Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

The Counter Hit effect is the only one I have a problem with. I actually love all the other hit effects and flashy stuff and it makes the game look prettier. And I'm fine with Counter Hit HAVING a visual, but the current one is just too big, oddly shaped and looks like a half moon pulse emanating from the tip of your weapon. If your weapon or opponent just flashed blue or something instead it would be nicer. Just something less awkward looking would be appreciated.

I'll get used to it obviously. I already kinda have from the gameplay footage but I still don't LIKE it. It's s more for the pro gamers anyway, which I am not, so I have no use for it, lol. I'm sure for most of you it's a far more important thing.

I took another close look at gameplay footage and there is no difference at all in terms of size and shape for counter hits compared to normal hits. Only the colour looks different and it's not even too bright...

For that to work, the most discussed topics need to be stickied to the first page or they'll just keep popping up all over as, let's be honest, people don't go topic fishing through the archives or several pages back, and they are never going to.
Yeah, believe me, I know lol.

I still say that's better than this. This thread is basically just a discord chat, but w/ pages. What forums (emphasis on the plural) SHOULDN'T be. Maybe lock this thread, since it's just a "general" thread anyway and takes away from other threads. There already is a leaks/news thread, but ppl still post leaks/news here. A lock could/would fix that. Maybe also add separate threads for costume discussion, design/effects, , etc. Guiding forum traffic isn't too difficult. I mean, I posted a general question here once and it got moved. But I see ppl posting about specific things about videos, Talim, speculation, etc (all topics that actually have their own threads) all the time and it just stays here. So.../shrug. I just don't know what the actual intention of this thread is anymore, or was, since the last 7 pages are mostly about Talim, gameplay vids, and effects (all things that already do have their own thread, or could).

I understand this consideration.
One trouble that comes to mind though is that even if this thread is split up into multiple, topic specific threads, the natural spontaneity that happens when people discuss these things might end up defeating the point of dividing up the thread in the first place, and the topics will get all jumbled again.
Edit: for example, the SC6 shitposting thread often has legitimate stuff mixed in with the shitposts, and this thread, which is general convo, is often filled with shitposts, as astutely observed by @MichaelJackson one time (if I remember correctly). ;D

Mi-na- was actually in SC2, but I could maybe see her not making it?

Rock- I'd be shocked if he was in given that everytime he's in the game it feels like even namco doesn't care. Shame I'd like to see more large characters.

Tira/hilde/sets- all outside the SCII timeline, all decently popular, all with unique and fleshed out styles. I'd put all of them as most likely to hit DLC.

...Mina was an OG back in Soul Edge, lol. Kilik didn't even exist yet. Only game she missed was 5.
I think she makes the main cut, but could be DLC.

Tira - completely unique, so I can see her making the main cut with Zas from SC3
Yun - pretty much guaranteed IF Mina and Talim are both in since he's the third person in the trio. Main cut or bust. (Doesn't seem popular enough for DLC)
Rock - overtaken by Asta. I don't think he makes it period. But he might be DLC
Cass - THE DLC of Choice, imo. If I was designing the game, I'd make her the first DLC character reveal.

Sets - I like her, but this character is ALWAYS OP. I'd love for her, and ANY other character with this playstyle to miss a game. ( In all seriousness, I could see her being in as DLC. I'd put her behind Cass.)

Hilde - They need some notable characters for SC7. Hilde is it. I say she doesn't make this one. (unless there's some kind of "Arcade Edition" update in a year or two.)

Amy - Same as Hilde, but I can see her as MAYBE DLC.

Setsuka's an odd one, I get the feeling Bamco really likes her style but don't care about the actual character very much, considering how little of a role she has compared to Zas and Tira and even Hilde (she's not even the only Mitsurugi rival) and the fact that they even bothered to keep her style for SCV over Zas'/Talim's/Yun's/etc despite leaving the character out. Like they felt they made a mistake with her character or something.

Makes we wonder if we might see them try to replace her. There's always some new character that's an attempt to improve or replace an old style so who knows, maybe this time around we'll see a new attempt at Setsuka's style.

Seeing wind incorporated into Talims moveset makes me hope we'll see something similar with Tira and her ravens. Maybe not for her attacks but for her CE. I imagine something like her slashing the opponent once or twice, lifting her ring blade above her head and whistling. A flock of ravens storm through it and attack the opponent for a bit. Tira then follows up the attack by coming down from the air and slashing the opponent and it if kills the opponent she has a win stance similar to one of these three

To hold a character out of this game because you feel the need to save them for the next entry is hilarious. Luckily, the devs won't think like that.

Similarly, some people seem to want the next entry to come in like 2 years, but not only would that be horrible timing for the next gen, but I would instead hope that we have a masterpiece here that people are playing for a long time. And besides SCII, most Tekken/SC games get cannibalized by the next one. Part of that is lack of post-release dev support, but they also need an adaptable product that can last, which partly comes from mechanics and matchups getting further explored over time. There are many mechanics in this game that hopefully can be "broken in" by the community, and alongside that maybe they can continue to add favorite characters and unique, deep, weapon styles.

Setsuka is a character I would describe as a mixed bag. In terms of gameplay she has always had among the strongest fighting styles in the series (which was still shown with aPat), but in terms of story she is easily the weakest out of the three newcomers that were in SC3.

The more I look at SCVI, it makes me happy to see that the character models don't look like the glazed, airbrushed pieces of jerky that they used to look like back in IV and V.

EDIT: An astute observation made by closely scrutinizing Maxi's abs in this game compared to the previous games. For scientific purposes.

Nice Party Wolf. I know when I picked up Tekken 7 Fergus' guide to the chars (which is very similar) helped me greatly. Thanks for shining a flashlight of knowledge on the useful tidbits you have gathered for those of us in the dark who have not played the demo yet.

I mean, I'm not saying that's what I, personally, would do with Hilde or Amy, (or whoever) but it's definitely happened before. Particularly with games that have a massive amount of fan favorite characters.

Raphael, though, his events that you describe about bringing Siegfried out of Soul Edge's control, that doesn't happen until the end of SoulCalibur II, which is in the year 1591. So it doesn't fit on the timeline, so if he is in roster, he could be one of the three that is not in story.
Although it is looking more and more unlikely I disagree about Raphael. He has the perfect entrance for the series as he killed a noble and was kicked out of his home he doesn't fully come into the picture until II sure but he definitely has a beginning before it that they could do something with.

Cassandra is one of the characters I don't see appearing in the base game despite her popularity. I fully believe that she will be the expansion pass exclusive character. I believe Setsuka, Hilde, and Cassandra are the most likely characters for DLC...with the last one probably not originally planned to be a guest character but they might go ahead and do it and get rid of whoever they had planned to be 4 (or perhaps they'll change their mind and put one of those characters in the base game instead). I am hoping that the characters that we get for DLC will come with a stage and some singleplayer content though.

I think they would save some of the less popular characters for a rework. Also I'm pretty sure every soul calibur game has introduced a new female character...would be a bit odd if they don't this time around but wouldn't be too upset if they don't.

Was hoping this game would have MKX levels of character specific quotes.
I am hoping that the singleplayer modes end up resolving this somewhat and that characters have special dialogue with other characters but it just isn't in the game yet. I'm hoping Namco has simply removed all of that so as not to give away anything by accident.

This has been a part of speculation for quite some time. and it was suggested/leaked that the bottom row first three slots would go to characters who do not have story modes for one reason or another. This could be for characters who don't have relevant roles to play or it could also be unlockable boss characters. The possibility also exists that the long-standing hole in the center could be filled in by Inferno upon completion of the story, which would be an unlockable boss character and a mimic wrapped into one, so no need for Edge Master.

Talim is confirmed to be both in story and in roster, but due to her age looking relatively similar to her SoulCalibur II appearance, she can only really be the line above Zasalamel, which takes place in 1590.

Astaroth, Cervantes, and Lizardman were all seen in the story trailer and story screenshots that have been released, so those three are definitely safe bets at being both in story and in roster. Astaroth and Lizardman along with Ivy and Nightmare form the Schwarzstrom, and they would all have their roles to play. Cervantes would be killed during the prologue/SoulBlade part of the story, but revival after the events of SoulCalibur but before SoulCalibur II gives him a spot in story too. Voldo is a safe bet at being in roster for sure, since he's literally been in every single game, and is somewhat a mascot. His sub-rivalry with Yoshimitsu also suggests that he will be in story. Tira has story that could encompass this entire timeline, since she is confirmed active as a Bird of Passage starting in 1583 when she was nine years old. Doubt she actually appears as nine years old, probably closer to thirteen-fifteen years old, to be more reasonable, but she has a place both in story and in roster. The last story and roster spot could be either Hwang or Rock, if it's not a new character. I lean towards Hwang, since he has a unique style, unlike Rock.

Raphael, though, his events that you describe about bringing Siegfried out of Soul Edge's control, that doesn't happen until the end of SoulCalibur II, which is in the year 1591. So it doesn't fit on the timeline, so if he is in roster, he could be one of the three that is not in story. Same for Grøh's father, Vergeben has said that he will be a boss character, and if he's unlocked upon completion of the story, since he would be the last last boss, it would make sense if he is in roster but not story. That is, unless he's an overpowered boss like Night Terror, in which case, he may not be unlockable at all. The third and last roster but not in story slot could then go to Cassandra, since she's not really active until SoulCalibur II events either, but there isn't a timeline spot that fits her like Talim. If Grøh's father isn't unlockable, there's also the possibility that Seong Mi-na could go in one of these slots, for the same reason.

We have those two circles in the bottom left and bottom right, tiny circles just off of either side of the bottom row. They likely open submenus.

I'd say one is CaS and one is DLC, personally. The Bonus Characters might be unlockable CaS templates, perhaps, if they don't have their own movesets.
No. SCII, III and IV take place in 1590. And besides, this is a reboot. Why do people just forget that?

Looking at it again, I realize the yellow electricity I was thinking about is for stun. That's a logical visual indicator. And with counter, it makes sense that it's an extra shockwave, like you got extra force behind it, and the large blue lightning for break attacks make sense as well. And it's good that the weapons have an aura when used so they can be discerned regardless of lighting. The only character I think has a fairly large issue is Groh as his regular aura is similar to the counter color, and his SC state resembles the RE. Really no one should have a red remotely close to RE, but there's several characters with red weapon auras at one point or another.
