What made you give your characters the style that they use?

As the title says, how did you decide on what style the characters you make use? Is it determined by weather or not you can play them? Is it based on playing that character's style in previous games? Is it based on being able to play the playstyle? Share your thoughts.

For me, it depends on any number of things. In the case of original characters from my writing or various recreations, it's the closest resemblance to their original fighting style; both in terms of the weapon itself and their in-game movement. I've also made many characters that are more or less based on the weapon style itself - the thought of who would use it, what would look good with it, how it moves, and so on. I do sometimes avoid making characters with playstyles I'm not good with or favor ones I am, but for the most part, I like to try and make one of each style in the game. (Not been as successful with SCV so far, but I did manage it in SCIV!)

There have been a couple cases where I've used a style simply because it's what I was most used to or have used in the past, though; in fact, I have one character that's been remade in each incarnation using Xianghua's style, now Leixia's - and that choice of style was originally made because I happened to be looking for a one-handed sword and was fairly good at playing her. It's become somewhat of a tradition to make that character now, and I'll probably continue to do so as long as Soul Calibur offers a CaS mode and a variation of that style. :)

Shit, most of my CaS is either 2 of my mains. Lol! So I guess it depends on whether or not I can use them, and I keep this in mind while I'm creating them to avoid making a character that doesn't fit the style.

I make CAS's for styles I want to learn.

I wanted to learn Xiba, Rain was born. I wanted to learn Mitsurugi, Teruko was born.

I wanted to learn Viola......lol you just don't replace Viola.

I give them styles that fit best for their background/biography/personalities/what I imagined them to be before creating. For instance, many of them are based on my OCs, so I try to get something close without breaking their personality too much (it's not because she uses two swords that I have to give her Natsu or Cervantes' if it's NOT fitting at all).

The voices (goes with personality) affect the choice a lot at times too. I won't give the Super Human female voice to a Pyrrha style, ever. If it was Pyrrha O. however...

Sometimes it's during creation too, such as one of my CAS ending up using Raph's style while I originally had ZWEI's in mind (it didn't look good).

What about you?

Rei is a serious but tomboyish ninja. So she gets Mitsu, Yoshi, and Natsu. Yoshi is her primary, but I pretend she doesn't attack like Yoshi haha. Natsu and Mitsu however are just perfect. Natsu especially.

Suzume is an upbeat lady. So Xiba and Leixia work.

Arnora is a chivalrous viking......I kinda make her use Xiba for that one weapon, Aeon is just for looks, but Hilde works best.

Just three examples of my originals haha.

Well since I have a decent amount of styles I'm proficient with I try to pick which one best suits what I'm going for.
Ex. My generic Ranger (like bows and arrows. Not the Mighty Morphin ones) uses Patroklos's style.

I also choose styles that best suit the look of my character.
Ex.Tomboyish Modern Day Solider girl that uses Maxi's style.

I rarely make characters based around one particular style but I do have a Reptilian Female (Aeon) and Kenshi (a.Patroklos).

Normally my favorite CAS gets my master characters style (Tira). If I'm going for a theme or look, I'll choose what goes well with the design. If I'm doing a recreation, I'll use what I think makes the most sense for the character I'm mimicing. I one particular case, I chose based on the placement of the special equipment.
Clara was originally Rapheal's style, but the wind up hey I worked so long on for her back moved too erratically (because It'ds actually aligned to her right shoulder and not her back). now now she uses Phyrra Omega and I barely notice that it's "floating"

I tend to use a little bit of every reason stated so far.
My most-used OCs tend to use my main fighting styles because it fits, though, one of them used to be Zasalamel, so I was really disheartened by the lack of a goddamn scythe in the game, as it's what she is SUPPOSED to use. Nightmare isn't a terrible replacement, even if both styles are totally different, as it can still fit the character's personality. Since I used to draw comics and make stories using these characters, I know how they fight, so when I toss NM or Sieg on them, it's not because I'm good with those styles, it's because the style fits.

When it comes to recreations which is what I mostly do, it MUST MAKE SENSE in some form or fashion. I don't only play with mains like some people, so I don't mind making characters using fighting styles I have less than 1% use time with if I'm interested in learning them (such as making Vlad the Impaler use Hilde), but likewise will probably never touch a character that's using a style I outright suck with (Columbia using Tira. I lose with Tira 100% of the time, so I gave up and deleted her). I don't need to be fantastic with a style to put it on a character, I just have to not blow with it.

In any case, seeing a character/weapon combo such as Cloud using Raphael is a crime against humanity. A combo like that should never happen. The guy who did this said he can't play Nightmare or Sieg at all....but then why do you need a Cloud in the first place?

Same as Murasame: the background I imagine is the key to my choice. My main CaS is a vengeful guy from the upper class, he was struck by a shard from Soul Edge. I gave him Raph's style. He travels with a mystic (Viola's), a young inexperienced girl (Pyrrha's) and a ninja boy (Natsu's obviously). He is searching for his best friend (Sieg's) who now works as a mercenary for Schwarzwind. It's just that simple :)

One of the reasons I made my Battles of La Naval characters was that these were styles I was interested in learning. I like CaS, so having a character I like looking at with a style I'm interested in learning makes for a more enjoyable experience. However, if I get an idea for a character that has a strong case for using a style I don't prefer, then I'll go ahead and make them with that style anyway for authenticity.

I'll also consider animations and poses when picking a style. I won't consider Leixia, Viola, Pyrrha, Hilde, Ivy, Tira, Elysium, or Oprah styles, unless the character is supposed to be effeminate. If I need to use one of those styles for a recreation of a male character, I'll make a genderbend. I won't give an ordinary human Yoshimitsu's style or a serious character Dampierre's style, either.

(@LordDraco3) I completely agree. Even though a great deal of my CAS are not styles I'm compleately comfortable with, I avoid Nightmare, Siegfried, and Astaroth because I'm throughly blowful with them. If I ever make a CAS using those styles, it would be a soley cosmetic CAS

For me, it's a combination of a few things.
Sometimes I have a weapon in mind as I'm making the character - I always want something to suit their personality.
The weapons should also suit their outfits. In other words, skinny female women with little clothing don't wield gigantic axes, and men with huge gauntlets clearly designed for 2 handed swords don't have soul of Leixia.
I often just try out different styles and select "view" until I find something that suits them well, and sometimes I find an unexpected match.

However, I do love to use my favourite CaS online, so as a result I have a lot of aPat, Cervy and Viola characters and none using styles I'm dreadful with like Aeon, Maxi and Hilde.

I agree with all your comments, what i do is I usually start with the weapon as a focus point.

For my CAS, the additional weapons are a great source of inspiration (for a strong theme), so i end up with weapons and styles usually pretty dead-on with the CAS' persona.
The Fake Ashigaru used on Hilde allowed me to produce an asian version of Hilde, while the Trident weapon (see below) also inspired me into doing an Atlantis themed Hilde.

Of couse, there are obvisous choices the other way around : doing Joker or my Harley Quinn, i could not have thought of any other style than Dampierre's :

A few examples of weapon based CAS :

The Wasp with Voldo style and "insect claw" lookalike weapon :

When creating alternates, i also choose a weapon that would be suitable for the CAS' persona, provided the moveset is not way-off :
