Maxi Match-up Discussion

Woke up this morning and hit the lab. Feelin a lot better bout the match up now
Reaves idea of punishing 6BB with WSB+K is genious. I QS the 2nd B and can punish with what i want. 6A+B seems more reliable.

Dem kicks tho. Jeezus. I space him at mid range to stay away from dem K's! They scare me.
Stay there and punish any reckless Crossbows. I just tried that and it worked wonders. The Ezio player was scary+I really don't know how to deal with his close range game too.

So how do I as an Ezio player fight Maxi? If you guys want to ask me about Anti-Ezio I'll answer.

I wish I could help you but idk two shits about Ezio. Best advice I can give you is don't shoot crossbows from mid range because that is 70-80 points of your health gone.

wasn't sure whether to post this in general discussion or here so yeah: what do i do against hyper-punishment playstyles in general? i know to use less unsafe moves, obviously but i'm not entirely sure how to fight someone who knows maxi in-n-out

I play against a friend of mine very regularly who mains Pyrrah, and after playing for months he's gotten very good at punishing Maxi, JGing all the basic strings, all that. What you sort of have to do is be patient and play a whiff punishment/punishment game of your own and scale back the aggressiveness. Even if you get predictable with safe pokes (say on wake-up) that mess will just get JG and you'll get his with a disproportionate amount of damage in return.

Basically unpredictability and whiff punishment are your friend. You can get away with certain mix-ups, especially ones that are a little more unconventional than 1B mix-ups. Try things like 4B and mixing that with LO B and LO K and see how they react. If they always JG something like 1B RO AK (rather than ducking) just stop the move and grab them. Grabs seem to be your best friend against people too focused on JGing.

Generally I tend to have the best luck when I space them out and force them to try to close. They don't have a lot of options other than run straight at you no matter how they try to dress it up.

My recommendation would be to counter this by basing your game on deception and timing. Base your game on 4b+k cancels, I started using it for the same reason you are having problems, your opponent can read Maxi. The flames are good for reducing that. I basically mix this up with three main components. Throws, 6a+b and pokes. If you stand in front of him and 4b+k cancel into 6a+b, JG can go frack itself, or throw, or step. Regarding the timing thing, there was an article about it on 8wayrun: Rhythm: The Death Drum. When you often flame cancel this becomes a stronger tactic. When your opponent is JG alot it means he is standing there looking for the hit. Pro players read so much, use this against them. Waiting for a long time before doing 6a+b is a classic counter fishing game that works against pro's. If they start getting the picture and poke you quickly, then just adjust and dont wait to long. In the end your strategy is safe, you can turtle and fish for counters while they feel they have to do something. Again, you have to implement flame cancel into your movement and aspects of your game for this to work in a cool way.

On a side note, I do use other moves, but they are situational.

What's been working well for me are things like aG cancels and stuff like that too. When people see that twitch and hear that "hee yah!!" they just freeze up long enough to punish them for it. Just taking from my experience a few days ago where we played in a lobby for about 6 hours straight and I learned a lot. Just a lot of crouching moves, a lot of 1K and FC 3As and you can basically get free 236K~1K for like 79 whatever damage and huge meter gain. I even skipped the 1K and got him to duck low thinking he could block it and hit him with a 44B right after that which is pretty much a free round if you can pull that off.

I'm also really surprised how well Maxi can make a comeback. His damage output is still really high. It's sort of like playing against Asta. You can be winning the whole round but that can all change in just 1-2 wrong guesses.

I am trying to get that 236k into my punish game since it tech crouches and for step punishes. It not easy, I have 6a+b in my muscle memory now but 236k, 2kb is 90 damage without meter. Wuw, If you could have 236k in your muscle memory = bad ass!

I would say that 4b+k cancel is much better because it has more visual things happening. You can flame cancel and run towards your enemy, the flames follow you. Just better.. :)

You can also comb your hair with fire if you do b+kG K+G
You can also freeze frame the fire with his CE which is equals parts badass.

Something I like to do to change up my rhythm is 4B+Kg, 2G, 2G, WsB+K/6A+B/FC 3AAA. Depending on how mindfucked I have an opponent depends on how many times I teabag or don't.

If you play against somebody who knows Maxi flame haircombing into 6a might work for fishing out some nice wall splats.

Cervantes is a pain in my ass. That back step is too damn much, and limits me from reaching his fuckin' ass. What do you guys do to combat a boring backstepper? Or just in general, what do you guys do to beat this guy?

You either have to anticipate the backstep and 66B/A/K or just close the distance every time he backsteps to avoid counter hits.

Punish aB with 6A+B BE, LI A whenever you can.

Can't. The push is too far. I can't even auto GI because the A comes out first. I hate playing this fucker. I've handled the backstep 6B on command now however aB is a pain. Also, that downstab with an A follow up with a BE gun attack. Is it sidesteppable?

No you can punish it most of the time with the BE version. You may drop short a lot with regular version. That shit is hardly steppable btw. Cervy is a pain for everyone.

Against backdashers the principle is always the same. Step and press forward like a bitch and control the arena as best as you can

im sure it's been covered before but how do i poop on rugi?

so far i try to anticipate a stance transition or a 4B so i can 4A+B him. 6A+B punishes a 66BB but im not sure if 6A+B interrupts it ( hits between the Bs). other than that i have problems w/ 3B spam.
