The Easy Way Out (Character Changing)

So I've been watching my cousin play SCV for the past few hours now. He's been an avid player of IV ever since I introduced it to him, and he's been playing fairly well. When introduced into V, he did what others typically did and immediately was discontented with how some move sets have been changed. Now this complaint is justifiable.

However, as of recently he's been swapping around characters simply because he finds his old characters to be "not good anymore" (Namely Nightmare and Leixia(Xianghua)). Now he's only looked at Leixia's move set, but he's entirely judging Nightmare on initial play.

I'm currently watching him play Legendary Souls Mode (admittedly the evilest mode in the game), and I see him just keep switching about his characters, some he's never played before or even looked at the move list once, and expecting to actually attain some progress.

Now I know for a fact he's unjustified in the fact he's looking for an easy way out by swapping to characters he thinks will automatically do better, as only diligence, patience, and perseverance (especially in legendary souls mode) will lead to victory in this sense. This is the difference between an unskilled and a skilled player, taking the time to train and learn a character instead of juggling between them in an attempt to think this game is like rock paper scissors.

However, by some professional opinions, are some characters nerfed from how they were before?
If so, what would be alternative characters to both Leixia and Nightmare?
If not, how do I convince him to stop thinking this is the easy way out?

The thing is sometimes your character doesn't jive with you. For instance, I mained Sophitia in SCIV, so initially I thought Pyrrha or PO would be an adequate substitute. I couldn't play worth a damn with either of them (I still can't) I relied on too many tools that Soph had, and as they were split among multiple characters now, I couldn't really play the same way I used to.

I gave Pat a try thinking maybe he would be better, but I drop 66B+K like a boss all the time, so I decided against play him. Yes I could practice 66B+K'ing 100 times in a row after 3B, but I just didn't feel like it.

I tried Voldo, Mitsu, Hilde, aPat, Aeon (his BBB is godlike against newbs), . I used Yoshi but I was overwhelmed by his move set. I picked up Ivy and was initially impressed by her tools, but dropped her because I couldn't do her inputs on a controller correctly (can do them fine with a stick now, but meh). I sat on Astaroth for a while, played Xiba for a bit, I thought Natsu was OP (after nerf) so I tried picking her up, but I was frustrated by the length combos (same can be said for Viola). I picked up Raph because I thought if I could win with the 'worst' character in the game I could become a better player, but was quickly frustrated, I took the same mentality to ZWEI, but he's an exception that would take months of use to understand and utilize his tools correctly, same went for Maxi's strings which take a lot of learning. Eventually I wound up with Sieg.

I still haven't touched Cervantes/Nightmare/Ezio/Leixia/Algol, and I would like to pick one up as a secondary at some time, but I'm still working on Sieg at the moment. My girly plays Tira so I know a little of her.

Now I like Sieg, and I was anything but the best Sieg player when I first picked him up, but I felt extremely comfortable playing him, it felt natural for me. I'm still getting better at using his tools, even months after picking him up, but I had to dabble with all of the characters to understand exactly what I was picking up.

TL;DR let him switch all he wants, when he finds a character he's comfortable with he will dedicate the time to being a better _____ player.

A number of characters have been nerfed, dig around for the patch notes for an extensive list.

Not sure what you mean by alternate, Nightmare is still considered very powerful, many Leixia players have opted for Viola (Kayane notably).

If not, how do I convince him to stop thinking this is the easy way out?
If not in regards to what? There doesn't have to be an easy way out, just an enjoyable way in. I can sit with Raph all day and try and be the best Raph, but I'd rather play Sieg. It's good to play with all the characters, it makes you more familiar with them, and even if you don't pick them up at the end of the day you have that additional character knowledge.

Thanks, that actually helped quite a bit, I just sat back and watched him for the most part. I tried to get him over that obstacle of calling the character bad, when it was largely just the way he played. Though that's what I was trying to say to him as well, is that he's not gonna be great with a character overnight. He seemed to get that in IV, but it was wasn't coming to him in V.

Tbh, I hate SCV Ivy, I miss SCIV Ivy not because she was better, but because her moveset was more complex with four stances. Now I feel so empty and find myself relying on lots of moves I wouldn't back in four, I started with Viola from release and went to Leixia. I now main them both, but I still want to learn Ivy problem is, I think it would take the entire summer to become as good with her as I was back in SCIV. So I stick to the second gray haired lady in the game :D But imo, you should stick with your character, good or bad. I'm sticking with Leixia and Ivy and Viola, not because she's good, but because I love her style of a witch.

Le Bello is actually really powerful as a whiff punish character... if someone tries to hit me low, 9B+K.44BKB(and sometimes K) someone attacks high, 326B combo it, someone tries to vertical me, step 11B B!E! 4B... someones standing around like an idiot? 11KK into mix-up

Oh I'm aware of how much Dampierre can do, being relatively speedy and surprisingly powerful. What I meant was that, by comparison, every other character feels somewhat easy to use. Since Damp users have to put that little extra in.

Well, except when compared to Raph. Poor guy.

My SCIV mains were Zasalamel, Amy, and Cervantes, so, by default, my SCV main became Cervantes. I tried Viola to simulate what I had with Amy, but it just wasn't the same. (Actually looking back through the forum I'm probably one of the only people who genuinely misses Amy. I loved that cheap whore.) Zasalamel is irreplaceable though. His moveset was awesome.

I recently picked up Voldo, who I was passable with in IV, and have been doing remarkably well with. With any new character I tend to be awful for about two weeks, but within two days I felt like I had an almost-decent Voldo game.

I know you asked for professional opinions, but I'll give my two cents anyway. I played Nightmare a lot in SC4 and felt incredibly lost when I first tried to play him in SC5. He is certainly not weaker than in SC4, but I think compared to some of the other veterans he requires a little more effort to become comfortable to play in SC5. If he really did like Nightmare in SC4 I would encourage him to play a number of matches with him, and see if it works out.
