Soulcalibur VI General Roster Speculation Thread

SoulCalibur VI: which 3 characters do you most hope for?

  • A brand new character

  • Amy

  • Cassandra

  • Hilde

  • Hwang/Yunsung and/or Lizardman

  • Rock

  • Setsuka

  • Viola

  • Z.W.E.I.

  • Other: Abyss, Algol, Dampierre, Elysium, Leixia, Li Long, Patroklos, etc.

But adding a guest who uses Sword & Shield style is just going to be adding salt in the wound for people who wanted Cassandra, so I doubt that will happen.
The exception is and always will be Link though. It would be amazing to see a Nintendo Switch version of the game and seeing Link on the front cover of it. The sales will be big.

I feel like the only guest character with sword + board that would be acceptable to people would be Link. EVERYONE would lose their collective minds for Link on a Switch port. Even if he was terrible just like SC2.

I'd rather see TP Gannon or Midna.

But that would obviously only happen on a switch port.

Well, Jump Force is coming out and will sell plenty and is doing a "realistic style" for anime. I would expect Dark Souls over Sekiro.

Really, I think the guest has to be someone available on both consoles and PC. If not a Bamco property and if not from a show, what are some big games that have been popular in the last three years?

From my understanding, a successful guest character is going to have to be someone who is either very recognizable or somebody that the fighting game community is familiar with.

Looking at SoulCalibur's list of guest characters we have:
  1. Heihachi - Well known character from Tekken and from a fighting game Namco owns.
  2. Spawn - A very popular comic book character at the time and is easily recognizable.
  3. Link - Extremely well known. You have to be living under a rock to not recognize him.
  4. Darth Vader - Extremely well known. You have to be living under a rock to not recognize him.
  5. Yoda - Extremely well known. You have to be living under a rock to not recognize him.
  6. The Apprentice - Capitalizes on the anticipated and upcoming game Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.
  7. Kratos - Very well known and can be recognized by many to be the guy from God of War.
  8. Ezio - His design is easily recognized to be from the hit series Assassin's Creed.
  9. Geralt - Very well known and can be recognized by many to be the guy from The Witcher.
Three of the characters listed above (Link, Darth Vader, and Yoda) are pop culture icons that even anyone who has never played any of The Legend of Zelda games or watched any of the Star Wars movie can recognize. Spawn was very popular at the time and Heihachi is from a similar game and from the same company as SoulCalibur so they were easy to advertise, not to mention that Tekken was a very popular game even more so than today from my perspective. Kratos, Ezio, and Geralt are all characters from hit games that have posters and even statues decorated on retailers like GameStop and Best Buy.

It's really difficult to think of guest characters for SoulCalibur when looking at the standards of previous guests. The best I could come up with to be really eye catching is Cloud from Final Fantasy VII and Scorpion from Mortal Kombat. 2B is also a welcoming addition due to many demands but that comes of as more of a DLC for people who are already fans of the game or gamers in general rather than advertising for the general audience. I don't even think someone as popular as Dante comes close to the gravity of the characters that were previously featured as guest characters in SoulCalibur. Whoever the guest is really is a big mystery.

Your avatar reminds me... I'd actually like Ornstein as a guest, haha

I feel he is someone no one thinks of or realizes would be good until they see his reveal video and attacks. Then they would think back to repeated encounters at the cathedral and realize how bad ass he was.

Castlevania happends to be getting its new Netflix season in October and i believe one of the Belmonts is showing up on the upcoming Smash game...

I like your Star Wars idea, but I think that if we get a Star Wars character (especially Yoda again!) I think it's far more likely to be Kylo Ren (basically Darth Vader style) and Rey (basically apprentice style) than any of the classic Star Wars cast. The only question is who gets the Yoda sized slot BB8 or maybe a porg? Additionally, I agree with the FF7 cast - I've said before that the remake is coming and who knows maybe the release date will be announced at TGS.

Or Tifa to bring back the Grieve Edge style with some additional flair. Tifa is also quite the kicker, not just the fist brawler type.

Her style also seems very "gender neutral" to me for those of us who complain about that sort of thing.

Wonder if they would include some sort of materia loadout mechanic for movesets?

Lol all the guests have been men.

A materia build out would be rad - like a different move list based on your materia decisions (maybe linked to the outfit). A materia build out could also be easily linked to the weapon choice and that could be for any of the FF7 characters.

I definitely do not want a Star Wars character again and especially not Yoda lol. And Kylo Ren and Rey does not carry the same gravity of appeal as Darth Vader or any of the above characters. Maybe only over Heihachi and nowadays Spawn. What my point was is that every guest we have had has a massive pull about them. Very recognizable and aren't side characters. They are basically either the face of the franchise, a greatly recognized character even by consumers unfamiliar with the product it originated in, or a character that is well recognized by the fighting game community.

Cloud Strife would be a third greatsword.

Yuffie is the best bet. We don't yet have a giant cross/shuriken for a weapon in the game
The thing is that many would ask who Yuffie is. Anyone who's played Final Fantasy would get it but it wont work for those who hasn't. Even those who hasn't played the game can easily identify Cloud or even Sephiroth but not the side characters. The characters I pointed out weren't based on my preferences by the way since there are other characters I would rather see or better yet I would rather see no more guest characters. I pointed them out because they have advertising pull and are extremely iconic. People who's never played Final Fantasy VII can actually say "Hey, that game has Cloud from Final Fantasy. I never played the game but that sounds interesting." instead of wondering who Yuffie is.
Also Link was technically the fourth Sword and Shield user in SoulCalibur II but look at how that turned out.

Following Tekken 7's trend: Akuma and Geese are well known in the fighting game community and by extension Tekken fans; and Noctis is the current face of a very popular franchise.

The idea is to draw from the general audience and not a niche audience. If they wanted to really draw from the niche audience, we would be seeing Cassandra and not another guest.

TLDR
The only viable guest characters I see are pop icons, poster character of a currently trending franchise, or characters well known by the fighting game community. Not side-characters (no matter how awesome they are) who an outsider would know about unless they actually played the game.

I think a lot of people overestimate the popularity of Noctis lol. Many casuals who might be interested in SC would have no idea who that fool is.

I have a feeling the guest is not a game character based off Okubo's reaction to Kayane's interview question and how under wraps it is but that's just a feeling.

Also Geese is well known in the fighting game community but do a lot of people care about him?

idk - I think the point of a guest character is cross-marketing. A character like Geralt of Rivia is a character that brings folks from a popular franchise. So 'popular franchise' is one video game market.

Noctis was cross marketing to get a popular market to play tekken. Maybe there's another game or popular culture outlet that Namco is drawing from, Okubo said that the other company was the reason he couldn't reveal the next gust character. I think that there will be another guest reveal that hypes another soon to come game.
