Lot of thoughts:
When the SOUL CALIBUR logo turned red, I was thinking OMG they're revealing a guest character (despite gifting us with FOUR reveals already).
Almost everyone's 2p colours look really cool. I'd rank them as X > NM > Groh > Kilik > Sophitia > Mitsurugi subjectively.
If I didn't mention it, it is likely because I think it is awesome. I'm probably posting things that concern me, because everything else is implied to be simply stunning.
Character specific:
1) Groh:
He doesn't look like a Soul Calibur character until you see him in action. Just a closeup of his outfit looks out of place: the fabric texture of his coat looks too modern and the materials of his eye patch / left arm armor look too high-fantasy and ends up looking like DLC CAS parts (and I mean that in a bad way).
His outfit sticks out more than Zwei/Viola but at least his weapon set and moveset look very fitting for SC.
Canon wise he doesn't seem like a malevolent character, and he functions as an agent working for some mysterious organization that it trying to accomplish a certain task.
I haven't seen gameplay so far (its not even past day 1) which would support his Necalli form being tied to his Soul Charge. Who gave him his 3 scars across his eye ? If it is Viola I'd be very surprised.
Notice the coupling for the 2 blades (at the center of the dual blades) is actually attached only to the light blade , which would suggest the dark blade is slightly shorter from hilt to blade tip.
Anyone notice his shoulder emblem ? A Royal lion (with a crown) and 3 swords ? We know Groh has 2.. so is there anything we are missing ?
I like both his JP and ENG voice.
2) Nightmare:
Wow. Visually the tattered cape really makes him look more menacing (kinda like how Megatron had a cape). How will this affect Zasalamel / Raphael, which are 2 characters that also had capes in their designs at one point?
Secondly, his helm is very SC1 esque, but the face plate looks aesthetically more pleasing and memorable.
You guys notice he has a dragon Motif now ? Check out the relief on the top sides of his helm and the shoulder pauldron.
I can't see any differences between SC1 Soul Edge and SC6 Soul Edge.
The dude summons a demonic shadow steed for his CE but if you look closely it is a actually a Unicorn! I wonder what will happen if the opponent has his back to a edge, will NM ring himself out or the opponent will magically slide to the middle of the stage.
His chest cuirass features a sharp point but it seems so low that it makes him look like he has a giant gut instead. His helm and Pauldron look a lot more polished, intricate and detailed, but oddly his chest cuirass looks so plain and ordinary (even more plain than SC1/SC2)! There is no eye carving, no monster jaw, ..etc.. it just is just a sharp point that juts out.
His moveset actually doesn't appear as brute-force powerful, considering the trailers show multi-hits before the opponent is finally flung away from the impact. Sometimes less is more. In his case, if you have someone with a giant monster arm swinging a man-sized cleaver and still requiring 4 slices (like after his 4B lethal hit on mitsurugi) before the victim is smashed away, then it actually makes him looks weaker rather than being mighty.
Almost every strike from Nightmare should be an all-in haymaker type as it fits his imposing and fearsome nature.
Lastly, his 6B multi-drill on CH does a SHIT TON of damage (like over 1/4) against Groh! His A+B explosion is actually RE-able too!
Lastly, his JP voice doesn't really jive with me.
3) Xianghua
Her RE animation looks like her old sidestep twirl aGI.
Does anyone know why her weapon wiggles during the character select screen when she poses?
Also it is interesting she is not directly next to Kilik in the select screen.
In the trailer her face has a rubbery/plastic texture to it. It is not a porcelain material, and it certainly doesn't emulate real skin (which would have pores/wrinkles that would diffuse light in a specific way) . Obviously her face sticks out the most (compared to her hands, arms and legs) since there is most attention there. Hopefully they spend more time polishing her facial appearance, something appears off and I can't quite describe it.
Why does she reference her mother during her CE (similar to Leixia). Maybe they came from a lineage of warrior women. I had to do a double take when she said "You can't stop me!!" because at first I thought she was being defiant to her own mother, but it appears she's saying that to her opponent.
I like how she doesn't even look backwards after delivering the final strike to the opponent (ala Alpha Pat / Setsuka)
4) Kilik
Kilik is the character where I find both his 1p and 2p colours to be close to equal in terms of attractiveness.
Aethstically, what is up with his sleeve ? It looks so strange, and if you see him in the 2p position you'll see what I mean.
The sound effect for when he strikes with his staff isn't very distinct from when he whiffs or is just twirling during neutral poses. It has the air-whiff noise but not the impact sound and audio is critical to helping players identify hit-confirms.
Ie:, if I close my eyes I can't actually tell if the opponent is struck until they make pain-grunt noises. This is most noticeable during his first A+B combo on mitsurugi.
He has the most tame looking CE out of the cast (a Phoenix screech like SC4 for the last hit would really help sell the impact).
Conversely, his Evil Seed Kilik has a move that looks like the entire stage is going to get blown up. I actually felt bad for Xianghua (thats the mother of his child in the future!) This attack is BY FAR the most cutscene-esque and I almost thought it was a single player story line-only , but the stage backdrop suggests otherwise (and it would suck to have a Kilik and a Evil Seed Kilik).
Why does Evil Seed Kilik summon fire when he grabs Xianghua?
Why does he heave energy tattoos / wild flowing hair (seems like visual tropes ala Necalli)
You'll notice his top clothing while he is staggering is still there, but after transformation it magically disappears. The trailer could, of course, not be continuous in terms of gameplay.
Overall, it has a been a GOOD day for soul calibur fans!
