Gameplay vs. Story: Which is more important?

Gameplay or Story?

no one is talking about cpus. The "gameplay" we are talking about is simply a working fighting system without moves randomly whiffing or bugging out and an overall balanced game which is the most important thing in a fighting game everything else comes second.

If the current poll results are any indication, it's not even a contest at this point. Gameplay is the main priority for a video game, fighting or otherwise.

That said, a good story can greatly increase immersion. Knowing who the characters are, their reasons for fighting, and seeing them progress in their individual quests creates attachment, and gives us something to talk about aside from combos and frame data (no offense intended). Honestly, if I didn't know anything about the characters, I don't know if I would've stuck with the series as long as I did.

Unfortunately, I don't think SC has been particularly good at storytelling. Only part of the cast has actual relevance in the overarching story, while others are just... there. The games rarely show the characters interacting, aside from specific endings and cutscenes (most of which aren't even canon). The bulk of the story is otherwise told via descriptions and narrative exposition, which breaks the pacing and shatters the illusion of being actually inside the world, watching events unfold (or, in the case of video games, actually playing a role in these events).

Although SCV's presentation is pretty lackluster, it's also the first game in the series that actually tried to tell a deeper story about the world and its characters. And I think it's a step in the right direction to actually do justice to the cast. I can only hope that Project Soul has learned from SCV and will give us an actual, immersive tale of souls and swords in the next game.

well you're polling on 8wayrun.com.. and not something like gamefaqs.

Its going to be slightly competitive player biased.
Story wise, they just need to sell why character X is fighting character Y, rather than try to build up an elaborate backstory about a character's journey to meet soul edge and just have them fight random 8 characters along the way.

I don't want to read a wall of text of meaningless fluff and then find out I have to defeat an arbitrary opponent just so I can read another wall of text to fight another arbitrary opponent.

SC5's approach with 1 main story line (10-12 fights using the main characterss) should be supplemented with mini-side stories (3-4 fights) from the unused characters.

Game play obviously; Soul Calibur is a fighting game; not a story book nor a movie.

What makes game play great? Good replay value; not playing it for one time and putting it back on the shelf or trading it in.

you want to enjoy a story with no gameplay, read a book/comic/visual novel or go watch a movie, simple as...
Actually there is one video game I know that is heavily story-oriented and offers very little game play or none.

I can only think of one that is Walking Dead; not sure if there are more games like this, but it's like one of the novels where you get to choose your own adventure through multiple choice.

well walking dead, heavy rain, Asura's Wrath, all of 'em feature more story related elements than actual gameplay, but the point still stands that we play a fighting game to the end that 2 opponents will duke it out until "KO" is flashing on the screen

Ya I agree with that.

All I'm just say'n is that in addition to reading a book/comic/visual novel or movie, they can also play Walking Dead, Heavy Rain, Asura's Wrath.

I'm not fan of these story driven games as I prefer my games to have a lot of interaction; I mean seriously I can just watch them on Youtube and I'll be satisfied with the story.
