Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

"I... don't mind Talim as a character, but as a character she's a little BITCH. Sooooo..."

Honestly? Ok. That's iconic

Edit: I'd argue that Sophitia/Rothion was the only healthy relationship besides Li Long/Chie. Tira just had to come in and screw things up

My current best guess. Not too different from my previous guess, but we do have new information to work with.

speculation post e3.png

Green is obviously for confirmed characters.
Yellow is for characters which have not officially been confirmed but are obviously in. These include characters shown in story-mode illustrations (Cervantes, Astaroth, Lizardman) as well as characters which have been leaked through credible sources (Tira, Voldo). All of these characters are staples and have been in every game since their respective introductions.
Red denotes my own speculation, and includes both main roster and DLC. With the exception of 2B (more on that later), all the red characters may change places with each other, and in fact I'd say Raphael and Cassandra have a 50/50 chance of being swapped.
  • Raphael and Amy are both tremendously popular characters, placing 19th and 13th respectively—or 4th place combined. Given Namco's apparent focus on nostalgia characters, Okubo's emphasis on the weapons aspect of the series, and the prominence of the rapier during this time period, I would be very surprised if we didn't get either of these characters (not to mention Raphael's critical role in the Siegfried/Nightmare storyline). I think Raphael is far more iconic and interesting (and emblematic of the era in Soul Calibur they're trying to evoke), but Amy seems to also have a large fanbase. Vergeben's recent comments point to him being perfect DLC bait, so we'll have to see. Either way we're pretty much guaranteed to have at least one rapier user either at launch or by the end of season 1 DLC.
  • Seong-Mina didn't initially seem like a likely inclusion in my mind, due primarily to the limited roster space before E3. However, she does make sense from the perspective of an SC1/2 retelling, and the ERSB description of a spear user strongly implies she's in the game. With the added space I think her chances are pretty high now.
  • Hwang and Yun represent a very popular fighting style in the series, placing eighth in the popularity poll when their vote totals are combined. Hwang would make the most sense lore-wise, but Yun seems to be the more popular character. I'd say it's a toss-up between the two, and I doubt we'll get both until maybe a second season of DLC. I don't feel too strongly about either.
  • Cassandra placed 12th in the popularity poll, which puts her above every single one of the characters mentioned above, including the yellow ones (except for Tira). She was also in Lost Swords , which puts her in a similar situation as Mina according to Vergeben's comments, and various sources with alleged insider knowledge seem confident in her inclusion. My main reason for thinking she wouldn't be in launch roster is the fact that she could be perceived as a clone and Namco probably doesn't want the roster to have the same reception as SCV's. Having said that, I'm not sure she would be iconic enough to sell a lot of DLC, so she might make it in the base roster over another red character.
  • Rock and Setsuka are interesting in that they represent the two extremes of likely DLC characters. The former is not particularly popular, but he's the only remaining SC1 character and has tons of legacy appeal. The latter placed in the top 20 of the poll and has a unique fighting style which has proven popular among competitive players even after her departure in SCV.
  • 2B was, along with Geralt, the obvious choice for a guest character. She's a popular character from a popular game, has been pushed by some rather influential voices in the FGC directly to the producers of the game (including Kayane and Maximilan), and would fit decently well with the aesthetics of the series. Okubo's comments at E3 made it pretty clear that we can expect at least one additional guest character as DLC, and 2B from Nier makes by far the most sense.
And lastly, purple is a placeholder for what I think could be at least one more newcomer/antagonist/boss. This would likely be Groh's father, as Vergeben has been teasing since the game's initial reveal, but it could also be someone else. I still haven't ruled out a mimic, since that's a staple of the series, and we've already seen Inferno using someone else's weapon so it's not out of the realm of possibility for him to be it.

I still think the center slot will activate at some point, either as CaS or as an unlockable character. Even if CaS is opposite to the random-select button as some have argued, this theory still accounts for the presence of something in that space with the purple placeholder. It just seems extremely suspect that they'd add three more slots, two suspicious white markings at the edges, and still do nothing with the space in the middle.

Thus, I think this is the most plausible scenario, as it has plenty of flexibility built-in but still takes into account all the different data we have.

EDIT: I guess I should also mention that Tira is the only character in the top 10 that hasn't been revealed yet, and this scenario accounts for the entire top 20.

Not going to lie. A lot of these Talim reaction videos have not been to my liking. Either they were indifferent to her reveal or won't stop talking about some questionable parts about her outfit. Not sure about this video seems forced to me. May watch it later.
Wiidude made a reaction video to Talim’s reveal. Maybe you should watch that, because I haven’t.

Great post, I think I'm on board with most of it. Nier: Automata now being on the same three platforms as SCVI is also a big point in 2B's favour IMO.

Mimics place rather poorly in people's mind, it would be a waste of resources modeling and voicing a character just so it can exists and make people peeved about the inclusion of a mimic but not another character, mimics are of course cheaper, but at the end of the day their reception just doesn't warrant their existence.

I still don't believe Mina has a bigger chance than Cassandra, but Rock is the one I think it is the most unlikely in such scenario, the three do indeed stand is similar grounds, but Rock has been dropped off the series during time lapses where he should be active. If it comes down to a toss between Cassandra and Mina, I think they did go with Cassandra, but I'm pessimistic about her chances.

Setsuka is a great DLC bait, not questions asked. About the second one, I stand for Hilde, I hope the DLC guest is not 2B, but if need be to sell units, I suppose I'm okay with it.

Otherwise, I agree with you a lot.

Instead of a mimic, it could be interesting to have someone in the lore that's mastered every technique, but in gameplay becomes in a way like A.B.A. as a characters that is both passive and aggressive. They have a certain array of counter moves that will absorb that technique for a given amount of time to be used in conjuction with a very vanilla moveset and less than stellar attributes. That could be fun.

Why would CAS be placed in the center, when previous character select screens have always placed CAS slot symmetrical with the random select?

Wouldn't it be better to have a boss character in the center? Or the DLC character menu?

EDIT: ALso I would put Talim where you put Edgemaster. Makes sense given she's a fan favorite and would fit opposite of Zasalamel, another fan favorite.

You're also lacking boss characters here. Remember, if Geralt of all characters is getting a story mode inclusion, that pretty much means that only six characters have potential returner status, the remaining two or three characters are likely bosses.

I wonder who the most common characters to see online will be this time. I feel like I saw signficantly more Natsu and Cervantes than anyone else last time. I played SCIV online a good bit but I don't remember who was most popular there (Kilik and Hilde maybe?), and by the time I got around to SCII HD it was too late to see what the casual online playerbase was like.
I found Mitsurugi by far the most commonly played online.

I agree with disliking mimics, but considering they've been in the roster of every single Soulcalibur (if I'm not mistaken) it seems like Project Soul are pretty attached to the idea and won't be getting rid of it any time soon. I mean, they even doubled down on it for SCV with having two different kinds of mimics.

Personally I'd prefer no mimcs, but I think it's a safe bet to say there will be at least one. Since we know we'll almost certainly be fighting Inferno, I'm curious if he's going to be the new mimic, or just be a fancy CAS, or even have an original moveset. Worth noting that Edge Master is sorta important in the original SC1 storyline too, since he trained Kilik and sent him to find Soul Edge.

I could maybe see something like Edge Master being the mimic for the good guys and Inferno being a mimic for the bad guys, since they seem to be pushing for the whole rivalry/good vs evil dynamic between characters. Probably won't happen, but if they really want to go for two mimics again, I could see something like that.

You see I'd be inclined to agree with this, but we already know inferno is in the game and he has been seen using Nightmare's weapon. I explicitly mentioned that the Edge Master picture is just a placeholder for what could be a brand-new character, but we do know that at least one mimic will be in the game in some capacity. I think Inferno would make the most sense as the season pass bonus, as you're not locking a character behind a $30 paywall, but that's just an opinion. And again, that spot could easily switch places with another of the red characters at the bottom.
I hope the DLC guest is not 2B
Who would you rather get instead? I'm not a big fan myself, but I can't think of any other characters with mainstream appeal from recent games that would fit the bill. Maybe another Assassin's Creed character with Ezio's moves? The new Kratos? Cloud from the FFVII remake that will never come? I genuinely can't think of many viable alternatives. Plus Kayane was shilling super hard for 2B to Okubo in person so they know there's interest.

idk, the center slot has got to have something in it for sure. I accounted for this with the placeholder. Did you read my post?
You're also lacking boss characters here.
ALso I would put Talim where you put Edgemaster.
I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention to character location. Also did you read my post?
but considering [mimics] have been in the roster of every single Soulcalibur (if I'm not mistaken)
They were absent in 4. Plus they were super unpopular in 5 and all placed at the very bottom of the poll, so it's not entirely out of the question for there to be none this time around. It does look like we'll get inferno back, and he seems to be using Nightmare's style in the story trailer so he's probably a mimic.

I love mimics. More than one is a waste of space, but a singular mimic is a must in my book. It's not something to use competitively, but going through the arcade mode with a character that switches styles each round is tons of fun and a good way to quickly test one's skills with the whole roster. Also mimics are lots of fun while playing non-serious matches with friends.
Since we know with SC6 Okubo and the team prioritize making a fun game for everyone as opposed to concentrating on the competitive aspect, I don't think skipping on a mimic is a good idea at all.

I fully understand what you mean, but remember that in SE Inferno was just a Cervantes re-skin, I think you bring fair points and I didn't mean to overlook what you said, I was just focusing on the possible mimic, I apologize if I came off any other way.

Guest for Soul Calibur are indeed rather tricky, my dream guest wouldn't ever make into the game, but I wouldn't be too bothered if they picked someone from the Dark Souls franchise, it wouldn't be as a good move as picking 2B as far as monetary gain goes, but I just don't like her concept for Soul Calibur, specially if they bring the mini turret she has in her games.

If they've got Inferno model in the game anyway likely being a mimic boss then they might as well make the character playable I can't imagine it'd take too much extra effort. I just hope it does end up being in the middle or wherever rather than in a shown slot.

I feel like Dark Souls characters and the playstyle of the games are too plain to be guests, we've already got a swordsman with magic as a guest star. I'd rather get someone who'd have an interesting and unique playstyle (one fun to play and to watch).

By the way, there are 5 mimics in the series who are mostly all clones of each other by definition, also they all have something cool about them, so no surprise different mimics ended up cannibalising each other at the poll. Should we add up all the votes for all five mimics together, we'll see there are 121 votes total, that is 26th place on the poll right below Astaroth, above such characters as Z.W.E.I., Algol, Dampierre, etc. Not too bad.
