I have to say, Groh would look way better without that stupid shoulder armor. It just seems pointless and forced. Simplicity really is key, sometimes.

I don't mind Groh Shoulder Armor tbh it looks cool on him imo, sor far at least, but i agree that simplicity is the best, i hated Kilik's SC4 design so much because of this lol

I said before but my theory is it's done to mirror Nightmare, as Groh (and Ivy who has similar designs with the gauntlet in V) seems to use some soul-Edge inspired power but is opposed to the evil sword.

Makes sense design-wise really. But I agree a little bit of a simpler design would've been nice.

This games shaping up to be fantastic so far. Honestly this looks like what we've been waiting for. I got to give it to the director and staff on the road there going with this. I see that there's passion and dedication involved, cant wait to see the finished product and my main man Cervy!!

So pleased Grø(h) is confirmed Nordic - ! Also fun fact - at the time of SC VI, Norway and Denmark were one kingdom, known as the Oldenburg Monarchy. Really interested to see where exactly he’s from (almost certainly somewhere in the Monarchy, as Sweden and Iceland don’t use the slashed o).

Gr0h sounds a lot like Crow. Wields a dual-edged sword. Methinks there's some inspiration here...

Aaaannnyway. I would not be surprised if ZWEI showed up, but I'm curious to see who else might make an appearance here and if there will be other brand new characters.

Of course, we're probably not going to get everyone back. I don't think Sieg, Tira, Hilda, or Cassandra will show up, but we'll see.

Random bit I noticed: Xianghua broke Siegmare's lower equipment (not that kind) and he kept his boots and pants. We saw Mitsurugi lose his entire pants too. Gave me a CAS thought about layers. I'm wishing shoes stay on and we just choose grieves or whatever. And pants but SCV at least let you keep those on.

Iffy on Sieg. The more tourney/hardcore crew would know better. Same with Cass and other derivatives. Thinking maybe Verge's informant might have seen concept art or something that led them to believe we'd get Sieg and Mare separate.

And of course X had to ruin her badass pose with that magical girl peace sign. It's cute on her at least but not your custom Hwang. That's just disturbing.

Let's go ahead and call Groh's dual blade stance DB. From what I can tell he has A, B, and K as options from this stance. DB A is the low hitting tornado spin, DB B is a mid-vertical that can be cut short to go back into DB, and DB K is a low sweep kick that leaves you in DB.

From what I've seen moves that cancel into DB don't appear to leave you at advantage on hit or block once you've entered the stance, then again a lot of these players don't seem to do a DB attack as early as possible, like in the first gif you can barely see him enter the stance but in the second he just kinda stands there for a few frames before doing the kick. These multi-hitting attacks like DB A and B might do really good chip damage in SC.

Also, am I the only one underwhelmed by SC? I know the gameplay we've seen so far is lemming quality, but the fact that you can't combo into it makes it seem like a waste of meter just to get some chip damage and like 3 new moves.
edit: there's also that mid horizontal that leads to a throw-like animation.

I am actually of the opposite opinion.

By having Groh's story origin be from Scandinavia (without any apparent cultural ties) you can almost certainly rule out any viking raider / berzerker / valkyrie type tropes which is a shame imo.

Then again you have several characters from the island of Japan, but its common knowledge this is a japanese developer so there's that.

While I don't know anything on that front yet, this game is apparently going to be retelling Soul Edge/Blade, II, and III along with SC1,
Sounds good. What is confusing to me is that, cannonically, SC4 is literally in the same year as SC3. Why wouldn't SC4 be included? I understand the plot of it involved NM / Sieg reaching full power and the introduction of Algol and maybe the Devs didn't want that.

I see your point (from a design point of view what you’ve listed is more iconic - vikings etc - and I’d be on board with it) . However that would make him as anachronistic as Sophitia, who don’t get me wrong is awesome, but her look references Ancient Greece, not Ottoman Greece.

I dunno, his eye-thing almost certainly qualifies as a Berserker-trope, even if it may be an Evil-Seed infection.

Besides, it's not like vikings wore those silly hats with horns anyway.

From what I've seen it looks like he as at least two stance shifts. One that forces Reverse Edge and the other you point out here. It looks like you can choose to enter (ie, by holding foward, for example) or just follow a normal string. In other words, it seems like you can cancel into DB from some strings or just follow-up normally. This would give him some fake-out potential mind games.

There's one thing I definitely like about Groh, and that he's not the traditional shoto-friendly, Mishima, punisher-bull dog, beginner friendly character like Patroklos from SC5, but more along the lines of Kilik, Xianghua-style beginner friendly styles. It's a refreshing look for a brand new character, I think.

Weirdly, Cassandra is closer to the time period design-wise than Sophitia (still with huge liberties of course).
