The Story Thread

As for Nightmare: the Nightmare will never end. He's Soul Edge, and you can't completely destroy Soul Edge.

Well, the current Nightmare is Inferno on a body host loan.

I agree that Inferno will never die as long as Soul Edge isn't completely destroyed but Nightmare IMO is as good as gone in favor of a new host.

Since everyone wandered off never to be heard from again in SC4's endings, I'm thinking that they'd have to go back and do a prequel. Back when Edgemaster was young.

Nice spin!

Never thought of that possibility, but yes, it can be done.

I prefer that Namco goes forward instead of doing an "Alpha" type of game but this can be done.

At least I know I would see Edgemaster, Zasalamel, Algol and maybe Olcadan there for sure.

Well I know one thing that kind of makes the overall outcome of Soul Calibur 4 kind of blurry is the fact that there is Sig vs Nightmare and then there is Algol who is kind of a good/badguy. In ending such as Sophie's, he is clearly not as evil as the game lets off. However when trying to predict the outcome you have to put into account that if anyone fought Algol or if Algol fought nightmare for ownership of the swords and that's if he didn't already have them...which it seems that he does seeing as he fights with them.... Which only brings up the fact of how he actually has the the Swords since the whole story seems to center around the fact that Sig has Calibur and Nightmare has Edge.

I guess if I were to have to make a prediction it would be somewhere along the lines that Sig went to fight Nightmare for the "final showdown" then one of them won the fight. Then perhaps that when the winner was weak Algol stepped in and like absorbed the sword's power and shit...and the someone liked beat him or something u.u

Wow ok so like when I write I think far too much I am probably just over analyzing this way to much XD

Algol is a key figure in Soul Series canon.

There are many pages talking about the Hero King in the official site and his role in all this.

Algol knew everything about Soul Edge and he helped in creating Soulcalibur to counter it.

Soul Edge has no effect on manipulating Algol's will as his will is stronger than the sword so there should be no problems in using it himself as just a weapon. As such, Algol can easily create duplicates with his knowledge on the swords.

Remember, Algol's current form in SC4 isn't his true form. His body, weapons and skills are some of his memories manifesting on the real plane. He needs the real swords to regain his true corporal form and power.

I find interesting as well that Algol was the first king of Wolfkrone kingdom and as such, a very distant ancestor of Hilde.

And yes, Algol is not evil. He just realizes that for peace to be achieved, there must be some kind of control in someway. Kinda like Hokuto's Raoh in a way.

Btw, is there a connection between Tira and Raphael?
Both their Critical Finish shows them biting the enemy's neck like vampires.

They, along with Amy and one of Sophitia's kids have been "malfested," by contact with the energy of Soul Edge. Malfestation is similar to vampirism, only... Soul Edgier, and without any of the stated specifics that make vampirism seem cool. It may be that I'm missing documentation on these characters, but I've seen nothing that says they have eternal youth, crave blood, shun sunlight, fly, change form, or have any vampire-like symptoms other than dickishness.

Well, Namco did say that this will be the final chapter in the Siegfried/Nightmare arc.

That makes me want to cry, but it doesn't mean they'd both have to leave the cast. I mean, "Soul Edge" was pretty much the final chapter in the Rock arc.

Well, the current Nightmare is Inferno on a body host loan.

I agree that Inferno will never die as long as Soul Edge isn't completely destroyed but Nightmare IMO is as good as gone in favor of a new host.

I would have agreed with that in the SC3 era, but Soul Edge is complete, and it still chooses to fight like that, and although the Siegfried connection is obvious, Nightmare is definetly his own "man" now. As long as Inferno/Soul Edge/post-SC3 Nightmare continues to be the same single individual, I think he'll continue to be a dark knight with a zweihander.

There are many pages talking about the Hero King in the official site and his role in all this.
I thought so, but since SC4 came out, I can't find anything on him that isn't in his game Story Mode. Got a link?

Wow. Thank you very much, but Jesus. Why does the story of this game have to be so hard to track down?

[edit]And .jpgs instead of copyable text? Damn it.

The SC4 strategy guide has a nice bio as well on the characters but I don't think nothing matches the in depth storytelling of Soul Edge's weaponmaster mode.

I'm not sure but I think there are some nice ones on Gamefaqs as well but I don't remember well.

Well this is my first post on 8wayrun. The story is very scattered, with so many different endings. Even though the story up till now in SC4 does not make a lot of sense, there are ways to make this a more solid story line if there will be SC5. This is my take on what the story could be. It is a very long post. I am pretty much writing a plot for the character. So first I just establishing some themes, roles, settings ect. so that it make some sense. If the are any spelling/grammar mistake sorry, I hope it is not confusing.

Themesà there are many themes in the Soul Calibur, I think the most prevalent one are:
(I know all themes are “vs.” but after all this is a fighting game)

1)Good vs. Evil
Soul Calibur vs. Soul Edge
Good Guys vs. Bad Guys
Siegfried vs. Nightmare
Kilik/Xianghua vs. Soul Edge/Nightmare/Cervantes
Taki vs. Soul Edge/ Cervantes

2) Preordained Fate/Destiny vs. Controlling ones own Fate/Destiny
Ivy’s will vs. Her ties to Soul Edge
Zasalamel vs. His curse
Lizardman vs. His curse
Soul Edge purpose vs. Soul Edge’s will

3) Creator vs. Creation
Algol vs. Soul Edge
Zasalamel vs. Nightmare
Ivy vs. Soul Edge/Cervantes

4) Revenge/Vengeance vs Clemency/Grace/Justice
Maxi vs. Astaroth
Rock vs. Astaroth
Setsuka vs. Mitsurugi
Astaroth/Mitsurugi don’t respresent clemency, it is revenge vs. clemency from within Maxi, Rock, Setsuka

5) Desire for more Power vs. Power from Within
Yun-seong vs. Seong Mi-Na
Yun-seong vs. Talim
Raphael vs. Amy

6) Love vs. Duty
Sophitia’s love for her daughter vs. destroying Soul Edge
Cassandra’s love for her sister & family vs. destroying Soul Edge
Xianghua’s love for Kilik vs. destroying Soul Edge
Tira’s love for Nightmare vs. finding a suitable host
Voldo’s love for master vs. finding Soul Edge

Establishing Roles
The main player in the Soul Calibur Universe that really need to be involved in the finial showdown of Soul Edge and Soul Calibur:
Algol, Cassandra, Cervantes, Ivy, Kilik, Nightmare, Siegfried, Taki, Tira, Xianghua, Zasalamel, Edge Master, and Olcadan

Other characters that important to make the story flow and cover holes in the plot:
Amy, Hilde, Lizardman, Raphael, Seong Mi-Na, Sophitia, Talim, Yun-seong

Characters really affect Soul Edge vs. Soul Calibur story line:
Astaroth, Maxi, Mitsurgi, Rock, Setsuka, Voldo, Yoshimitsu

Soul Edge Current State
The pieces of Soul Edge is scattered at various places, I am assuming that now the remaining pieces of Soul Edge are at 8 places:
Algol—has pieces of Soul Edge in one of his arms(I think it left one)
Cervantes—has many pieces within this body
Ivy—her sword is a part of Soul Edge
Lizardman—some evil seed in his body, which turn him to a lizard (I think)
Nightmare—has soul edge
Rapheal—probably has pieces of Soul Edge with in him after the fight with Nightmare
Taki—one of her wepons has a piece of Soul Edge
Sophitia’s daughter

Setting
Most of the character will battle at the bottom of Algol’s castle/tower.
Algol is crystallize sitting in this thrown inside the tall castle/tower

Plot
These are just what I think should happen in SC5 and the plot is not very detailed. They are just the jist of what I think should happen.

Mini Plot-- Involving Maxi, Rock and Astaroth: Theme Vengeance/Justice
Maxi desires to kill once and for all Astaroth. When they meet and fight, Astaroth kills Maxi. After that Rock appears and also fight Astaroth. In their battle Rock kill Astaroth.
Reason I say Maxi should die is because his perspective is through revenge, and that became his down fall. Where as rock his perspective is through justice, know Astaroth would be a bigger threat if left alive.

Mini Plot-- Involving Setsuka and Mitsurugi
Setsuka feels or see some unnatural forces happening, I know Mitsurugi would be heading to that destination and she heads to that direction. She will come across Mitsurugi and face him in a duel. After a long battle they are extremely exhausted, and so they both prepare for a final strike. They both unleash their blades at each other; they stand across from each other face opposite direction. Mitsurugi smiles and falls to the ground dead. Setsuka then fall to her knees she is satisfied she has got her revenge, but she is wound severely and know she cannot be save, as she take her last breath she say “I will soon be with you” referring to her master.

Sub Plot-- Involving Seong Mi-Na, Talim, and Yun-seong: theme desire for power vs, power from within
Yun-seong diser Soul Edge and tries to obtain it by heading towards where the main battle is, Seong Mi-Na tries to stop him, but he defeats her but does not kill her. As he get closer to the main battle Talim intervenes and stop Yun-seong, she defeats him without killing him. She then say something rhetorical, and Yun-seong learns from his mistake.

Sub Plot-- Involving Rapheal, Amy, and Nightmare: Theme desire of power
Rapheal behave more and more aggressive, due to the Soul Edge pieces in him. It escalates to the point where he kills Amy, the one he wanted to protect by obtaining more power. In his weaken mental state, Nightmare come to get back the shards of Soul Edge, and kill Rapheal.
Reason is to enforce that power leads to destruction and loved one get hurt.

Sub Plot-- Involving Sophitia, Cassandra, and Kilik
Shophita’s daughter having the evil seed/Soul Edge in her becomes worse day by day. Eventually Kilik meets up with Sophitia and help her daughter using his artifacts to transfer evil seed/Soul Edge into him. As thanks Cassandra team up with Kilik on his quest to destroy Soul Edge

Sub Plot-- Involving Cassandra, Kilik, and Lizardman
On there journey they come across Lizardman. Cassandra fight him and defeats him but does kill. Kilik using his artifacts again transfers the evil seed/Soul Edge into him.

Main Plot-- Involves Siegfried, Hilde, Nightmare, Tira, Zasalamel
Nightmare in his quest to obtain all the pieces of Soul Edge to make the swords whole once more encounters Zasalamel. Zasalamel want to take Soul Edge from him to try and use it energies to lift this curse. So they battle Nightmare is the victor he then stabs Zasalamel and mocks him about wanting to die. Nightmare drain him of his power and soul and Zasalamel think to himself “think is not the death I long for”. His body become ash and differs in to the wind.
Meanwhile Siegfried and Hilde join forces to fight Nightmare. The two arrive at the bottom where Nightmare and Tira wait for them. The 4 do battle; with Siegfried wielding Soul Calibur strikes a heavy blow to Nightmare. Nightmare realizes that he will lose at this rate, grabs Tira by her throat and tell her you will be a part of me. Tira smile and starts to laugh, tells her self that she will never be alone. And with that, Nightmare absorbs her soul, and throws Tira’s lifeless corpse away. He continues the battle and is able to subdue and kill both Siegfried and Hilde.

Main Plot-- Cervantes, Nightmare Kilik, Xianghua, Cassandra
After nightmare defeated Siegfried and Hilde, Kilik, Xianghua, and Cassandra come to try and defeat Nightmare. Kilik alone fight Nightmare, and during the fight Xianghua see the sword Soul Calibur and take it. Kilik defeats Nightmare, as Nightmare tries to get back up, Cervantes shows up taking Soul Edge from Nightmare and Stabs him with his own sword. Nightmare power and body is absorbed into Soul Edge, the sword them merges with Cervanter’s weapon. He then quick strikes Kilik sensing that he has pieces of Soul Edge he absorbs the pieces from Kilik and is about to kill him, when Xianghua come to his aid with Soul Calibur. The two do battle, but Cervantes to strong for Xianghua, he knocks out Soul Calibur from her hand, then Cassandra come and uses her shield to defend Xianghua. She tells Xianghua to take Kilik and get out of here. Cassandra can do nothing but defend, her shield begin to crack.

Main Plot-- Cervantes, Cassandra, Taki, and Ivy
Cassandra feel she is done for but then she see a shadow pass in front of and then a loud not of sword clashing. The woman told her to get away, Cassandra got up and ran, and turn just to see who saved her. It was Taki, the same women who save her sister life, Cassandra and continued to run to help Kilik and Xianghua. Cervantes gleamed with a smile contemplating how he who shred this woman apart. As the though and struggled fighting with Taki, he felt another presents, it was his daughter, Ivy. Taki and Cervantes battle long and hard. During the battle Ivy spoted Soul Calibur and took it. The sword responds to her and took shape to her fighting style. As the fight continued Taki found an opening and strike Cervantes in the neck. She said it over for you, and Cervantes walked back little, covering his neck with his hand and was bit shaken. And said on contrary it over for you. He flew and stab Taki in the stomach. He said to her he was immortal and took her weapon that contains a piece of Soul Edge. Ivy came running to try and save Taki, Cervantes threw her body and said “I’ll deal with you later” he then ready himself for the next battle with his daughter. The father and daughter fought, but Ivy got the upper hand, and impaled Cervantes with Soul Calibur. Cervantes laughed saying her was immortal but as he finished this sentence this body soon turned to ash once again, the power of Soul Calibur made Cervantes killable. When his body became ash I got her soul back, and soon as she did she felt and burning sensation in the hand that held Soul Calibur. She dropped Soul Calibur.

Main Plot-- Invloving Ivy and Soul Edge
Then the pieces and energy of Soul Edge wrapped itself around Ivy and her weapon. Ivy became possessed; in her mind she was shackled and see and mirror image of herself glowing red that possessed her physical body. Soul Edge then smiled, and started to walk to up the tower, it only need one more peace to be complete.

Main Plot-- Edge Master, and Olcadan Kilik, Xianghua, Cassandra
As the 3 were walking away they were meet by Edge Master and Olcadan. (Out of ideas at this point)

Wow, you've really kind of gone off the reservation there in a few places. Your grasp of the story so-far is mostly rooted in canon, but there are items that I think came out of your own imagination, and things that you're not up-to-date on. I'm not really comfortable talking about future story theories, either. I'm going to have to check out of the conversation if we're going to turn on our imaginations and start thinking about what we "want."

Some things you said are wrong, and other things I'm just not comfortable with. Here are two examples:
Soul Edge current state - if you read the SC4 stories for Nightmare and Cervantes, both mention that Soul Edge has called all of its pieces home, and is whole again.
Numerous listings of characters that are important in different ways - The characters have interesting lives, sure, but from a writing perspective, virtually any of them can leave at any time. If we never see Rock again, most people will not care. -And how is Olcadan important to anybody? I missed that.

The SC4 strategy guide has a nice bio as well on the characters but I don't think nothing matches the in depth storytelling of Soul Edge's weaponmaster mode.

I'm not sure but I think there are some nice ones on Gamefaqs as well but I don't remember well.

Gamefaqs has a guide that compiles reams of text from all the games, but it's a bit sloppy and sometimes incomplete. The SC4 guide just has transcriptions of the text at the beginning of each character's story mode, nothing more, and their font is hard to read.

So... Is the SC3 prologue the first mention of Algol? It's strange how complete and accurate it is on that site, and how everything else in their summary is taken directly from other games. They put a lot of effort into the story of Algol, considering that they didn't use it in-game.

I think Algol is really going to be a main character, since he is the first boss character with his own fighting style. Nightmare and Siegfried just can't be removed from Soul series since they are Soul Calibur and Soul Edge.

I think Algol is really going to be a main character, since he is the first boss character with his own fighting style.
I look forward to a game where Algol is a regular character and not a boss. Maybe the scaredy-cat crybabys will let us enjoy him then.

Soul Edge current state - if you read the SC4 stories for Nightmare and Cervantes, both mention that Soul Edge has called all of its pieces home, and is whole again.
Not entirely true. SE has been regenerating itself ever since it was shattered. It collected enough pieces to become whole again counting the new growth. There are still shards floating around however. (Maxi still has his IIRC, though they seem to be degrading.)

Btw, is there a connection between Tira and Raphael?
Both their Critical Finish shows them biting the enemy's neck like vampires.

Actually, Tira kisses them, she doesn't bite them.

Which is good cause I'd much rather rend someone's soul to pieces with ak iss of death then bite their neck and make them spend an eternity as Amy's "pet"

in fact now that I think of it I'm gonna go get into a fist fight with raphael....

Actually Tira's dickishness is due to her schizophrenia, combined with her consciencness (I know that is spelled horribly wrong, shut up.) being cut into two separate personalities by the power of soul edge and soul calibur clashing in the whatchya ma call it place in 3.

I really do hope this is the end of the long draw out story arc of Seigfried & Nightmare. It will be sad though to see Nightmare go, because Project Soul doesn't have the guts to kill of fabio. One of them has to go though for it to work.

As for Zasalamel, he dies just like everyone else. The difference is he is reincarnated with his memories in tact. So its not that he would live to present day, its that he retained his memories until present day.

Anyway, of all the shit Project Soul called 'endings' in SCIV, I have to say I like Cervantes's the best. He gets his sword back and gives the axe to that wanna be boss Algol. If anything can fix this broken story, that's the best place to start from.

But all that finality in all the endings makes me think they really want to time jump with the next game. Be it a prequel (gah, Taki and Mitsurugi, the teenage years...) or a modern weapon brawler... without guns. Modern sounds like it could be cool, have some familliar favorites, Cervantes is undead, Ivy finally decides to embrace her evil side and too becomes undead, and Taki perfects some insanely difficult to master FuMa ninja magic that gives her ageless immortality. We could see similar looking decendants of Mitsurugi & Setsuka (who knows, perhaps they hooked up), as well as Mina and Yun, the current leader of the manji clan of course, a big native american who's sorta like Rock, you all know the drill. Well anyone who played Tekken 3 does anyway.

The huge problem with modern (aside from having half the characters replaced by newcomers who fight JUST like them), is that Soul Calibur's story is NOT a tournament. Its a quest. It makes sense that everyone has weapons because its more effective than questing with just your bare firsts. Modern times would mean modern weapons, and that means guns, so it no longer is the same game. Tekken OTOH is a tournament... why Yoshi is allowed a sword and no one else is... who knows, but its a tournament with apparently some rules. But it doesn't matter, the series has lost any sort of logic in the story anyway, so would it be so bad having a modern setting with no projectile weapons?

The bottom line, any which way they progress the story they need to KILL off some characters. Remember, just because a character got the axe in the STORY doesnt mean they must be left out of the Vs aspect of the game. Ive been saying for a long time now that they need a 'character graveyard' of sorts. Such a concept would keep the hardcore players happy, and yet allow the game to actually PROGRESS.

Any way you slice it, Im sick and tired of the current story arc. Having THREE games in the series happen in the SAME YEAR is friggin retarded. The story was at its prime from Soul Edge to SC one, made some progress to SCII then STOPPED. Its time to evolve or just quit all together and make it as pointless as Virtua Fighter. Along with it, they can look at similar levels of sales in the US because story drives a casual market.

-DeathCom

Actually Tira's dickishness is due to her schizophrenia, combined with her consciousness being cut into two separate personalities by the power of Soul Edge and Soul Calibur clashing in the lost cathedral.

It's both, isn't it? I'm sure she's malfested too.

My hope for next game is that Raphael gets to be a more important villain.

He already is a vampire and has the charisma for it. He can even be a villain while hostin Soulcalibur.

Algol will return. Too important storywise to drop just like that.

And that Tira getting burned by Nightmare isn't canon and that she gets to be the new Soul Edge host. That would be interesting. Either she or Raphael will make great hosts.

And of course, Setsuka returning.
