Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation Reviews Soul Calibur IV...

Yes, Yahtzee may be completely missing the point by disregarding the multi-player aspect of SC4, but the fact remains that the game has a single-player part, and he is certainly justified in reviewing that part of the game. He is right in that this part of the game feel pretty minimal and disjointed. I had a lot of fun with the single-player modes in SC2 (Weapon master, Time attack, Survival), but I can not exactly say the same in SC4. On the other hand, the AI in SC4 is the best I have seen in a fighting game, and the difficulty levels are well tuned to give a very good variety, so I do play quite a lot of versus against the CPU.

Eh I did find single player a bit weak. A couple of the tower missions were...annoying, but honestly the single player was disappointing compared to 3 or 2. I'm pretty sure anyone that played pre SC4 will agree with that statement to some degree. As far as the AI is concerned, I think the ones in SC2 were far more difficult. Even the highest difficulty AI seems to fall for certain moves over and over (more so in 3). In SC2 I found you had to mix it up a little more.

One thing that Yahtzee points out that is kind of true though. A lot of games are abandoning any real single player effort to put focus on multiplayer, and with some of these games lagging to hell and back, it isn't really worth it to a lot of people that are used to better. Since the guy only reviews single player, the bashing was inevitable.

i'm currently not liking the AI in SC4, as all it actually does is read your moves and react accordingly. though that seems to hold true for levels lowers than "very hard".

for example, last night i was playing a a CAS sieg story on hard and all the CPU did was run up to me and block. thus opening themselves up for a free throw.

however, in training (as well as floor 57-59), where the CPU can be (or is) set at edgemaster difficulty. it fights at a good pace. it's still quite obvious that it reads your button inputs, but only then does it become a good challenge.

hmm... i guess it's just a love/hate thing i guess xD

Well, one of the things that the earlier floors do too is cater to the unlockable item. There was one set of floors where the first two, the cpu didn't block crap. Then, the last one blocked just about everything. Coincidentally, in order to get the item for that last floor, you had to CF all 3 of the cpu's charas. :/ In that regard tower is very meh. Weapon Master in SC2 was awesome for me learning the game for the first time, in terms of basic stuff.

Also, I really don't like how Arcade's opponent order is almost always the same. In this entire time the opponent variation has been, in order of frequency:
1 - X, Talim, Yun
2 - Voldo, Mina, Asta
3 - I don't remember
4 - Ivy
5 - Lizardman, Zas
6 - Sieg/Nightmare
7 - Starkiller
8 - Algol

WTH I say.

The AI of many a fighting game on high levels is just read/react/punish at processor speeds; I enjoy it for the sake of learning the moves of a chara I don't play but in the end it's worthless in testing your own strategies because in life 50/50 mixup pretty close to 50/50, not 0/100 because the computer reacts "correctly".

Really? That's what I've gotten for Mitsu (whose order is always those first ones listed, since I played him most), Asta, Taki, Lizardman, Soph, Setsuka, X and Zas o_O I know 'cause really those are the only people I've tried out extensively so far. Though, I don't think it's much to complain about because if anyone really wanted to just get used to some character by CPU vs mode does that easy :P

It could be random, excluding Algol and the Apprentice. But well, if I want to test stuff or something, I set the AI on Edge Master and play versus against it.

It's not as annoying as it was in SCIII.

Guys, remember street fighter 2, the most iconic fighting game of all time? It had no single player, no unlockables... nothing. It was basically a direct arcade port.

I don't know about y'all, but I don't mind too much that the single player is lacking.

Hell, CAS is a single player game on its own.

That might be true. Regardless, I think SC3's depth in single player put some high hopes up for SC4 and the newest installment just didn't deliver. Besides, times and standards have definitely changed over the years.

SCIV single player was just bad. You can say the same about most fighting games though. Kind of felt like this review was pointless.

Most of his reviews I've seen so far rely heavily on the 'look, funny pictures and fast talking' gimmick, and it's not like it's embellishment to a solid review or anything. Like Onslaught pointed out his entire message seems to be 'single player was too easy', cheap remarks about him apparently disliking fighting games in general or the game's emphasis on big tits which isn't exactly a stellar insight when it comes to the SC series aside. But hey, funny pictures, fast talking. Hilarious.

Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation Reviews Soul Calib

I havent read every post so maybe its already been said but Yatzee also made it clear from the start that he doesent 'get' fighting games. He has even gone as far as to not review Street Fighter 4 which considering its a sequal to a pioneer of todays fighting games really shows that... well he wasnt lying when he said he doesent get fighting games!

Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation Reviews Soul Calib

I've been a fan of Yahtzee's for a while but I still would like to see a review with his style done by someone who likes fighting games and multiplayer.
