Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Yeah sounds différent since I’m French but I really liked the fact he used the exact same voice / audio compression with painfully long sentences .
Yeah the « What The Fuck » that came from nowhere got me , and makes me realize once again that she had a killer voice tone in this épisode 😍

Wait, we're talking about that campy JPOP (with elements of world beat) track, not the title theme, correct? I don't know: I'm sorry the fellow died, but I feel like that outlet is stretching the meaning of "iconic" a little there. I mean, yeah it surely grew on you after nearly 30 years, and has a certain nostalgic charm and fun energy. But there's a reason it did not end up being the template for the openers to the following games..

Edit: I did just listen to the full version on YouTube, possibly for the first time, and do think it holds up a little better when you can hear the full instrumental outro that (if memory serves) was cut for SE because the opening animation was so short. In any event, it looks like the group certainly had its longterm fans, even if they never really cracked the big time--that's always nice to see.

Not unreasonable, although I personally think that one has to qualify that it has to be SCIII: Arcade Edition to get it that far up on the list, seeing as the PS2 version has so many bugs and balance issues in the core gameplay so as to make it cringely broken for any kind of truly enjoyable competitive play. In fact, it is not just the weakest game in the series in that respect, it is one of the most pointless and frustrating fighter sequels of all time, in terms of how disappointing it was for the longterm fans of the high-level play of the previous games in the series, and how damaging it was to the upward trend of series. I know it's a big game among the casual crowd to this day, and there are things I like about even the console version, but since I think it is reasonable to judge a fighting game first and foremost on it's multiplayer/competitive bona fides over its single player content, I have to give SCIII:CE a low over-all score. AE was great though! It's a pity the franchise's popularity is unlikely to ever warrant a rebalanced/combined edition of SCIII with the best of both worlds

SCII is a good candidate for #1, I think almost every longterm fan of the series would agree. I think one thing that doesn't always get ackwnowledged about its popularity is how it managed to balance the expectations of both the casual and the hardcore crowds--something the series has struggled to accomplish again ever since. It also has a unique history in that it had its share of unintended bugs too, but through a combination of said bugs not being too game breaking, being embraced by the competetive community, and selectively patched with the arcade versions before the console release (something that stopped with SCIII and forward), it all just turned into lightning in a bottle.

It's interesting to see where you place SCIV: I know it's somewhat controversial, but I actually think it might be the best or second best game in the series. I think it's kind of a mirror of SCII: it also balanced expectations from different players really well, but because it wasn't so novel and new an approach as SCII was when it launched, it just never reached the same heights of popularity. The package is a little skimpy in some areas, but for just generally stable, well-balanced (minus a doom combo) gameplay, artistic design, style, and performance, it's a great overall package. Massively underrated, imo.

It's a pity you never played the first two games; SCI in particular really set the stage for the series' future.

You can find my own half-specific/half-nebulous ranking in my signature, incidentally.

Sc3 in PS5 is nice.. But I wish it was Arcade edition with online play. But it's Bandai Namco always out of touch and late is some of the most important things

Wow, I don't think it's an exaggeration to say that it feels like you can use that to mark the end of an era for the 3D fighter genre. I'm honestly not super happy about the most likely implications for the future of either Tekken or SoulCalibur; I didn't agree with all of Harada's design philosophy, but beyond question he was a critical element of the success of both franchises over the last 20 years. Beyond that, the rare peak we have gotten behind the curtain at the internal development teams and higher level management decisions suggest that his advocacy was critical in keeping the 3D fighter titles on Namco's list of priorities (if not always at the top) when it comes to which properties the company was going to invest in, at any given time. So in terms of both guiding development and being a liaison to upper management, it doesn't seem like there is anyone left in the company that is remotely as well positioned to step into his shoes...

Does anyone following the story know: is he retiring outright or moving on to a new position somewhere?
