Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

I haven't seen that part yet, but does Hwang have a unique voice actor? If so, I'm inclined to believe they have plans for him. I know almost for certain we'll see Amy later, as they got Heather Hogan-Watson to return for her, and I doubt they would go through the trouble if she was just a bit character.

He's being voiced by Grant George, also Kilik's VA.

I don't think so. Went back to check and it doesn't sound much like him. To me, he sounds more like Yuri Lowenthal than Grant George. I think it may just be one of the CaS voice actors, as he does sound familiar.

Oh you might be right, actually. I don't think it's Yuri Lowenthal (Patroklos was Yuri Lowenthal and my fight or flight senses aren't going off when I listen to Hwang). Now I'm certain it's one of the CaS voices, perhaps Kaiji Tang/Young Knight ("I can't run away.")?

It's really difficult to tell if Hwang's VA is unique. It's definitely not grant george though. He sort of sounds like Johnny yong bosch in a very subdued tone.

Why do games release on Tuesdays in the US anyway? Friday's the normal day here in the UK and that makes a lot more sense, since you can pick up the game after work/school and play it right away over the weekend. While Tuesday releases are awkwardly mid-week with a limited time to play it for a few days.

Because you are over work by Tuesday already so you just wanna splurge on something, and so that $$$ doesn't compete with weekend $$$.

It might also be easier though for US offices to monitor what's going on during the week.

Really? I think Erica Lindbeck and Kate Higgins did great as Sophitia and Tira, respectively.

I'm very fond of Erica, but her performance simply doesn't sit right with me in this role. The pure innocence sounds stilted. As for Ms. Higgins, her take itself is intriguing, but I still find it lacking. It's difficult to outdo Katie McNutty, and Gloomy in particular sounds too much like Ms. Higgins is trying to sound like the SCV rendition when it's very clearly her. I find her performances as Natsu and Talim much, much more fitting; plus you can actually mistake the two for different actresses.

My soul is burning, I cannot keep it anymore!!!

I am a big fan of the Soul Calibur franchise. Hell, I am even getting a day off on Friday only to play this game non-stop!!

That being said, what I cannot keep it anymore is my rant. I am very disappointed with how things are being handled by Namco. When this game was announced, I decided to take distance from all the information about it. Of course I have being watching the character reveals trailers and all those stuff, but I know myself, and if I get into the hype train too soon I tend to suffer slowly until the game is finally release. Actually, this “hype” only happens to me with Final Fantasy and Soul Calibur games, but in regard this franchise I learned the lesson in the hard way.

I was here, that time 6 years ago. Searching for every hint, every clue, speculating with anything and everyone about the final row in the character select screen of Soul Calibur V. I was completely ok with Natsu, Kiba and Leixia replacing old characters. I understood the whole “change of generation” thing, for me that was never an issue. The new characters Viola and Zwei were cool. Hilde and Algol were back (even thou everyone hated them for being utterly broken in SCIV). Everything was perfect... Then, the final row happened.

For a fighting game, the character roster is everything. And not only the fighting style of a character, but also the character itself. In SCV we had 2 examples of things done great and things gone wrong regarding the final roster of the game.

1) They introduce a guest character, Kratos, in SCIV PSP. I am not a fan of guest characters in Soul Calibur in general, but I can live with them. Kratos had a very fun fighting style, a shame to be wasted for only a game. So what did they do? They took the fighting style of Kratos and combine it with Lizarman. By doing this they refreshed the otherwise forgettable character of Lizarman, give him more a feral and fitting style (2 axes instead of an axe and a shield) and even rename him to Aeon. This was perfect.

2) On the other hand, we had Alfa Patroklos. They took Setsuka fighting style and give it 100% to an already existing new character in the same game. Setsuka is gone, but we should not complain because her style is still in the game... This is just wrong. In a fighting game, a character is all about visuals, gameplay and aesthetic wise. See the whole MVCI drama. A whole franchise killed for a single quote even before the game was even released:

"If you were to actually think about it, these characters are just functions. They're just doing things" (Peter Rosas)

You can replace Kilik for his son Kiba, XIangua for her daughter Leixia, Sophitia for Pyrra and even Taki for her student Natsu. Even if their personalities are different, the visuals and the fighting styles somehow resonate between them. They are different, just that. But Patsuka is just a lazy insult for Setsuka fans. This is just wrong.

Then we had Edgemaster, Kilik and Elysium... Not only they are mimic characters, but they were far enough to bring Sophitia and Kilik only for that. And in a lesser way, Pyhrra Omega, taking the space of another fighting style for a beefy version of an existing one. Zasalamel, Yun-seong, Mina, Setsuka, Talim and Rock were gone. But we had Patsuka and 3 mimics... A new generation of new characters to replace the old ones but no Bangoo, who was literally in the making for years. So many missteps in the roster. And yet as a fan I played a lot and enjoyed the game as it was.

I had to wait 6 years to see my beloved Soul Calibur back. And here we are again. The developers either do not care or really do not have a clue of what went wrong last time. They are selling the game as a reboot of the franchise, and I love that. But what are they rebooting? SC1-2? SC1-3? Why do we have Zasalamel and Tira (SCIII) but no Yung-seong, Cassandra, Lizarman and Rock (SCII)? And don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t care less about Lizarman, Yung-seung (or Hwang) and Rock. I have never played them, never being a fan. But I just want Soul Calibur to be perfect. How hard can it be having the roster of SCIV (plus Groh and Azwel) and add Viola and Zwei as DLC? Literally, not a single fighting style is missing. Or if they wanna cut the reboot at SCIII put also Hilde and Algol as DLC. Everyone would be happy, no negativity or complains... But they don’t really have a clue.

They cannot shield themselves in the “Timeline” to justify some characters not being in or out. Seung-Mina trips to Europe do not make any sense without Hwang or Yung-seung around too. We have Nightmare and Siegfried at the same time! Even Nightmare recognizes Siegfreid as his father’s murderer (and as cool as this is, makes no sense). They had the chance to retell the story. If they don’t want Hwang, Yung-seoung, Rock, Cassandra and Lizardman back, why do they keep teasing them? Just retell the story without them... But no, they give fans false hopes only to generate disappointment. And hence, the negativity.

Characters aside, Namco is doing a poor job with this game in all regards. And I am sorry but even if Okubo seems like a loved figure around here and someone that we should veneer and be thankful for bringing the franchise back, he is to blame here. Do not generate an expectation that you cannot fulfill. Everything regarding this game was perfect until the infamous “Tira announcement” and everything else since then has been down the rails... And I am not against the fact of Tira being DLC (cause I really thought this was a SCi-II reboot), but Okubo lied when he said that they made her DLC due for fan demands and time restrains. And then we find out that she is on the disc already. A lie. As simple as that. Then, when the people got angry about this whole situation he threatened the community saying that this might be the last Soul Calibur if we don’t buy it... just lame.

In addition, what happened with that twitter that some time ago of one of the developers working in SoulCaliburVI posted? He literally said that he wanted to die because the working conditions in this game. That information completely disappeared from the internet, also from this website, without any trace. Everything for the sake of the game...

And Okubo personal attitude towards the fandom is also questionable. If in America a fan dressed ad Voldo appear in the stream he is pissed off (cause Voldo? Breathing close to him??? Pfff...), but hey, a model dressed as Ivy half naked showing her boobs around in a Japanese stream is completely OK...

To sum up, Bandai Namco doesn’t deserve this community.
