As you should know by now... Steve Jobs recently announced the newest product from Apple, the iPad. I figure it deserves its own thread... maybe a discussion. There are actually a lot of things I like about it. I love how small it is, I love the email reader and the calender (I've been looking for something to replace Outlook for a LONG time), and the idea of having a thin tablet with always on 3G to browse the web anywhere. However, there is a lot that I don't like. These are the reasons why I actually wouldn't buy the iPad. I'm hoping one day someone else makes a tablet with the same performance as the iPad, but running Windows 7; which will be hard, since Windows 7 is a lot more intensive than a cell phone OS.
1. The iPad is NOT a computer, its a giant iPhone; you can't install your own programs. You are restricted to the iTunes walled garden. I would like to use the iPad as a portable tournament bracket station as well... install TIO on the move. Sadly, this is impossible, since you can't install TIO. You can only run programs that Apple has permitted you to, according to their arbitrary and unknown certification process.
2. When I said its a giant iPhone, I meant it; you sync the device to your computer through iTunes. iTunes is a TERRIBLE piece of software and it's library system is convoluted and obfuscated. I like the Zune library, because technically it doesn't have a library. In Windows 7, you have "Libraries" in explorer... THAT is the Zune library! The Zune doesn't change how you handle your media, it lets you handle it any way you want. The software is also less bloated, and neat. BTW, if you update to the new version of the Zune software, it updates your windows 7 as well and puts native library support for podcasts into explorer!
3. Flash. Really, Apple is a bunch of assholes. The iPad doesn't have Flash because Apple is a bunch of assholes. The iPad could theoretically be the greatest portable web browser ever created... but the fact that it doesn't have flash, makes it one of the worst. So you can't view YouTube or Hulu on your iPad? Then what good is it?
4. Multi-tasking. Seriously? The iPad doesn't have multitasking? You mean I can't listen to my music and browse the internet at the same time? I can't browse the web and talk on AIM (assuming that Apple has approved the AIM application on the iPad) at the same time? Next thing you'll tell me, is that the device doesn't have cut and paste!
5. Apple's "All-in-One" port. The power charge port, the USB port, the keyboard port... all the same port. This device does NOT natively have any USB ports built in. If you wan't to plug a USB device in, you need to purchase a dongle. Although, you really have no reason to plug a USB thumbdrive in, as you really can't use it for anything since Apple restricts all that crap.
The video I posted above has people for Apple, talking about how the iPad changes for them; that it doesn't force them to change to use the iPad. I couldn't see a more blatant lie for when you're talking about ANYTHING related to Apple. On TWIT this past week, they talked about an Apple term called "Monotony". Its the idea that everything in Apple products have exactly ONE way to do anything: there is one way to close a window, there is one way to change some setting, etc. Yes, I understand, it makes things easier for many people, as no matter what program/app they are using, the one method is there and they already know it.
But with Microsoft products, things are far different. They have the belief that there should be as many ways to do something, as there are users using the system. While yes, it can confuse people because you can close a window by hitting the X on the top right, or pressing ALT+F4, etc. But the idea behind this is that it doesn't force people to change to get used to ONE methodology. They can do things how they want. But on the iPad, you can't install anything unless Apple says you can, you can't view your media libraries outside of iTunes, you can't play flash video, and you can't multitask.
When it comes down to it, the iPad is nothing more than a portal to Apple's walled garden. A place where they can sell you music, videos, and books... which is probably why you can't use Flash. Why would you buy a movie, when you can watch it elsewhere? On this account, the iPad will be a MASSIVE success; but I have a feeling that it will be a critical failure once the honeymoon phase is over.
