Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

I don't particularly recall that Amy and Viola were denied to be the same person by a lot of people back in the day, but there was just too much implication that they were and no confirmation to back it up. Likely due to the fact that Story Mode was severely cut in SCV's release.
i guess... idk i never really questioned it. like yeah it's implication but I kinda just always saw they were the same person and never thought twice about it.

so I've been watching this guy since someone posted the sophie video a bit ago aand i got to this video
he says something interesting

did people really deny that amy and viola are the same person?

Eyyyy I saw this the other day. And it’s because one would assume you’re basically grasping at straws for anything SCV related considering the story basically only focused on Patrokolos and Pyrrha lmao

I did like this dude’s take on how Nightmare should have been along with Amy gaining her memories back.

I genuinely feel like SCV's story in general could have been really interesting if we had just gotten everything. The new characters were kids, sure, but potential existed for depth and development. Patroklos and Pyrrha for example were the main characters, they were written awfully but they could have been so much more complex and dynamic. Pyrrha specifically has so much potential for layering and depth considering her background but they squandered it. If only...

Pyrrha as the new host for Soul Edge had a good bit of depth. It showed her underlying insanity beneath that anxious shell she had.

Yes, depth existed there. It was just never fleshed out sufficiently enough. We needed more time with Pyrrha as a character in order to explore everything she was struggling with. We got glimpses of all of it but never did we really get that lens on her that had the potential to make her the most complex character in the entirety of the franchise.

They did explain why Raphmare uses the greatsword in New Legends of Project Soul, because it was an agreement between Raphael and Inferno, that Raphael gets to use his own methods to obtain souls (that of politics and manipulation) in exchange for letting the sword keep its form. Maybe it's a bit handwavey, but they did give a reason.

I also think the story makes a little more sense that Z.W.E.I. and Nightmare being thrown off the same cliff after being defeated, that Raphael, regaining his sense of self, would wake up and only remember a bit about himself, that being Amy, and hoping that Amy would be able to help recover the rest of his memories, he would go look for her. Z.W.E.I., perhaps not knowing that Raphael was once Graf Dumas (or if he did, they would come to blows and Raphael would end up maybe convincing him that Graf Dumas was a facade, and maybe even possible that the original Graf Dumas was killed and Nightmare replaced him), would help him in his quest in agreement with Raphael helping Z.W.E.I. get back to Viola, not knowing that Viola and Amy were one in the same. When they reconvened, that's when conflict would occur, hinted by Z.W.E.I. and Viola's combat dialogue. But we may never really know how this would have played out for sure. So many stories end with, "Well, if SoulCalibur V had been completed..."

The problem with SCV was that they focused more on gameplay(even though I still argue that just guarding is terrible and adds a false sense of depth to combos)and gave a false promise on DLC content for a story mode, due to a lack of funding.

There’s a plethora of questions that will forever be unanswered in SCV, that I hope will get retconned in SCVI.

I think we are all in agreement that the marketing trailers for SCVI have been pretty bad and that's not even including the Tira announcement. The trailers outside of the main story and libra of souls trailers have been very lacking simply due to repetition, I feel as if throwing in pieces of the story mode would actually help them a bit because damn if the new art direction for story mode isn't nice to look at. If Cervantes and Raphael are the last two characters to be revealed I feel as if it could build some hype if they do not follow the same old formula. Then again perhaps we should just be happy they haven't gone the live-action route for any of their trailers this time around.

Just for record when I am talking about marketing being bad I am specifically talking about trailers and similar videos. I am not talking about all the many ways they've previewed the game...although they have overused the current build of the game just a tad.

not to mention the music in that trailer is awful

seriously who signed off on this? I imagine some suit going "make the shit loud and obnoxious, and throw in that wub thing all the kids are into, they'll fucking love it"

just turning the bass and treble to 200 and throwing a WUB WUB WUB here and there isn't music

Thing that bugged me about Pyrrha was how she fought like Sophitia, despite not really being trained or really anywhere around her mother. I remember thinking they should have scrapped Viola and just made Pyrrha the magical telekinetic who floated around the sword, shield and maybe Tira's hoop (because she would eventually go ape shit and end up killing her). My preferred idea of her was pretty much like Azwel ability wise, possesed by Souledge.

I didnt like SC5 but for different reasons than anyone else. My thought was, if you're going to do a 15 year time skip, then wipe the slate clean and restart all the movesets from scratch. None of this copied and pasted on younger character nonsense. To me, that isnt really changing anything and it could have been a great opportunity for them to reintroduce some of these weapon concepts that were stuck on popular characters.

I doubt most people would like that though.

Some less than others (Natsu), but I felt like some (Xiba) were pretty different than the original, while others (Leixia) were somewhere inbetween.

Overall critic scores and reviews. I looked up the score numbers, played most of the games myself, and even read reviews about them. In the past, SoulCalibur received extremely positive responses but for whatever reason, Namco fails to capitalize on marketing it. I have never seen a SoulCalibur game dip below 80% aggregate critic ratings and yet there are games out there that don't score as high but continue to sell. This points to a flaw not in the development team but in the marketing team.

Great point. This might be a really terrible thing to say, but I think marketing is usually a pretty scheezy role, since it typically involves attempting to manipulate or mess with user's minds in subversive manners to get people to buy a product. The charm of Soul Calibur is pretty unique, and it might be a quirkiness that typical marketers do not know how to fully highlight. It doesn't fit the mold of a typical fighting game, and it doesn't have any references to anime that is pretty much the rest of Bamco's game roster.

I don't think that we're all in agreement that the marketing for SCVI is bad.

First, the marketing has barely begun. From my perspective the marketing has been fine or even great. Namco has rolled out a great demo of the game for the hardcore gamers at places like E3, the Melbourne event last week and PAX. We (the hardcore) have had great opportunities to see early builds of the game and play with some of the most interesting characters on the roster. Additionally they have been tantalizing us with early reveals of some of the new and returning characters in the game. I will concede that the Tira reveal as DLC was a little rough, but again as a fan of the game with the means to spend the extra money for extra characters it doesn't matter. Regardless of how Tira was handled Namco had very early on messaged that there would be DLC characters as there have been in the past.

Second, the marketing has barely begun. The game comes out the 19th of October. The greater public, not the hardcore have a short attention span. I would be surprised if real marketing doesn't start at the TGS which is conveniently just about a month before launch. SC IV sold about 2.4M copies, SC V did about 1.5M, Tekken 7(I saw 2.5M as of Dec 2017). There is a marketing budget and timeline in place. I just think you may have different expectations about the marketing you would like to see and when.

In summation I believe that the strife about Namco's lack of or poor marketing is just the impatience of a few hardcore fans who are seriously impatient for the game to come out and know all the details (I'm absolutely impatient - that's why I read the updates on this thread several times a day and get email notifcations - lol.).

Chill folks - TGS is near and release is just over a month away.

Pyrrha's fear activates the mystic power of Omega Sword & Elk Shield :sc5pyr1:
Pyrrha receive absolutely no training in swordmanship. It was rare for a woman to be trained in combat skills, and it even less likely in Pyrrha's case due to her gentle and fearful nature. The sword and shield Pyrrha held in her hands were divine weapons blessed by Hephaestus and originally gifted to Sophitia. Despite born a simple baker's daughters, Sophitia's enduring faith had earned het the attetion of the gods. Were Sophitia had used the weapons with conviction, Pyrrha had only her desire to survive. Every swing of the sword and block with the shield was enacted out of Pyrrha's intense fear of death, and it was the divine power within the weapons that transformed her wild flailing into effective moves. Sophitia had been grated the protection of the gods as a reward for her faith, but what gods were protecting Pyrrha, a girl who did not even know to call Greece her home
Patroklos was trained by Lucius Alexander, so his style is different from Sophitia/Cassandra. :sc5pat1:

Pyrrha's fighting abilities are a result of the blessings from the Eumenides (aka the Furies), the Goddesses of Vengeance.

Patroklos was trained by Lucius Alexander, so his style is different from Sophitia/Cassandra.
Lucius wasn't a fighter, he just taught Patty about baking. Patroklos learned his fighting skills from various teachers.

Ugh, yes, and she deserved better. She was an interesting character (unlike Pattycakes, who was an idiot, though written that way...). Tira and Soul Calibur pulling the strings connected to the main two was also neat. Shame the rest of the cast played almost no role in anything.

Well, there it is i guess. Sounds ridiculous to me but i suppose its an explanation. Personally, i prefer my imagined telekinetic boss Pyrrha over the two versions we got but oh well.
