Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Japanese Soul Archive, aka Project Soul indicates Soul Calibur 2 takes place in 1591.

If that poster of the timeline is from Prima, which I think is, note that it is notoriously spotty and incorrect on a number of dates.

Checking other sources reveals Soul Calibur 2 takes place in 1591.

Ok I think I've done it. Considering popularity, The storyline we've previously known, ways old

characters can be reintroduced in a rebooted timeline, and the developers interviews that

emphasize unique fighitng styles and pleasing the fanbase I think I've got a good idea on what

the roster is going to look like.

To start, I feel they'll want some representation from each game in the main series even if it's

just one character from it so I've borken the list down that way. no star means they've already
been confirmed 1 star means they're super likely or basically confirmed, 2 stars mean less likely or possibly dlc and () means alt skin like they did in SC3 where li long was an alt skin for Maxi but had his own voice lines. I can see them doing this to allow series vet characters to be in the game without taking up a slot for more unique fighting styles. Basically like smash "echo fighters" any here's my thoughts.

I feel Hwang is super unlikely at this point as he and none of the koreans outside mina are particularly popular, so If eel they would have revealed him earlier to get him out of the way if he was in. However there's still a chance just for completeness or to give an excuse to have mina in that he show up, however I feel mina is more guaranteed that him.

Setsuka, Viola and Amy are all popular characters with popular unique movesets, but I also feel unless dlc will be exclusively guest characters or the the even less likely thought new characters, Sets and Viola would work better as DLC shills as despite their popularity they don't effect much of the plot of SC. Having said that again this is a reboot and the developers could very easily work in their plot lines into the narrative, even the possibility of connecting Viola and Amy if they make something happen to Amy a lot earlier in this timeline.

We know at least 1 more of the 23 on disc characters is going to be a newcomer. At max we get 3 completely new characters, but I feel we may cap out at 2 this game. I feel the dlc hook will be old chars and guests.

No. SCII, III and IV take place in 1590. And besides, this is a reboot. Why do people just forget that?
Okay, my mistake, I dunno why 1591 stuck in my head instead of 1590 (and I'm apparently not the only one, some kind of Mandela Effect?), but it made sense because the timeline of SoulCalibur VI is approaching SoulCalibur II but not actually starting SoulCalibur II, and it ends in 1590, so maybe I just logicked it that it should be 1591. Or maybe there's some things that say it's 1591 and some things that say it's 1590, looking at posts that have posted between when I started this post and when I finished. I dunno. Whatever, it's not super important nor the main point.

At any rate, the timeline that we've seen in the screenshots is skewed so that the middle part (SoulCalibur I) takes up a lot more space, and the end of it, at 1590, the space allotted is very small, which says there isn't much story to be had there, and also only places one character at the end of it, so far, and that is most likely for sure Talim, so the other three SoulCalibur II newcomers don't really have a place, unless their story is started way earlier, since we have seen between the first timeline screenshot and the second timeline screenshot that has less story progression, and it was mentioned in an interview as well, that completing more main story will unlock more side stories, so any of the lines could possibly progress up to the end, possibly, but the only one of them that has just cause to do so would be Tira, since she has known history of being a Bird of Passage in her younger days. And she's a SoulCalibur III character.

I don't forget that it's a reboot. I understand fully that it's a reboot. But it's a reboot that isn't changing anything from the past, from everything that has been seen so far. We're getting more details than we ever got before in story mode, and will be actually seeing what was only in biographical texts before, but they're not changing the course of events. Grøh is a new character, sure, and will play a role in Kilik's story, sure, but the story trailer and other screenshots have shown us that more or less, the story and the outcome will be the same, that Cervantes is defeated by Sophitia and Taki, that Siegfried will get Soul Edge and become Nightmare, that Kilik's group will reach Inferno, that Xianghua will get Soul Calibur, that Siegfried will be somewhat freed (but still has tendencies which is where he will slip back into Nightmare for the SoulCalibur II part of the story), and the legend will be retold once more. Nothing shown so far indicates that there will be radical change, so those without known history seem unlikely to suddenly get new history.

I'm aware that they could, if they wanted to, make up new story, like Grøh's intervention into Kilik's story, to bring someone in who wasn't involved otherwise, but it would come with the caveat that it couldn't change events that already occurred. If we had more roster space, there would be more freedom in this regard, but because we don't, it's far more likely they'll just expand on what they have right now instead of adding more new content. If there was anything else that was going to be brand new, I feel like they would have shown it by now.

It's actually from the New Legends of Project Soul, which was an artbook released sometime after SCV.
Understood, the dates are still wrong, though.
Here's my sources:
https://zelda.gamepedia.com/Soulcalibur_II
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_Calibur_2
http://soulcalibur.wikia.com/wiki/Soulcalibur_II
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soulcalibur_III

The main confusion about the date is probably because everyone points to the defeat of Nightmare in 1586 as the source of the 4 years later plot point. But in actuality, Nightmare's defeat isn't where the quote from, but actually Siegfried quest for redemption, which starts in 1587 and takes four years to go through before becoming Nightmare again.

It's a shame we don't have the old soulcalibur.com archive anymore. It'd be easier to pull the dates from the profiles there.

All I hope is that if there is a mimic (Inferno) it doesn't take a spot on the roster and is a hidden unlockable character. After V I don't think anyone wants a mimic.

() means alt skin like they did in SC3 where li long was an alt skin for Maxi but had his own voice lines.
(...)
Kilik(Seong Mina)
but... their weapons are different. Maxi and Li Long both use nunchaku :( Mina cannot use some of Kilik's moves, if she was to keep her naginata.

This seriously need to be an Intro for Tira.

Sets - I like her, but this character is ALWAYS OP. I'd love for her, and ANY other character with this playstyle to miss a game. ( In all seriousness, I could see her being in as DLC. I'd put her behind Cass.)

You shouldn't worry about Setsuka at the moment, but you should worry about Xianghua.
