Soul Calibur 5 Guest/Bonus/CAS Character Discussion

lol, I can probably see Ezio since he can probably take on Dampierre's moveset (who probably won't be in SCV anyway), but without the obvious ridicule.

But since we're talking guest characters (with a plural s), I'll gladly take Lightning or Bayonetta.

Ezio for teh simple epic win
assassinscreed2mainch.jpg

He will fit
He's cool
He can bring in an interessing style
He's from a recent popular (multi-console) series
He's italian like me
He' from the same period and the same place (Renaissance-Real World)
He can be the excuse to give me back my fucking Venice stage
He have not bullshit powers
He's a rara example of western cool chara design
He fuck the daughter of somebody in first 5 minutes of his virtual existence
He try to save my country http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/_...edia/images/2/2d/Ezio_Auditore_Berlusconi.jpg

While I was originally against Guest Characters (ESP. during SCII era), they will be in the game if for nothing else to raise brand awareness and most importantly rack in some extra cash, after all like anything else the point is to make money. At this point I said my possible picks, however tbh I don't really care because regardless of who it is I know their purpose and if he/she/(it?) will bring more people to/back to SC, then I'm" all for it quite frankly.

SC isn't really setting the world on fire to my knowledge (especially after the atrocity that was SCIV), so I think this game is more about bringing the series back to prominence and better way than to throw a flavor of the month character on SC to have casuals going out buying the game while still appealing to more competitive players. At least that's my take on it.

Wow, So many people are pitching FF and AC, (And those character would be just as awkward as SW) yet nobody seems to bring up Devil May Cry?

Dante and Vergil easily fit into the game.

Vergil uses Yamato (A Katana) And Dante uses a Longsword. You can give them Devil trigger if you want but it's obvious these two characters would make the most sense.

And wasn't Dante going to appear in SCIII But got cut?

Honestly, who DOESN'T want our two loveable Demon Slayers as playable characters.

I don't. I can't be the only one who doesn't.

On a side note, Lightning would be a terrible, terrible guest character.

Ezio and/or a Belmont (not Alucard) from Castlevania is all I want. Either that or no guests.

-Idle

I agree with IdleMind with not wanting Devil May Cry or Final Fantasy characters. It's waaay too predictable. Now if they brought in
Hibiki Takane I would be happy. Setsuka is the closes thing they have to her so far.

Because they're busy rebooting the franchise, so if they put Dante in the game it would look like this:
mug-shot-dante.jpg

Plus although I thought Dante would be a good idea several years ago, I've since come to realize that if he can't juggle with guns he's not truly Dante.

OT
Good news, recently they said that two japanese capcom designers (Echiro and Itsuma) are going to fix that shit
ps: Dante was really near to be the guest in SC3,but is end up in nothing

Would be nice if they would put in blazblue characters.. Litchi, jin or ragna. Though i think its hard to put them in properly cause of the way they play unless they remove their uniqueness..
Though BB is prolly wishfull thinking. Guest are supposed to attract 'non fighting game playing' ppl. Won't reach out to em by putting these in. I have a feeling it might be lord of the rings characters (though i hope not but.. just a feeling)

I think some of us are just figuring out what makes sense from the marketing point of view. For example, they are not putting Commander Keen in the game, because he hasn't had a game since forever and will not have one in 2012 and he wouldn't draw sales.
FF13-2 version of Lighting would make a bit sense, she has a sword, shield and an armor, FF is a known brand and there's a game coming out in 2012 (although I feel like the January release date for FF13-2 is too early, so I don't think it's her). Assassin's Creed character makes sense if there's a AC game or movie coming out next year. There are other games too like Ninja Gaiden 3 (Tecmo has its own fighting game series so I don't think it's Ryu), freaking Tomb Raider, DMC, Bioshock, MGS Rising, some Dragon Age game, World of Warcraft expansion, whatever etc. And the guest doesn't have to come from a game franchise, it can come from a movie, comic, TV series, book (put a fucking Sandor Clegane in there, Namco) etc.

I think this has been analyzed pretty thoroughly by now.
  • In terms of what “fits” stylistically/historically/design-wise (and as we all know from Star Wars, guests may not actually make sense), Ezio is easily the obvious choice. He’s also massively popular and has a new game coming out. So he really fulfills all the top requirements for a guest. Speaking personally, he’s as close as I’ve seen to a guest suggestion that I would actually like (as opposed to merely find humorously tolerable, or downright wrong). I would welcome a better idea but nobody has so suggested one yet.
  • Lightning also seems* a good choice simply because her XIII-2 incarnation looks close enough to SC design paradigms and is equipped appropriately, plus FF games in general make it... well, relatively easy for characters to pop in and out of timestreams/dimensions (they’ve done the same thing intra-series multiple times). And again, game coming out in roughly correct timeframe, huge audience.
*(I’m not sure why Idle thinks Lightning is such a horrifying choice, but then again I haven’t actually played FFXIII and don’t really know anything at all about the plot or character. I’ve heard that (for once!) she’s actually supposed to be a bit of a no-nonsense persona, not as much FF BS philosophy... but that is really loose hearsay. I suspect people will rapidly disabuse me of my misconceptions on this one.) Idle, do you just hate FF on principle? Or is something about Lightning’s design or character specifically distasteful?
  • Dante would be dumb. Too modern/supernatural IMHO. He has a sword... so what? So do tons of other characters. He just doesn’t look SC to me. To be honest I’m not sure why I think he’d be a bad choice, I just... the thought leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Not compelling argument I know.
  • Ryu is awesome in NG, but 1) already in a FG franchise, and 2) actually very generic in terms of character design (so he’s popular, but putting him on the SC cover wouldn’t elicit the whole “oh wow look who they put in SC!” marketing message). I would find it pretty cool if they game him his sword, kunai, and kusarigama, turned him into a sort of male cross between Ivy, Mitsu, and Taki. New game coming out too. But again, very unlikely b/c of points 1 and to a lesser extent 2. *(also, cool 2p idea - maskless Ryu.)
  • A Belmont is an idea I can get behind. Even though the timeframe might be off depending on whom you are talking about, the weapon selection, character design, popularity, etc. are all lining up pretty well. Not a blockbuster choice though so I’m predicting “no.”
  • SONIC!? WTF is wrong with whoever suggested Sonic? The idea is so far beyond laughable it isn’t even funny. A small cartoon anthropomorphic hedgehog with super speed, no weapons, and sticks for arms / legs. Why not Mario while you’re at it? Or Pikachu? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I loved Sonic 2, 3, & Knuckles but we’re talking about oil and water here. This isn’t Smash Brothers. Smash brothers is a fun game, but... listen, if I have to explain this to you, you’re probably not sane enough to get anyway, so I’ll stop trying.
  • Crossovers from other fighting games such as BB don’t help draw in the non-FG masses (most FG fans will buy SC or not regardless of guests). I don’t have serious complaints about BB characters but neither am I ecstatic about them either. And seriously, Samurai Showdown &c.? The point of a guest is to be current-blockbuster / mainstream-recognizable, not FG-nostalgic. Even if I like the character designs for SS.
Here’s the thing... there are only so many very popular games being released late this year or next year whose iconic characters are 1) humanoid, 2) use melee weapons, and 3) are remotely similar in tone to SC. I think we’ve more or less looked at all of them, right? We’re not exactly looking at Commander Shepard, Master Chief, or Gordon Freeman here. Or even Lara Croft.

In the meantime, if Project Soul pulls a surprise on us and we get some left-field character... well, at least then we can all have a merry time arguing about how stupid/brilliant the decision is.

Dang, you pretty much efficiently said all of what I was busy writing a wall of text about. Especially the books/comics/TV/etc. suggestion, which vastly opens up the options.

Game of Thrones... even though it’s not “real world,” an interesting choice (but not very high on my list to be honest, I just don’t think the visual character recognition is there). Also made me think of Wheel of Time characters, which I don’t really see happening.

Hm... what other media is out there? BRB.

That picture makes me giggle every time.

Considering I have heard DMC3's mechanics were based on the Alpha series of Street Fighter I think he is a lot better off in 2-D fighters. Putting him in SC wouldn't work and would just be pointless wankery. Besides extreme casual DMC fans are arguably even more insane than a lot of FF fans. They take the rule of cool characters and fetishize them to a point where it is idol worship. Oh little known fact, Nighty's 2p weapon in SC3 was originally going to be the Sparda sword for Dante until the deal fell though.

Good post,kudos dude

Only i don't agree about Lightning (wich you too are careful),for the simple reasons that if FF must be they have waaaay better options than her, both if they search pure $$$ (Sephiroth/Cloud as obvious choice) or if they search something that fit (so many secondary or even minor characters will be cooler than her in SC)

Only reason can be push FF13-2,but in that case we must think that in this game she's not her the protagonist, but is this wierdo kid

I think that the bonus characters should actually be realated to the game, and not just some random people that they made up. For example, Algol was "sealed away" by these group of mages. I feel like the group of Mages that sealed Algol away should have been the bonus characters. Not people with real characters fighting styles.

They should do it like how they did the bonus characters in the third game. They had characters that were in the game,(From chronicles of the sword) or if they weren't in the game, they realated to the charters ( Amy, Arthur: The guy that replaced Mitsurugi in certain european countries, etc)
