Electing Idle The President Of Banning

Except that we don't ban people here at 8WR (people ban themselves). Banning doesn't really accomplish anything. Anyone who doesn't want to be banned, can EASILY get around bans, create a new account and keep trolling the forums. All banning does is start feuds; a person who gets banned is much more likely to troll the forums than if you just closed their posts, or ignored them.
Worst case scenario, around here we do something called the "Tachy goes to Coventry". Putting someone under the "Tachy" effect basically puts them down as a GLOBAL ignore. No one on the forums can see their posts, so they don't upset anybody; but the user who got "Tachy'd" doesn't know they've been punished. Eventually they start to think that people are just ignoring them, and they have lost their power (no one to feed the trolls)... so they move on.
People who use bans on a forum system (*cough* DL) are inherintly oblivious to how the internet works and how forums work. Not to mention, it is just assanine to put someone in a usergroup with LESS privilages as someone who is NOT LOGGED IN. If you think about it... you're logged in, you have no browsing abilities... log out, and now you have browing abilities. WTF?
If you're gonna ban someone, might as well just delete all their posts and the account. This cleans the forums up better, and it gives the offender the chance to recreate their account without the ban. Maybe they learn something... if they don't, at least they can use the same username and you know who they are!
