
