The single BIGGEST downfall of Soul Calibur 4.

Yeah that is a pretty big one there. The game direly needed some better choices in the options department of either just simply damaging the gear on the custom characters (yeah I know what that entails, but c'mon: it's 2008...) or give an option to turn visible armor damage off so that werewolf guy you've been pounding the heck out of doesn't turn into the equivalent of armorless Arthur at the end of round 3.

Especially since the 2P equipment *has* visible damage versions of it for the non-custom characters, but, yet, it just gets torn to shreds when used on a customized character. That's just plain stupid, the art resources are there, so use them!

CF add dynamic to the game imo. It prevents someone from mindlessly blocking everything until they get an opening. There are good players who turtle and I haven't noticed any of them getting critical finished. If you are constantly flashing red then there's probably something you need to change up. Playing good defensively doesn't mean waiting until your opponent does something punishable. Smart players actually avoid performing punishable moves. There are too many instances where blocking a move gives frame advantage so you should actually use it. Attacking with frame advantage is not the equivalent of mindless bulldogging. I'm not saying attack everytime you have frame advatage because some moves give very little disadvantage and you could fall into a frame trap but you shouldn't be consistently blocking hit after hit endlessly waiting for something punishable.

All characcters have different advantages for instance Hilde is great for ring outs. That fact doesn't make her or any other character cheap it just means you can't play against every character the same way. That to me makes a game more entertaining.

CF's aren't nearly as strong as you think they are, Artilust. I'll gladly fight someone who's working hard to CF me rather than throw/low me. Usually it means I'll win 3 rounds in exchange for their 1 CF. Also, I love getting CF'd in a round I was already going to lose on low life. I like how you just glaze over this point wthout fully realizing what you're saying: "A system implemented into a game that REWARDS an aggressive player who eats many a counter hits and rushes to hit the opponent only to get knocked right back". You're downplaying the value of counter-hit way too much and hyping up the value of CF's. Being a "mindless bulldog" receives a tiny benefit from some soul gauge damage, and a huge penalty for giving away free counter-hits and hence many lost rounds.

"I would say because of the new Soul Gauge the idea of defensive playing and turtling has been killed."
Not at all, turtling is still king because CF is not enough of a deterrant for solid defense even in this game.

No instead of just turning it off, there should be an option to turn on damage to a specific part of your clothing in C-A-C. That would be better.

Why even have equipment destruction in the first place? It's random, *EDIT* it looks stupid, and it doesn't add much, if anything at all, to strategic gameplay.

Just seems like it was another way to put some more boobs in the game.

Yeah I've never found myself specifically attacking a location cause their armor is broken there. Its such a minor bonus that it really doesn't matter. Its not totally random though, but, it can sure seem like it since those armor indicators never change (they really should turn to say red as that section of your armor gets damaged).

Have you played Oof's Talim offline or online? Just curious. Talim doesn't exactly strike me as a CF beast, most of her moves that do heavy gauge damage are unsafe.
WC B:B is only -6.

6A+B is safe.

4B is advantage on block.

I don't really see it. Not saying that she's particularly great at CF. Odds are it's by accident if she manages to get you red since she's more effective just bulldogging you.

I like CF's, they rarely happen when i play peeps, but its nice to see one now and again and always makes me smile. I dont see the big deal tbh, they can be avoided, just learn different strategies and learn to GI for gods sake!

SC4 biggest downfall is the crap online service without a doubt, spend some bread on getting the speeds and connections sorted please.

fANK yOU =-)

Biggest downfall: most of the online community.
But then again, you could say that about any Xbawks game. Even Left4Dead has gone to shit now. :/

L4D too?

Jeez, you'd think people would have learned with Orange Box, I guess not.

Get Valve games on the PC.

Oh, and on topic: 4G and 1G are parries, they'll restore your gauge very quickly. Use like two or three and bamf, you can still turtle. Now if you want to play a defensive game, you need to learn two more moves.

The biggest downfall is that whiff punishing is too secondary for my liking (this matters because I'm selfish). You see, the buffering window is quite possibly more tighter than a virgin vagina, and that means you can no longer take quick steps unannounced. Additionally, your typical punishers have reduced range. Hwang.

It was great for the first couple of weeks, people actually worked together and it was enjoyable to play, but I guess all the good players just moved on. It's not too bad though, cos I have 3 other friends that play, so we can ignore the morons.

And I would, if my PC wasn't so bad.
