Algol Character Matchup Discussion

Is this to stop us from talking about combos? ;)

Ok I'll start.

Talim: Very good match-up for Algol. She can't get close to Algol because of her pathetic range and bubbles getting in the way. Wind sault is risky with bubbles around.

lol talim

[mikosu] Ian when you bubble spam me when im talim i want to kill my self

BB owns her pretty bad also

you can bait 66B with back dash then do a quick 4A+B for a juggle its hard to do but worth the risk

Lizardman has a fairly bad matchup with Algol because he works in mostly close range and can't get around bubbles very easily without resorting to crawl.

He's also very outranged by Algol.

I doubt even algol vs talim is worse than 8-2.

He can cancel his backdash to block lizardman's 66A unless you are backdashing at heinous disadvantage.

i spam both Qflip and bubbles

what is my match up?

srsly though

you can usually TP astas attacks on anticipation

I think Algol has disadvantages against Ivy, Kilik, Setsuka and Amy.

Ivy can negate shield and upclose she has better options with CL and SW. Up close is a CF tossup with Ivy's many options for that and Algol's 2B+K. Ivy 6-4.

Should I need to go into Kilik. 6-4 Kilik.

Setsuka wants the bubbles to come. She will charge her counter this way either by A+B or active GIs, not to mention she has better tools mid range than Algol's BB. In this match, shield and projectile use isn't a good idea, only in combos. Setsuka 6-4.

Amy-B+K and 33B puts her up close nicely for her mixups and once she is in your face, advantage is all hers. Amy 6-4.

nah amy doesnt auto win up close algol has strong TC and TJ

also B+K is over rated against bubbles, its not a beat all end all

I would have to disagree with Amy being a bad matchup for Algol. If anything it should be 5:5.

I don't really know about Ivy so I'll reserve my judgement on that.

How come whenever anyone talks about somebody having a good matchup vs Algol everybody always points out that said character can auto gi bubbles? Bubbles are only 1 aspect of Algol's game and people need to realize that he has way more tools at his disposal.

this is probably the greatest post in this SA to date

I think we should start make an actual chart to agree on. Lots of people seem to think Algol is the best in the game because he 'owns' so many characters, but I don't really think that's the case. I'll start on a matchup chart and we can go from there.

Algol Vs:

Amy - 4:6
Astaroth - 5:5
Cassandra - 5:5
Cervantes - 4:6
Darth Vader - 4:6
Hilde - 4:6
Ivy - 4:6
Kilik - 4:6
Lizardman - 6:4
Maxi - 7:3
Mitsurugi - 6:4
Nightmare - 4:6
Raph - 5:5
Rock - 6:4
Seong Mi-na - 5:5
Setsuka - 4:6
Siegfried - 4:6
Sophitia - 5:5
Taki - 7:3
Talim - 8:2
The Apprentice - 4:6
Tira - 6:4
Voldo - 5:5
Xianghua - 4:6
Yoda - 5:5
Yoshimitsu - 6:4
Yun-seong - 7:3
Zasalamel - 4:6

I don't think my list is 100% accurate, but I think it's accurate enough to start a discussion on and modify it from there. Some of the ones that I'm not really sure on are Sophi, X, Tira, and Yoshi. Also I used to think vs Voldo was in Algol's favor, but after fighting Manta at Evo I really don't think it's that bad of a matchup for Voldo. He's got really good tools to get in on Algol if he combines them with good GI use.

Whodat: Algol's up close game sucks compared to Amy's. And since the bubble shield is pretty useless against her due to B+K and some of her other bubble evading moves, he'll be forced to fight her up close most of the time. And since his step is horrible she's even harder t deal with up close, since stepping is usually the best way to deal with Amy up close. The matchup is definitely in Amy's favor.

Coming from the Astaroth point of view I would say either 5-5 or 6-4 in Asta's favor. Algol has a suck up close game and at mid/long (not full screen) Asta actually punishes bubbles with giant chunks of damage. Algol can't step so he's TRULY stuck with Astaroth and has to rely on psychic pokes.

The only thing I would say Algol has that MIGHT make it a problem is the giant combo/infinite he can do on Astaroth but infinites are no big deal to me.

Let me know what Algol can do that makes it not even an even match up for Asta.

Cool, i wasn't really sure on that matchup either. I changed it to 5:5, since I haven't really felt disadvantaged when I used Algol in this matchup. Unless you really think it should be 4:6 instead, then I'll take your word for it.
