Is SC2 much better than 4?or am i the olny one who thinks so?

Single player experience. I liked SC 2 and 3 more. Gameplay wise I like SC4 much more. I never got competitive with 2 so I never saw it at high level play, but the elements in SC4 are very appealing. Mechanically I like SC4 waaaaay too much, but it needs some balancing.

Soul Calibur 4 is very toned down, to the point where fights aren't as exciting to watch. And it's noobed up, to where it's harder to punish mistakes. You have less juggles, so if you whiff you won't die; I guess they did this to tone down turtling which is still the best way to go in high level play.

Soul calibur 2 had a great flow to it, from the animations, to the buffer system and the cancels. That engine was very free, it pretty much let you do what you wanted with you character. Just watch these videos and be reminded how each game looked in terms of flow.

compared to 2 and 3, 4 has no singleplayer, lol :P
additionally, what i liked better with 3 than 4 is the pace. As you can see in videos in KingAce's post, 3 was much faster. And i like it fast :D
other aspects of gameplay are better in sc4, i think

SC2, in a nutshell, at top level

Step-G Step-G Step-G Step-G Step-G Step-G Step-G 22B 1B FC 3B repeat
throw in some G2 for good measure. It looked exciting, but it played boring as fuck.

SC3 was a trainwreck. SC3AE was almost a masterpiece. SC4 is alright. Imo, leaps and bound better than SC2 and 3. SC2 was like Tekken with weapons =\

SC2 had better quality players than SC4, better competition. This is also back in the day where arcades were more popular and our economy (USA) wasn't garbage. Regardless, gameplay, was more balanced. There was no real wall combos. GI made more sense. No perfect JI garbage. Step-G was great. Top tier chars were top tier, but none were broken. Much less complaining in that game vs 3 or 4. I would kill to have that game back in real competition vs the current garbage some of us still play.

SC2 was and still is very fun, I think at high level play people played it safe but boring. But it wasn't necessary designed like Tekken it's just that's how things went with the nasty side step in that game.

I recently rebought a copy of SC2 since I have no idea where my original copy went to. Overall, more work and attention was put into the game than SC4, and it's fun to mash buttons, but I am sure that I would get bored with it if I tried to play it on a high level.

I'm sure that everyone is going to have their preference, but competitively, SC4 is better. I just wish there were more people that played offline and didn't have to quit the game for something else or whatever other reason there may be, but I can't change the past. I just try to make the most out of the situation I am in which I have been very successful at doing so, and to have as much fun as I can with the game which I'm still doing today.

as a maxi fan, i believe that maxi's moves were better in soul calibur 2, he was much more agile and efficient and could dodge back for exemple, something namco striiped out in soul calibur 4, overall, characters were much more balanced , one thing that annoys me a lot in sc4 is that longe range characters tend to be faster that short range ones ,another thing is that for whatever reasons namco has overexagerated the speed of some characters: amy, ivy , yoshi, taki ; these are the kind of nonsense that make we want to play sc2 again, i hope they put it on the store soon.

Personally I feel that SC2 had a "magic" to it that SC3 and 4 don't have. I played SC2 for days on end and I've used Link over a 1100 times. The characters were better in a way I can't explain, when I play SC4 I play it for fun and a good time, but when I play SC2 a fire burns in me and I play to win and be the King of Soul Calibur! Lol, Like I said SC2 had a "Magic" about it. I also want Link to return! Lol (PS Talim's moveset in SC2 was godly)

i like sc4 for gameplay...but music, stages and single player are so mediocre compared to any other chapter....

I have to say, there was a certain "magic" to SC2 that 3 or 4 didn't have. I started on SC2, with my friends introducing me to it. We would have like 15 people in the house, all really good soul calibur players. We would play all bloody day, and never get bored. People would trash talk one another because their cheap etc., and sometimes the arguments would result in violence. There were countless, "fuck you, asshole" comments going back and forth. Looking back on it (that was some years ago), I remember the characters being pretty damn balanced, way more balanced than 3 or 4.

Those were the days. And then something happened. SC3 came out, and everyone switched over. Soon after that, the many friends that I had in SC2 poofed out of my life. WHY? because we all mutually agreed over a few weeks (It didn't take long) that SC3 was completely unbalanced and no fun competitively. It basically came down to 90% of us ended up using only SOPHITIA, because of her gay-ass 11AA, or WR A+B, both being unblockable and both WAY TOO FAST for an unblockable.

Long story short, the group collectively stopped playing SC, while I kept playing my broken SC3.

And then when SC4 came out, I thought that I could revive SC amongst my friends who had stopped shortly after the release of 3. Much to my surprise, Namco did not give us a better, more balanced game. While the mechanics in general were better, and I loved the SOUL GAUGE concept, it wasn't long before someone discovered HILDE's doom combo from a youtube video. Within 5 days, EVERYONE in the group was using HILDE. Sounds like the past just repeated itself huh? Wait a minute namco, I thought 4 was supposed to be more balanced. WTF were they thinking with HILDE?

This is how I rate the game in terms of balance SC2>SC3>SC4.

Trying to make SC more balanced, they ironically created the most unbalanced fighting game to date. Good going Namco, looks like you really put a lot into this, NOT.

And WTF is up with the speed of 4? Why did they think slowing the game down was needed? I'm curious about the logic behind that one. Apparently they wanted everyone do be able to block on reaction. Personally, the guessing game made it more fun for me.

I would rather Namco not even bother making SC5, if there just going to be lazy like they did with 4, then 5 is gonna be even worse than 4. They should just leave it alone at this point, I don't think they have what it takes any longer (team soul) to make good, balanced fighting game anymore. What they need is dedication to building the best fighting game ever, and dedication is exactly what they lack as shown in SC4.

The amount of stupid I didn't notice in this thread disappoints me.

2010 World Game Cup was collectively agreed that it was the most competitive moment of any SC era. So saying SC2 had more quality competition is false.

And SC3 Sophitia probably was the best character in the game. However, it was because of a combination of things. Saying her WS [A+B] was too powerful is wrong because I consistently back stepped that move on reaction. Only Astaroth could not do this. I think she was the best but not for the reasons you stated. That's just scrubby complaints. SC3 console was the most balanced overall, but VC obviously doesn't apply to this statement. With VC banned there's no reason to cry about SC3 competitively.

SC3 wasn't well-received within the community. The VC glitch definitely caused the most controversy, and the arguments never ended as to whether or not it should've been banned until finally it was banned 2 years later.

My only disagreement with players is the statement that character balance is superior in SC2. I found SC2 Xianghua and Mitsu to be crazier than SC3 Xianghua and Sophitia. In terms of low tiers, SC2 Yun didn't feel outright better than SC3 Rock just because of Rock's ring out game.

As far as single player, SCIV is easily the worst in the series (by a disturbingly far margin). Gameplay wise IV is on par with SC2 in my opinion as I enjoy both (However I do admit that I prefer Broken Destiny over IV where the balancing issues are fixed.) Overall, SC2's package is much more impressive than what SCIV offered so I tip the scale to Soul Calibur 2.
