no arguement here. just a fun discussion. but i agree in the sense where hip hop became a fad, then yeah, it's time is ended.. but it's all reciprical. that's the thing about fads.. they get out of fashion but eventually they come back into style. but to say it's right dead.. that's bullocks. having said that, if we were to say it's no longer fashionable.. "i agree" like the gps of the lex.

about ortiz, i think he's great. it's not just his technique.. but mainly his charisma. you can hear his passion when he spits. technically may not be the greatest, but i think his heart has to count for something.

and just cause.. has nothing to do with hip hop.. but.. does.

yessir.. always down to listen to Mrs. simone. but I'll be honest.. I didn't know about her until i heard her sample off of talib's joint. and that was when i was researching samples, both wanting to hear the original song and then try to decipher how the producers took that original track and remade it to suit their tune.. just generate a whole new level of perspective and respect on these producers and their music.

and then when i discovered how many songs are actually covers for these original tracks... mind = blown...

If you don't like today's hip hop, either dig deeper, or look into the past.

This ridiculous idea that hip hop is dead is invalid from the moment the phrase came out of the originator's lips. "Boo hoo, hip hop is dead because today's topics are both money, ho, and violence." So what? It' not about what is said, it's about how it's been said. You want a really good gangsta rap album with awesome lyrical content? There's Smif n Wessun's Dah Shinin. I might not like the typical rappers' topic, but I refuse to dismiss it as something that has damaged hip hop or music in general. My idea of mainstream hip hop may not be what is currently the "in" thing today, but goddamn you if you think it no longer has a chance to "resurrect" itself.

Oh, and BTW, gangsta rap did contribute to something positive in hip hop. It observed, showed, and became a symbol of, the hedonistic tendencies in Western society and culture. And EVERYONE wants to be hedonistic. If you think that gangsta rap should be REPLACED BY socially conscious rap and other topics instead of being put on the same level with others, you're an idiot. You're basically trying to guilt trip a girl into fucking you because you think her smiling and being happy about the present world is a BAD thing.

You take the good with the bad, otherwise neither exists.

If you can't figure out objectively how the mainstream mind works, and are still complaining about the state of mainstream hip hop, STFU and GTFO.

They all sound the same in clubs because IT'S HARDER TO CHANGE RHYTHM IN CLUBS WITHOUT BREAKING RAPPORT WITH THE AUDIENCE. We live in the digital age. The biggest topic of the digital age is EFFICIENCY. We use computers which compared to type writer are OVER 9000! We use the internet which compared to libraries are OVER 9000! We use broadband now which compered to dial up is OVER INFINITY X 9000+! You seriously think people have the patience these days to go staccato over their shit when they can streamline it instead, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S PART OF SOCIAL NORMS AND VALUES?

So... my favourite rapper of all time is Pharoahe Monch. The guy's way ahead of his time. As a matter of fact, despite his similar views on today's hip hop as other hardcore head, he's the reason my view of hip hop have evolve to what it is today. I might not like the current state of mainstream hip hop, but if the guidelines are learnt, any artist could change it's current state.

Shit, I'm seeing a change in mainstream hip hop. I don't remember mainstream rappers bring metaphors and flow into their track (no matter how small it is) pre-Carter 3. And I don't even like Lil' Wayne.

That's all I have on hip hop. For now, anyway.
 
You're silly. I'm long past being in an argumentative mood, but the point of any decent argument is to refute what an opponent's is saying objectively (not generalize statements made and then argue against them with some subjective whatnot like it's supposed to be the be-all end-all). Either way, I don't think anyone's interested in this topic anymore, but I didn't want to leave you hanging on a reply.

Objectivity may highlight a point without bias, but it won't change your opinion, will it?

And the whole point of an argument, decent or not, is to change your opponents' opinions on the given subject. And especially on a topic where passions and emotions run high, objectivity is the least effective method to do so.

So I'm not the one being silly here.

@Madnis: 8WR is pretty slow on my comp, so it took a while to read the various posts and shit.
 
lobo: The amount of original melodic flows he's produced, it has only ever heightened my intelligence level. I have this extreme thing for originality, and he's always pushing that bar instrumentally with his voice. It reminds me of a guitarist that comes up with really fun riffs to listen to.

Of course I can blame him. The definition of music clearly states...ah, nevermind.

Anyway, maybe someone will do a top 5 thread on other genres too. I'm all for various kinds of metal, particularly progressive.
