Commentary

Another thing we need to do is focus on key players. A weird phenomenon where we have fighting game celebrities now, and while we know our top community members, the world doesn't. Tom Brady was a nobody till MK despite his history with DOA, but now he is highlighted and people tune in. We need to make sure the commentary also helps sell the players. Right now if you hopped on our site as a new player, you don't have any idea who our Justin Wong and Daigo are so no one knows who they should be watching.
I know Oofmatic is good, and I've ran into a few other excellent players online but can't remember their names. Who do we got?

I hate to stroke his ego, but KDZ was wildly entertaining to watch when he gets hype. OOFMATIC can be at times as well. Ramon, Dreamkiller are also very loud boisterous guys. Just off the top of my head.

Ramon is the bestest! Ramon, watch Ramon!

And I agree with you wholeheartedly, Idle.

And I didn't really say anything at FSAK. It was mostly because I'm like, yeah I'm a new guy and I just kinda came and took the mic and sat next to Bibulus without knowing what the hell was going on. XD

I honestly think the best commentary is with a two person team... the "smart" person, and the "idiot". You can see this type of commentary in many sports, professional poker the most. While a lot of "soul calibur veterans" hated ChaCha's commentary from EVO2K9, I thought it was great. Yes, he did go into explaining basic stuff, but thats what you need to keep things interesting, especially in a situation where the majority of people watching matches are NOT "soul calibur veterans".

You had one person who didn't really know anything about Soul Calibur, and then you had another who was explaining all the technical stuff, and why things work and don't work at a very basic level. Basically, the "idiot" was there to ask questions, and give the "smart" person a chance to explain. At the Break Weekly tournaments, this is almost what we have. MrQuotes tends to call moves and stuff as they happen (and sometimes before, he's pretty telepathic), while MarlinPie explains some of the more technical stuff.

The stream monsters at FSAK liked my commentary. Who's validated and loved? Yea baby!

Not to burst your bubble, Miko -- actually screw that it IS to burst your bubble. <3 you know I love you still -- but that's not saying much. - They liked me too, and I was pretty terrible. I remember when jaxel was like, "Bibulus, Dest, they keep commenting on how much they like you guys!" etc. I'd never done commentary before, and going back over those matches, I don't think I did a great job at all. :P But yeah, Bib's pretty good at keeping on topic.

i do really like Mr. Quotes/MarlinPie commentary team. they keep it mildly funny while still insightful and informative, which is a good and tricky balance to maintain.

as far as Soul Calibur goes, i'm perfectly fine with listening to Malice scream shit ("with da BOOTY!"). that's one of my favorite parts of watching any of Jaxel's SC vids. i think if we had Malice to keep shit funny and someone else to keep shit smart (like the malice/bibulous combo), it'd be okay. people who can stay hype without being annoying and remain good commentators.

The best commentary I think, is commentary made by the players themselves, commentary that players like Idlemind, Ramon, or HRD make while playing. I've never seen a "proper recording" with player commentary and shitty video cameras can make the match difficult to see what's going on. I'd like to see recordings with audio from in and out of game and have the video recorded directly from the source.

Funny part is, I took a voice over class in college cause I thought I wanted to go into radio. But took business instead.

Id volunteer to be the idiot. Jaxel's got it bout right, you should always have your nerd and your comedy relief. My in game commentary on myself is good times!

Can you really commentate SC? I don't think so. You have to slow down pause the game and talk about the specific mind games that might be going.
Play by play for SC does it a disservice in my opinion.

Would be interesting to get videos with post match commentary. Especially if it were from the players themselves. Even if I don't like or play the games I enjoy watching those kind of analysis videos.

When it comes to live commentary I just respect the people who try it. Doing it well seems like one hell of a daunting task.

Just spit balling an idea here, maybe we should have try outs for post match commentary? Setup a couple of matches, and have people submit their commentary to whomever will decide who the new "Voices" of the SC community will be?

And I agree 100% with IFB, we need to establish our Wong and Daigo and anyone else that is the top guys. Make it official!

This works pretty well, for us in Australia anyway. It was more for fun than it was to make the game popular. This was during Nationals, I acted like the idiot commentator while Engared supplied the more knowledgable talk. We all enjoyed it, which was what mattered most to us, might actually be worthwhile with some refinement.

The commentary at Cannes this year was fucking funny - honestly, if you have a basic understanding of French it's the funniest thing in the world.
