For me, atheism makes this existence more precious because it's fleeting. This may be it. So, there's more of a sense of urgency. I'm not promised an eternity or a purpose. So, I have to find my own purpose and make this existence count. If there is a God, who's to say he/she/it is any religion? If there is only a Christian God, then people like Ghandi are burning in hell for eternity while people like Hitler could conceivably be in heaven. Same rationale works behind all religions. Believe this or suffer the consequences regardless of how good you are. I don't buy it.

First of all God does exist, second of all Jesus does exist and thirdly human life is nothing, we are basically just insects living with a conscious on this planet.

You *DO* realize that by coming into a thread about the less-spiritual beliefs and proclaiming your personal, opposing beliefs as inrrefutable truth that you're really just giving all people of faith a bad name...right? 'Cuz I mean, if the other people that have the same beliefs are you are that dim...

And no, don't come back saying you didn't understand what you were saying. You did, that's why you said it. How's that for irrefutable truth?

As long as people stick from bashing religions, I see no problems.

The only thing keeping me from becoming atheist myself is the question of creation. How did all of this start? Even if we go with the big bang theory and say that everything started from a singularity point, well where did that point come from? It keeps coming back to the fact that something started this whole universe...and it must be a god of some sort.

It goes both ways doesn't it? How did God start? How did what started God start? How did the Big Bang start? How did what started the Big Bang start? All legitimate questions.

To Christians

1. How do YOU know that god exists? Have you actually seen him?
2. Look at all the other religions in the world. Why is yours considered the right one? Each religion contradicts the next, so Christianity is just as feeble in truth as the others
3. Christians die exactly like people who don't believe in god. It's the human race that makes miracles not god e.g. I.e. the notion of medicine to cure human illnesses. Definitely not god's work but the work of the human mind.
4. The bible is COMPLETELY unjustified. So how can you prove that anything in it is true?

Belief is a failure of logic. If you believe there is or is not a flying spaghetti monster or an invisible man in the sky, it's confirmation bias. The way the mind works, it's impossible to believe anything you know is false. Whatever you believe is true because you believe it. This goes for the entirety of humanity, none of us are exempt from this failure of logic because what's the alternative? There is none. Without a belief that you're doing the right thing, why would you ever move? Eat food? Belief is a primal instinct that is essentially impossible to discard, I think. Of course I'm right because I believe I'm right. Just like everyone else in the world.

Asking those questions(referring to Seraphim Jester's) is moot and they're not worth answering, I believe. And since I believe it, it must be true.

"I believe. And since I believe it, it must be true."

That's an incredibly tenacious remark. Believing in something that hasn't been corroborated by any concrete facts or evidence seems more like blind faith to me rather than faith. This whole concept of make-believe is just a euphemism for disillusionment, and dissociating from reality in my eyes.

It doesn't seem remotely logical from my perspective but I guess we're all entitled to our own opinions.

Proof #20 - Notice your church
Here are six important statements about wealth from the Bible:
Matthew 6:19

  • Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Luke 14:33

  • Any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.
Matthew 6:24

  • No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and Money.
Matthew 19:21

  • Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."
Hebrews 13:5

  • Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."
Phil 2:3

  • Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.
Acts 2:44-45

  • All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.
Now, the next time you go to church, look at the building. At any "normal" church in America, the church building is an immense structure worth significant amounts of money. Here is a typical church in Raleigh, NC:
Colonial Baptist Church
The church's web site has this to say: "In May of 1993 the church fellowship voted unanimously to relocate our church campus. As a result of God's gracious plan, our Tryon site almost immediately became inadequate to facilitate our growing numbers. Thus, the church body once again demonstrated its pioneering spirit, faith and vision—vision to be a church not only blessed with a wonderful past, but faith and trust in God for an enduring, effective future. As of May 21, 1996, we became the owners of 33 acres on which to build our new facilities. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!" This church has soccer fields, indoor basketball courts, dozens of meeting rooms and classrooms, several buses, a library, a huge sanctuary and ample free parking.
[One obvious question to ask after reading the church's statement is this: If all blessings flow from God, then why are his blessings so amazingly unbalanced? Why are tens of thousands of children dying of starvation every day on this planet [ref], while Colonial Baptist Church is blessed with such wealth? Why wouldn't God spread his blessings evenly among all his children? Answer: Because God is imaginary.]
If you look at this article you see this description of the Catholic Church: "The Vatican's treasure of solid gold has been estimated by the United Nations World Magazine to amount to several billion dollars. A large bulk of this is stored in gold ingots with the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, while banks in England and Switzerland hold the rest. But this is just a small portion of the wealth of the Vatican, which in the U.S. alone, is greater than that of the five wealthiest giant corporations of the country. When to that is added all the real estate, property, stocks and shares abroad, then the staggering accumulation of the wealth of the Catholic church becomes so formidable as to defy any rational assessment."
The contradiction is startling. No where in Jesus' teachings is it suggested that Christians should buy land and build church buildings with indoor basketball courts. No where does Jesus suggest the accumulation of billions of dollars in gold bars. Chistians are supposed to sell everything and give the money to the poor, according to Jesus. Yet church congregations do exactly the opposite on a regular basis. Building a large sanctuary and indoor basketball courts is an exercise in vanity, ego-boosting, selfishness and human pride. These attributes are the opposite of Jesus' prescriptions and everyone knows it.
Church congregations regularly and willfully ignore Jesus' teachings because they know that Jesus is imaginary.

JUST WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT THE POINT OF ANY BELIEF IS ABOUT FAITH, NOT LOGIC.

SOMETIMES PEOPLE ASK WHY THE FAITHFUL BELIEVE IN SOMETHING, AS IF IT MUST BE COMPELLING, BUT OF COURSE THAT'S NOT THE CASE. THEY BELIEVE BECAUSE THEY CAN'T DEAL WITH SIMPLY NOT KNOWING. OR THEY NEED COMFORT. WHO THE FUCK KNOWS. WHO CARES. MAKING AN ASSUMPTION JUST TO FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF IS SILLY. BUT IT'S HARMLESS UNLESS THEY IMPOSE LAWS ON OTHERS.

Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't mean "I believe" in that sense. I meant it in the sense that I literally believe what I'm saying xD

I think you missed my point, though. As long as belief is a failure of logic, believing that something is true is no more or less an error than believing something is false. It's a failure of logic either way you go because when you really, *REALLY* break it down belief is nothing more than confirmation bias. Makes sense, right?

I think the reason belief is such a touchy issue is because of it being a based on a bias. And yeah, like I said I don't think we could actually survive without these biases but at the same time wouldn't it be better to recognize it? I don't think it's feasible to overcome all bias(at least that's what I'm telling myself), but if we can be open-minded enough to not let bias lead us into conflict over belief things should be better right?

Then, what's it really matter anyways? At the end of the day, people are just people. As long as they're not being a dick about it or running around killing people in the name of their beliefs, what difference does it really matter what they believe? You think you're just as right as I or anyone else does. Your beliefs aren't better than anyone else's, you just believe they are like everyone else since belief itself is a failure of logic.

Oh, and just for fun: analogy time! Pushing for atheism as being 'more correct' than anything else is the same as proselytisers for religion. Don't you think Jehovah's Witnesses and all those other door-to-door religion 'salesmen' are very tacky things? You're pretty much doing the same thing here. And chances are, just like Jehovah's Witnesses, no one's going to be buying what you're selling.

Your beliefs aren't better than anyone else's
WHAT?!

JUST BECAUSE A BELIEF IS VULNERABLE TO BEING WRONG, DOESN’T MEAN THAT DIFFERENT BELIEFS ARE EQUALLY AS VALID.

WHO IS MORE LIKELY TO HAVE THEIR BELIEFS ABOUT PHYSICS COME TO FRUITION? A PHYSICIST? OR A BUM ON THE STREET? OBVIOUSLY THE PHYSICIST WILL HAVE A BETTER TRACK RECORD. HIS BELIEFS ARE BETTER.

RETARDS.

I have a question~ I hope it can be answered...and I hope you all are not offended.

-Why did you people decide to become an Atheist/Agnostic/Theist?
-If you found out God was real when you died, what would you do?
-Do you hate God/Jesus, or against the whole corrupt idea of religion?
- Do you hate/dislike people who have a belief in God?
-Lastly, what do you think of Jesus?

Just to let you all know Im not trying to provoke! Im just curious in your responses. I hope Im not offending in any way and if you perfer not to answer I will respect that. m(_ _ m)

Well This is my opinion till Science proves that God doesn't exist completely than God is the creator and this God particle discovery is great but it only explains where mass may come from, we still have gravity which can't be explained plus the biggest mystery of all how the universe was created.

Well this subject is equal both side...either your waiting for science to prove it or that God proves his existence :)

So I get that you guys really dislike the Church and in that point we are in agreement, but what do you think about the Bible itself?

Look at what you all did. You set another thread on fire... NO NO! DEFINITELY A NO NO!

I have a question~ I hope it can be answered...and I hope you all are not offended.

-Why did you people decide to become an Atheist/Agnostic/Theist?

Well I was born a catholic but religion never meant anything for me. And later on in I became atheist, I used to think that science could answer everything and that religion was just a way to keep people on control. But after my first year in biology, I was surprised that evolution basically dosen't answer anything because there's a major flaw in the entire theory. If we came from the simplest life form, basic bacteries 500 genes in average and humans have over 33000 genes how did this occur. Well most people say mutation but mutation changes an existing gene it dosent add one. Well after that sad discovery, I started reading the bible. The old testament was a joke but the new one was interesting.

-If you found out God was real when you died, what would you do?

Well I believe in God so no worries, i don't lose anything if I die.

-Do you hate God/Jesus, or against the whole corrupt idea of religion?
Well in my opinion, religion institution that came from man shouldn't be associated with the faith itself, this is why I dont attend church myself. Jehovah witnessess, Mormons and all the Christians in thoses churches should sit down and read the bible because a lot of stuff they are doing are just not what Jesus had preached...

- Do you hate/dislike people who have a belief in God?
Well I don't hate any religion because if I was brought by a Muslim family, I would probably a die hard Muslim, same goes for all religion.
-Lastly, what do you think of Jesus?

For me Jesus is God. God who made himself human.

Just to let you all know Im not trying to provoke! Im just curious in your responses. I hope Im not offending in any way and if you perfer not to answer I will respect that. m(_ _ m)

well sorry for my English , I'm on my phone, I love listening to atheist, their views of life is always interesting :) I'm also glad we can keep this civilized :)
