SoulCalibur VI Storyline Theory Thread

Heya. First of all, I'd like to welcome everyone back to the stage of history. Let this be a step toward a very bright future.

Now, I dunno how necessary this thread will be (if it dies, it dies I guess), but I figure it'd be fun to chat about.

From what we do know from just the trailers alone, we see Mitsurugi and Sophitia duking it out. Both of em alive and young like SoulCalibur 1.

From what most people can gather, it's likely a soft reset of the series with SoulCalibur being the starting point a la Mortal Kombat 9.

But does that have to make SCV null and void? Does anyone believe Project Soul will use any shred of story elements from SCV? What about 2-4? Will this game just be a setup to fix what they might have broken? Will they implement characters introduced after SC1? How?

Feel free to discuss these and share new points. Are there things from the series you'd like to see return? Or an opportunity you'd like to see them take?

Let's talk.

What I suspect is that the story will be about trying to prevent a bad future in the SCV timeline from occurring, such as the two swords locked into a war that destroys the world, and the story will go up to SCIV (if they make it to SCII, they can do the other two since they're in the same year) and we'll fully see the events that past games only referenced.

The twist is that, like MK9, the story will be altered in some ways as attempts to change the future only make them worse (I suspect Sophitia will be the main character in this, based on the implication in the trailer). Other characters that might know the future include Algol, Edge Master, Zasalamel, Nightmare, and (if in the game) Elysium. All of this will be a factor in the story, for they know of a future that awaits them. The story ends with the heroes defeating both Nightmare and Elysium, and the world being saved from a terrible future.

The twist is that we cut to Algol, who laughs and says "All is going according to plan. Soon both the swords, and the world, will be mine!". Then it continues from SCIV in the next game, as opposed to jumping to SCV. I believe this whole thing is to prevent SCV from happening in the timeline, because we all know how well that worked out.

Since Bamco has claimed there will be an epic story mode (hopefully with most of it left intact unlike V) here are my thoughts from what little we've been shown.

I'm not really sure I can call it a reboot or even a reset, mostly because the team hasn't outright said so and they're being vague about it for some reason. Heck, they haven't even revealed the ages of Mitsurugi and Sophitia (who were 25 and 21 in SCI respectively). The only way you can tell it's during 1 is that Sophitia's children aren't mentioned in her bio because even Pyrrha hasn't been born yet and it doesn't even mention Rothion who she was engaged to in SC1. It doesn't seem like they're just wiping the events of II-V out of existence (mostly because that's lazy).

If I was going to give a theory it'd be this: it's not a reboot, it's a remake of SCI that's being used to iron out some plot holes and inconsistencies that happened with the subsequent entries because, let's face it, there was no planned story in spite of the series' very rich lore. They could weave things that happened or were mentioned in future entries, like maybe having Sophitia's ending with the birth of Pyrrha hint at the poor girl's influence from the Soul Edge or we actually get to have a campaign wherein we see Siegfried's time as Nightmare. Furthermore the official description the devs are concentrating on is "revisit the events of the original Soulcalibur to uncover hidden truths", perhaps meaning they're going back to integrate elements that were canon only after SCII and SCIII came out and perhaps bring some dropped plot points they didn't expand upon previously. Considering the breadth of the cast even with SCI they could do some interesting story modes, like maybe have it be a Blazblue thing where everyone has their own campaign that crosses over with other characters' before hitting a big finale.

I definitely missed a bio, is this on the Bandai-Namco site?

It remains hopeful then that they definitely expand upon the story of SCI, as well as introduce as many successful elements from the sequels.

Maybe they can give us characters earlier than their original debut (wouldn't mind seeing Cassandra/Talim/Yun-Seong this time).

It was in the official announcement:

That's what I have inferred from what little we've been given and I'd be completely fine with revisiting SCI for some plot expansion. Like I said, the actual lore of the series has great potential, maybe have some focus on Siegfried's time traveling with Ivy, Astaroth, and Aeon or with Kilik, Xianghua, and Maxi. Heck, they could even bring in the Schwarzwind and have some focus on characters like Salia. You could do an interesting, worldspanning adventure story with multiple viewpoints

I'm also in the camp that thinks we're getting an MK9 style story. What I'm unsure about is how far the story will go since the events of the first four games take place fairly close to each other. Ending at IV would be neat since that means most pre time skip characters have a chance of coming back.

The timeline is as follows:

SE: 1584
SCI: 1587
SCII-IV: 1591
SCV: 1607

Like is said by Namco, they're focusing on SCI, so don't expect II-IV considering the gap in the timeline.

We don't exactly know what they're planning because it's hinted there's some kind of cosmic retcon like MK9. I also doubt they'll leave Talim out since she literally won the popularity poll. In fact, both Vergeben and Hayate said that she, along with Tira and Zasalamel, are very likely in the game based on what they heard.

They'd age Talim up a bit if she's in this game since sc1 starts 4 years before her original debut. That'd be totally cool tbh. Unless they're tryna introduce an armed 10 year old into the mix (Talim is 14 in SC2 right?)

For one, there's the guy from the end of the teaser trailer who's supposed to be Kilik's rival.
So he won't last long, huh?

I'm not sure what holes SCI had for them to revisit it. However, Pre-SC1 does have some good points in the plot.

So, based on that, I'm guessing Xianglian might be in this game too.

Well, for one, what in the world was the Schwarzwind up to in Siegfried's absence? He wasn't gone for a few days either, he was AWOL for years while they were still around. Heck, you could also use SCVI as a way to bring in some of the background characters like Salia (Siegfried's right hand woman who led Schwarzwind in his absence), Toki (Taki's master who lost his goddamned mind and turned into a demon due to Mekki-maru's influence), and Shugen Kokonoe (Setsuka's master who died from a duel with Mitsurugi), perhaps even making them playable characters. The thing is, it wasn't until SCV we actually got a plot with the series (bungled as it was). Lore happened in the background, removed from the games mostly, creating a SETTING, but not really a plot. This time they can actually write a plot in SCI's setting, actually see events that were previously only alluded to and get some insight into characters.

When you say write a plot, in what manner are you thinking of?

Are you suggesting many fully animated cutscenes? Or story images like SCV? Or simply text boxes telling you the journey like SoulBlade?

If they claim to be 70% done (which lets face it, is a bold faced lie), then this makes me nervous as hell. Project Soul literally claimed to be nearly done the last time and that was their undoing with single player suffering the consequences.

Besides my little rant. I'd like to see the team truly take advantage of the voice actors to help tell the stories of these characters. Give them ALL the dialogue

So far I’m leaning most to the remake/reboot idea with a few characters being retconned to fit the story. The Astral Chaos thing is still in the air, but the less there is from SCV the better..

I can see characters like Setsuka, Zas and Raphael having an easier time returning. But I’m wondering about Hilde. She absolutely HAS to return, but it will be interesting to see how.

What I mean is write an actual plot, an actual story, an actual sequence of events wherein characters interact, make decisions, go through arcs instead of just making a setting and then acting like that's a plot. My bench mark for this in fighting games is the Blazblue series where the plot was told visual novel style wherein every character had a storyline they went through. For SCVI they can go back to SCI's storyline and depict the events on screen instead of just referencing them afterwards. Heck, they already have two ready-made POVs with Siegfried's group consisting of him, Ivy, Astaroth, and Aeon and then Xianghua traveling with Kilik and Maxi as they go westward. They can also expand it a little bit and makes some new storylines. Like I said earlier, it would be interesting to see what Schwarzwind was up to during Siegfried's absence, maybe use it to bring in Salia as a playable character who goes searching for Siegfried or, this would be interesting. bringing in Setsuka's master Shugen so he can be used as a substitute for her in terms of gameplay and have his duel with Mitsurugi happen on screen. Stuff like that. The lore of the series gives them a blueprint, all they need to do is work it into an actual script.

As far as I heard, that duel happened before Soul Calibur. They could just put in Setsuka.

Okay, this is my problem with that idea: it's the exact same thing that led to problems in SCV. V tried to have it both ways by bringing back too many veterans instead of just biting the bullet and starting fresh or aging people accordingly. VI bringing back EVERYONE for the roster in-canon despite the timeframe making no sense creates the same kind of problems. Either save some characters for later (either through SCVII or DLC) or get used to substitutes. Trying to have your cake and eat it never works. Furthermore, it would just lead to the narrative being overstuffed (which is the exact opposite problem of V) considering they've already confirmed they're doing a story mode.

I do like the idea of just having the whole cast in the game but make the storyline separate. Or they should just do a tag tournament like tekken lol
