Is SC 4 broken?

The game does have its frustartions, especially if you don't whore a top tier, but that's similar to most fighters.

Yes the game needs some refinement, and it was released in what I now consider to be an unfinished state, but it's not as bad as most of the shovelware fighters released this decade

Namco made an enemy with me once they decided that it would be a good idea to make verts track. That, above all, pisses me off the most.

Broken? No. Frustrating? Absolutely. I find it incredibly frustrating to play against spammers and button mashers, mainly because I cannot play my normal game against them. When I am trying to do actual combos and difficult moves, they just keep throwing fast A's at me and interrupting. Now in a match against a normal player, this does not bother me, because that is what they should be doing. However most spammers and mashers are not actually doing combos and they just keep doing the same moves over, and over, and over the entire match. The annoyance then skyrockets when they start doing it with a character like Taki, who has the fastest A in the game (9 frames IIRC). You cannot grab them because at any given time they are pressing more or less all the buttons, guard impacting online is a gamble at best with lag spikes, and you are forced to just block and punish while trying to guess what direction to block (because even they don't know what they are throwing at you next).

I do really like SC4, don't get me wrong, but I also however think that button mashing and spamming can take you a lot further than it really should be able to in this game. Especially when played online.

I agree 100% with that comment. Usually after losing the first 2 rounds to a spammer i can figure out how to counter and thats what I do to beat them. But, recently on XBL I faced a player and his Gt was like: Ismaeeeeel. He was level 1 and seemed like a joke but he used default Ivy, w/ Auto Impact A. He did some attack where her sword like lashed out at me in a repeating circular pattern. It covered me at long range, short range, mid. It was impossible to sidestep because it knocked me right back down everytime I got up. I was using Yun-Seung so i didn't have the best range out there. I couldn't guard impact due to huge lag, etc. Its things like this that piss me off. And I lost the match. It just makes me want to throw my xbox out the freaking 3rd floor of my home, but what can I do?

I played Kageuchi once online. I got rolled for the first two rounds, ending in 3-1. Never seen a setsuka player online so I didn't know what to expect. He's pretty good, Setsuka's inputs are more difficult than any other character so I can see where he's coming from, but that's pretty scrub if he blames the game if he loses.

I'll say this...I'm new to SC...and nothing has convinced me so far that someone whose not fast can win in this game. Everybody keeps saying Nightmare and shit could win in 3 but that's when they had unblockables(ex. Soul Charged 1A)...I don't know about asta, but Nightmare has really nothing except the threat of ring out to scare anybody in this game. I'm not saying the game is broke, but it's extremely frustrating. In all honesty it seems like people like the sisters and Amy/Raph(yes I know they're not the same) should never lose to a NM when they can just rush them down all day. And the before everybody starts preaching about GI and stepping lets be serious...GI is a 50/50 guess most of the time unless the move's slow enough that you can react to it. My problem with Stepping is that I'm stepping Bs...and still getting hit. I think the game was originally designed so you could step B's but not A's...why in the hell are B's tracking? Maybe I'm just ranting b/c my comp is seasoned players that have been playing since like SC1, but they just keep saying switch to a fast character.

LoLz you must not have played a good nightmare.... he's very capapable of winning... maybe its not as easy as the sisters but thats how it should be hes a skill character...

Man I thought I was the only one.... SC4 is my first SC game I'm actually trying to get good at. Reading all the beginner guides and stuff, such as horizontals stops steppers, and verticals stop crouchers, I was like ok! And then I step verticals and get tracked. And then it's a counter hit too! My reaction is..... STUPID GUIDES LIED TO ME!

Well, the way I see it is that while the game does have some frustrating features and certain characters with more useful movesets than others, it's still a pretty good fighting game and I enjoy it quite a bit. I believe that for the most part, a lot of the frustrating stuff can be worked around - it's just a bit of an uphill climb depending on which character you use.

I'd rather be playing this than DOA. DOA isn't a bad game by any means, but to me that game engine moves so freakin' fast that it's hard to react to anything.

This is a typical namco game. Like Tekken and DOA, you can immediately pick up the game, beat other scrubs and as SOON as you run into an intermediate player, you will get stomped. It's as simple as that. Scrubs won't beat Vets in this game. They could in 3, not in this game.

SC 4 broken?

Ok I'm a huge fighting game fan and I finally got around to getting SC4 for the 360. I've been playing GG:AC, SSBB, DoA4, and now SC4. After playing all these it seems to me that Soul Calibur 4 is the least balanced most broken game. There are plenty of attacks that even when blocked can be spammed with very little in the way of being able to retaliate. Plenty of near infinities and infinities abound. More than aggravating is the fact that sidestepping no longer makes any sort of difference, you still get hit almost no matter what. Maybe it's because i'm coming straight from SC2 to SC4 but this game seems broken and is definitely frustrating. Especially online where while being spammed you can't even guard impact because it won't come out on time.

Not that I plan on quitting the game, i'm certainly still going to play it but Namco really needs to rethink some things here.

SC4 and all Soul Calibur (edge included) are shit easy to play. The only fighter that's easier is DOA.

But a fighter being easy to play isn't a bad thing. It just means that high level play isn't based on total execution and more scrubs mean more money at tournaments. :D

Of course lots of folks at SRK shun the easier games and that's why there are only old mother fuckers like myself that play 2D and no new blood. But if your game is easy to play more people can jump right in even after the game is seasoned into a couple years.
They could in 3, not in this game.
Holy shit! Is that why I never won a tournament in SC2 and none in SC4, but won tournaments in SC3?!!! Nooooooooooo!!! >:(

SC4 is not broken.
Your friends probably is though, getting spammed by a noob mitsurugi back to back will do that.

I'm reading a lot of posts regarding spammers, people not being able to react to stuff and "infinites". I'd just like to stop a moment and ask how many of these problems have their root in playing the game online?

I recently went back to online to try and refresh my memory on how bad it actually is. Asides from not being able to perform my moves half the time, the one time I did manage PO 236 B the whole room erupted into fits of "WTF! OMG WTF WAS THAT SHIT!". They had never seen it before you see and they thought it was a glitch... Oh and also there was a Setsuka who killed everybody with one move over and over. I tried getting up into a block and no, I could not block that thing for shit, even that was too slow. It was also pretty apparent most of the people playing just spam combos and count on you not being able to react with the lag window. So how did I finally start winning? I did a lot of lows and when I knocked people down I did throws half the time and b's the other half of the time. I did this on like, 5 people in a row and suddenly couldn't lose a round. I know they knew I was gonna throw them when I was running up against them for a solid second but t'weren't jack they could do about it. The only way to avoid a throw like that for me was to duck before my opponent even got into throw range. It's like playing the game by e-mail or something. If that's your only experience of the game it's really, really going to be a bad one.

Also course your friends are gonna say the game's broken... if you kick their butt 50 times in a row. I remember the sc II days, I'd kill my friends all afternoon and they'ed call any character i was using broken. Then they'ed pick Taki or Cass or Nightmare or whoever I was using and try to show me how broken that character was and fail horribly. Then it was that only I knew the glitches... Even when I'd pick the exact same character they were using and GI everything they threw at me they couldn't admit I was better, it was always that something was wrong with the game. In short, your friend is just trying to console his ego.

One more thing about online, a lot of people have lousy attitudes.

CY I've only read the thread title and I wanted to tell you to stop making stupid threads v_v

If you read the approximately 2 seconds of text you'd see he probably just wanted to have enough people confer with him that he could show his friend the thread to stop his complaining.

I still think it's a stupid thread, and I doubt his friend (who isn't his friend anymore sounds like from my skimming) would bother to look here even if told to. Sounds like he's done and can't be persuaded otherwise
