Soul Calibur 5 Guest/Bonus/CAS Character Discussion

Excuse me, you can't just ban guest because are guest?
I mean SW space trash wasn't banned from SC4 tourneys?

Oh, but I can sir. I can and will if the guests are console exclusive.

Fun Fact: In SC2, Link/Spawn/Heihachi were banned because they were console exclusive. Why? Because people on other systems had no means to practice against them, thus creating an unfair advantage. Kratos is banned in MK9 because he is PS3 exclusive for the same reason. In the beginning of SC4, Vader and Yoda were banned until they became available for both systems; again, for the same reason- Console exclusivity.

So, if the guests are console specific, they WILL be banned by any legitimate organizer.
It also just so happens that I am among the major organizers

Even beyond that, in many places in Europe guests are banned from tournament play regardless of console exclusivity or not. France for example, banned SW/Algol for "not fitting with the SC motif". They even went so far as to disallow SW stages. It is worth noting that France is the de-facto strongest SC community as well- this isn't just some locals doing it.

Tournaments and competitive play don't apply to most people in this thread, but for those that it DOES, this is a legitimate issue.

IIRC, I think Vader and Yoda were banned before they were available on both consoles.

French community took purging SW from SC (... or the other way around, damn you know what I mean) a bit further, by banning all three characters AND SW stages.

edit. Idle already answered more throughly, disregard this.

Lol

-Banned!
-Why? They're no more console exclusive!
-I don't care mon ami, do not want that space shit in my SC

Being italian is not easy to say,but
FRANCE WIN :D

Ugh please no anime based guest characters. I have enough seeing ppl creating anime chars in SC4. They have their own place.

Going to topic, I've read some pages and haven't seen anyone suggested "Tales of" characters. Its easier to get since they're both Namco games and Some of the moves can fit in SC.

Daishi-san said, we have deals with "OTHER" company so I don't think it'll be "Tales of" characters. But nothing is imposible.

GATTSU must be in (I don't think fire emblem that chance now i just thought about it)

I know my friend,Gatsu will be the best Guest ever also if he will not add so much to the game

I will just be happy having decent editor to make him with

good editor + Sieg style + Requiem = badass Gatsu (or Gattsu or Guts, it depend where you are)

On SC4 i have great Gatsu (Sieg style), Grifis (Raph style), Zodd (Night style) and Shilat (Voldo style)

Hail to berserk fan :) what we only need to make a perfect Gattsu is one thing the "Hair" just give us gatsu hair style ingame.

Why hope that they are console exclusive? I in fact hope the opposite is true. Regardless of whether or not they are namcos attempt at attracting new crowds to the soul calibur scene doesn't mean they can't be perfectly valid characters.

Now I'd prefer it if there were no 'Guest Characters' and instead have them all be main characters.

Granted if I had to choose I'd be stuck because Namco hates the people who make dynasty warriors even if they would be a perfect fit. :(

The honest and simple answer? Most tournament players hate the idea of looking at what is essentially a marketing stamp on the game in tournament/competitive play. Everytime a Star Wars stage came up in SC4, I groaned, audibly, and many others did too. Even the bonus characters who were clones were borrowed from manga, and also made us groan.

We accept that Namco wants them $ and casual fans will pay it for guests. We as the tournament community simply want to not have to deal with it, and console exclusivity is the easiest justification for those kinds of bans. It also free's up Namco to make the guests as ridiculously out of place or broken as they want, because their balance isn't even an issue; as they would never see the light of day in tournament. I think it's a win/win.

If your not a tournament/competitive player this really doesn't affect you at all; this is simply the hope of that sub-sect of the fanbase. Also, this is 8wr, the hub of the SC competitive community; this point of view is actually pretty common.

Why dislike what keeps your game afloat. I Won't dispute that these guest characters were a bit lackluster and completely random, but These characters are part of the reason the game is still thriving and attaining new fans.

I didn't like any of those though. The bonus characters didn't even look that decent and to have the same fighting style is just lazy.

But I'd rather have respectable guest characters that are excepted in all forms of play, then ridiculous over the top over powered/ weak characters that torture the casual.
I doubt these characters are just going to go away, so what we should do is hope for the best and suggest it, as opposed to just hope they are console exclusive because as you saw in soul calibur 4, the did away with that pretty quickly.

My answer:
  1. They aren't genuine characters of Soul Calibur.
  2. It just shows that guest characters have a more powerful presence than SC characters.
  3. The majority of the audience milked into guest characters could careless about the original cast nor the game itself.
A perhaps trivia point you may bring up is Yoshimitsu. Yoshi originally derived from the Tekken series who also made debut in the second installment of Soul Calibur (talking about the DreamCast version). Assuming from that time Yoshi was considered a guest character; however, Yoshi continues to be part of the SC series so I guess he got more accepted by traditional community members of SC.

The problem with guest characters in the way they tie in with SC is that it's usually a one time deal. Like in SC2 you have 3 console exclusive characters which no longer exist in next iteration then; in SC4 you have Star Wars which I believe are likely to disappear on the next iteration. Cuz it's a one time deal, the fans you gain for the time being will be lost thus gaining a new fan base for a new guest character only to happen the same way as from the previous.

Unless the guest character has strong ties with Soul Calibur as Yoshi did then maybe that guest character will eventually get more acceptance upon the next couple of iterations. I still don't know if ppl in this community still consider Yoshi to be a guest character, but nonetheless he's accepted in tournaments as a legal character.

im willing to bet all the people who play calibur for guests won't ever show up to tourneys so...........yeah I don't mind banning them its not a net loss for us either

What's with the hate with guest characters?
It's not like they're gonna be in every SC game.
I personally think guests are a nice bonus.
Besides:
Soul blade was the beginning. No guests.
Soul Calibur added my boy Yoshi, Asta, Xianghua, Kilik, Maxi, and Lizzy. No guests.
Soul Calibur 2 added Cass, Talim, and Ivy. Link(GC), Spawn(X-box), Heihachi(PS2)
Soul Calibur 3 added Sets, Tira, and Zas. No guests unless you count CAS.
Soul Calibur 4 added Algol, Hilde, and Damp(only for BD). Yoda and Vader.
:sc1yos1:Soul Calibur 2 and 4 are the only two games with guests from other games.:sc1yos1:

3 has Kos-Mos (Xenosaga) pretty transparently available as part of CAS (she's the source of the type x items.).

For guests, there's one very very unlikely one I'd love to see.

Pratty from Summon Night: Swordcraft Story (From what I've read, with Flightplan's death, Banpresto now owns the Summon Night series, and Namco Bandai fully owns Banpresto, not that it really matters with such a long-shot)

Why?

gfs_76664_2_48_mid.jpg

I'm surprised there hasn't been any yuri in such a fanservice focused fighter (and no, that line isn't just an advertising gimmick,it's actually one of the tamer bits out of Pratty and Sugar and the game in general). Also, there is great moveset potential (she fights with swords, axes, lances, knuckles and drills, switching between them mid-battle).

As for who I expect? Link (and possibly a Fire Emblem character) for a version on the Nintendo console that will be revealed at E3 is 99.9% if such a version happens. An AC Assassin wouldn't be a shock (Works in the timeline, decent fighting style, the property has heavy exploitation promotion by Ubisoft). A Castlevania character would work well (Whip would be originalish), most likely Simon (Star power, uses a whip) Alucard (Star power, can avoid needing time-line screws to fit in) or Soleiyu (Very obscure, but would be the active Belmont in the time of SC5, plus he is a relatively blank slate moveset wise and could "steal" moves from any member of the clan without seeming odd). Heihachi returning isn't impossible either.

I could see her as some good CAS parts for "dress up calibur", but not as a guest character. In any case, welcome to 8way. Pocky Yoshi welcomes you with a like.

I don't like guest characters that much because their styles don't continue over into the next game. I would like to see Necrid make a return to Soul Calibur or even another Tekken character as a guest if guest characters are going to be in the game. I just think thats better than stupid Master Chief or DBZ or other dumb s***.
