The iPad... Love and Hate...

As you should know by now... Steve Jobs recently announced the newest product from Apple, the iPad. I figure it deserves its own thread... maybe a discussion. There are actually a lot of things I like about it. I love how small it is, I love the email reader and the calender (I've been looking for something to replace Outlook for a LONG time), and the idea of having a thin tablet with always on 3G to browse the web anywhere. However, there is a lot that I don't like. These are the reasons why I actually wouldn't buy the iPad. I'm hoping one day someone else makes a tablet with the same performance as the iPad, but running Windows 7; which will be hard, since Windows 7 is a lot more intensive than a cell phone OS.

1. The iPad is NOT a computer, its a giant iPhone; you can't install your own programs. You are restricted to the iTunes walled garden. I would like to use the iPad as a portable tournament bracket station as well... install TIO on the move. Sadly, this is impossible, since you can't install TIO. You can only run programs that Apple has permitted you to, according to their arbitrary and unknown certification process.

2. When I said its a giant iPhone, I meant it; you sync the device to your computer through iTunes. iTunes is a TERRIBLE piece of software and it's library system is convoluted and obfuscated. I like the Zune library, because technically it doesn't have a library. In Windows 7, you have "Libraries" in explorer... THAT is the Zune library! The Zune doesn't change how you handle your media, it lets you handle it any way you want. The software is also less bloated, and neat. BTW, if you update to the new version of the Zune software, it updates your windows 7 as well and puts native library support for podcasts into explorer!

3. Flash. Really, Apple is a bunch of assholes. The iPad doesn't have Flash because Apple is a bunch of assholes. The iPad could theoretically be the greatest portable web browser ever created... but the fact that it doesn't have flash, makes it one of the worst. So you can't view YouTube or Hulu on your iPad? Then what good is it?

4. Multi-tasking. Seriously? The iPad doesn't have multitasking? You mean I can't listen to my music and browse the internet at the same time? I can't browse the web and talk on AIM (assuming that Apple has approved the AIM application on the iPad) at the same time? Next thing you'll tell me, is that the device doesn't have cut and paste!

5. Apple's "All-in-One" port. The power charge port, the USB port, the keyboard port... all the same port. This device does NOT natively have any USB ports built in. If you wan't to plug a USB device in, you need to purchase a dongle. Although, you really have no reason to plug a USB thumbdrive in, as you really can't use it for anything since Apple restricts all that crap.

The video I posted above has people for Apple, talking about how the iPad changes for them; that it doesn't force them to change to use the iPad. I couldn't see a more blatant lie for when you're talking about ANYTHING related to Apple. On TWIT this past week, they talked about an Apple term called "Monotony". Its the idea that everything in Apple products have exactly ONE way to do anything: there is one way to close a window, there is one way to change some setting, etc. Yes, I understand, it makes things easier for many people, as no matter what program/app they are using, the one method is there and they already know it.

But with Microsoft products, things are far different. They have the belief that there should be as many ways to do something, as there are users using the system. While yes, it can confuse people because you can close a window by hitting the X on the top right, or pressing ALT+F4, etc. But the idea behind this is that it doesn't force people to change to get used to ONE methodology. They can do things how they want. But on the iPad, you can't install anything unless Apple says you can, you can't view your media libraries outside of iTunes, you can't play flash video, and you can't multitask.

When it comes down to it, the iPad is nothing more than a portal to Apple's walled garden. A place where they can sell you music, videos, and books... which is probably why you can't use Flash. Why would you buy a movie, when you can watch it elsewhere? On this account, the iPad will be a MASSIVE success; but I have a feeling that it will be a critical failure once the honeymoon phase is over.

QFT.

I was so looking forward to this. But no Multitasking, no USB ports, no SD Slot, no Camera etc...too much negativ stuff. This could have been so fucking nice....

Guess i'll wait for the HP now....

as much as this thing should be a total failure i'm pretty sure apple fan boys are still going to blow an iLoad in their pants over this

I'm still waiting for my iRan... shoes that download music, e-books, and porn. Because whenever I run, I want to listen to System of a Down while watching Housewives Gone Wild amist reading "To Kill a Mockingbird".

But seriously though, what will Steve Jobs think of next?

Have you ever heard something of microsofts courier??

Looks a lot nicer to me, of course this is speculation-land.

That would suck because half the time you order it you would get an iRaq instead.

So I finally got to check out the iPad and I have to admit its a pretty looking piece of hardware but thats probably where the buck stops. Not to mentioned overly priced (but then again it's Apple), I agree its an oversized Iphone/Ipod Touch. It works well for what it does but I agree with most of Jaxel's points mentioned above. But again, we're talking about Apple here. Its suppose to be more than a technical device, right? I mean its suppose to be more than a computer gadget but more a work of art, a symbol or what they stand for, a paradigm shift in tech, right? Hmmm let's see... No readily replaceable battery... check. Proprietary connections... check. Itunes interface & portal... check. Okay sure I can deal with most of that. Ipad phone capabilities (a la oversized N-Gage Nokia taco sidetalk)... forthcoming... check! No flash support... okay maybe. check. Steve Jobs talking shit about Adobe because of Flash.... wtf?

So I'm pretty neutral when it comes to taking sides or playing fanboy to any particular platform. But if I were Adobe right now, I'd cancel the forthcoming release of CS5 suite on the Mac platform and see if Steve would like that. I bet he would but then let's see how the rest of the creative industry would fare if they pull the plug. No more Photoshop. Flash-less Safari (Apple browser)?

That's not to say that I've been happy with Adobe either (since CS4 for the most part was a complete mess).

Steve went on the record saying HTML5 is the future and flash is old and overbloated. And granted, I think HTML5 will be the wave of the future since there's a lot of cool things possible with it. (Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/html5 Also here: http://googlecode.blogspot.com/2010/04/html5-quake-ii.html ) But Steve & co taking the broad approach and deciding to leave it out all together right now and demanding the rest of the industry to follow. Well that's pretty bold. I dont know maybe its genius if he can pull it off but it certainly does feel like a lot of pomp trying to wield the industry his way. But who can blame him? After all, his shareholders depend on him. He helped in making popular what would become the "personal computer", toppled the recording industry over its head and took the smart phone a step further. But I think Apple is getting more and more desperate as the playing field is starting to level off. From mp3 players/portable media devices and e-readers to streaming TV and gaming, everyone wants a piece of the pie. Apple wants to be the only pie in town. But hey, apples are meant to be eaten, right?

Yep.. I think I'll just wait preferably something that'll run Win7 and maybe CS5.
