Kayane's Video Interview with Tago-san!

As you know by now, Kayane had some hands-on time with Soul Calibur V at GamesCom in Cologne, Germany. In addition to the chance to be the first person outside of Namco to ever play the game, she also managed to snag an interview with the producer of the Soul Calibur series: Hisaharu Tago!
In the interview, Kayane and Tago talk a bit more specifically on Namco's future interest with the tournament community, including patching, arcade editions and how they will try to listen to the players. Tago also specifically calls out Hilde's "Doom Combo" as a point of shame for them in Soul Calibur IV. Kayane asks a lot of specific questions about returning characters: Tira, Maxi and Voldo.

Also... if you look carefully at the video, you can see 32 slots for characters!

It's true that tira's style changes do seem to be a little random and can mess up your initial tactics but that's the skill that's involved with playing with her. You have to be able to change your plans in a split second. but I agree on the gloomy/emo side that makes you loose health for a lot of moves. most of her good moves in the gloomy state require you to give up some health.

P.S. is it me or does no one like Pyrrah. I haven't seen any game play of her since the second trailer that came out of SCV and it was a teaser. Yeah they had that other one but it wasn't a real fight. They were explaining mechanics. You get to see real game play for all the other characters including some in this video. Man, I want my Alexandria descendant in action dammit!

Yeah, I agree with you for the most part. But even though it is apart of her as a character [random personality swaps], I still think she needs at least one move that guarantees the personality switch. It should be a BE-able move as well and should only switch her personalities when the move's used as a BE so it'll cost somethin' to switch purposely.

I personally didn't mind the self damagin' moves, but I hated how her combo damage scaled to the point where she's almost doin' as much damage to herself as she's doin' to her opponent. That's a flaw to me. But I still think her self damagin' moves weren't that bad...Though I do think they need to be coupled with JF moves that regenerate her life back, Yoshi style.

Also, here's a vid that features a match between Voldo and Pyrrah:

The one when she fights Voldo, posted above, is a nice demonstration of her fighting :)

ah thank you. it is a nice demonstration. It seems like she has those lag lows that sophitia has too though. not to excited about facing her online. but other wise she looks cool in my book.

Hmmm....I just noticed around 1:43 in this vid, Pyrrah does a JG on Voldo's new low, but she's standin' while doin' it. Kayane already confirmed that you have to press 1G to block lows, so I'm not worried about JG bein' an all purpose attack blocker like the new GI. I just hope that they change the animation so you can actually see them JGing a low attack, and be in a crouch position afterwords.

32 characters! Damn!!!!!!!!!! 16 new characters and 16 old characters Shit i can't wait to this game to come out. why 2012???????????????????????!!!!!!!!

As far as Tira's balance: I was among the no self-damage crowd at first but I've decided I want them to stick with this concept and put some real thought into it. She has beastly potential. The self-damage has to be in places that make sense. Why GS 22A? The damage doesn't warrant it since other characters have moves that serve the same purpose but get much better reward without any risk. Same with the mood changes. But I won't go into any further specifics here. If Daishi is truly listening through Twitter then I will post to the wishlist I keep getting PM'ed about.

there is no way they are gonna design 12 new characters and have them balanced by summer next year, let alone all the old characters that they will need to tweak. the game is either gonna get delayed or we're gonna get rushed half-hearted attempts at character design and balance.

calling it now: game is gonna be in a horrible state at launch, because namco is going to put game balance on the backburner and rely on post launch patching to get the job done

Bullshit. Many of us will love and play it for a very long time. C:

sounds like MK but MK is a very simpistic game that only has a few moves per character that aren't shared. God i hate how lacking in depth MK is, rant over.

I'm loving the Voldo footage in both videos... Moves they took away in sc2/sc3 are back for sc5 ~ I'm lovin' it =)

I hate to agree, but I can't see Namco giving us all of this. Maybe they will go the Capcom route. Come out with Soulc Calibur 5 - Super Soul Calibur 5 LOL.

While this is probably true... so what?

SC4 was literally broken beyond belief at 1.00, Ivy Infinite, Voldo 80% combos, Hilde Charge Timers tied to EACH BUTTON...

How about other competitive games? Starcraft has OPEN BETAS and the game is still broke as shit at launch and requires some time in the wild to be patched. WoW Arena constantly undergoes patches to tweak it's balance and was overwhelmed with OP stupid tactics on launch.

It's not like anyone really counts the competitive results in the first month anyways due to the impossible hurdle of "character/gimmick" ignorance... so that doesn't much matter.

The fact of the matter is, why does it matter if it's broken on launch? That is pretty much the norm now. We don't live in 2000 anymore where we get what we get when it drops on console and nobody has a high speed internet connection.

EVEN IF they for the most part ignore balancing until after the game has launched (they have to have at least some balancing so the game is at least playable), I still doubt they can come up with 12 new, well-designed character concepts by summer of next year. As far as bad character design concepts (I hope they dont poop out 12 generic anime stereotypes instead of actually being creative) and poorly designed/uninspired movesets, those arent really things that I see them being able/willing to fix with patches. I doubt they'll have time to refine all the returning character's movelists either.

I don't like how game companies do business nowadays. There is no possible way that Odashima and co. have the type of drive and fire for the series that they should have (and that is necessary to deliver the type of quality game that the community is seeking) when they are working 5-6 days a week doing 12-14 hour days.

Even Blizzard's vice president of creative development, Chris Metzen, has openly admitted to losing the fire and the drive after a while working on something, and Blizzard is well known for their policy of "release the game when it's ready", giving their employees ample time to work on their projects.

I might be digressing a little bit here, but the few puzzle pieces that Namco is throwing us don't seem to form a pretty picture so far. I'll admit that this is for the most part needless worrying, but Namco sure could do a better job keeping us more involved and easing our concerns.

...and we have every right to be concerned after all the problems that SC3 and SC4 had.

Info corner

Daishi was a SC1 playa and others on Project Soul (or Namco) have been playin SC since then.

Many of us at 8WR have been playin the game many years and are still lovin it (and haven't gotten bored).

Doin what you love may just add fuel to the fire.

Workin long hours and doin OT (overtime) is usual in Japan (in many fields).

I think the playas are involved in this game A LOT more than they/we have in the past-
There have been many interviews where we actually could ask Qs and get answers (Kayane has had 2 already).
And the constant Twitter (believe me the JP playas are also grillin em- I've seen Qs from our own oosaka and Sousuhi (both SBO playas)).
Namco didn't do anything like that for the other SC games.

I was actually pondering about this very thing the other day. How complete will the game be at launch? But it actually might be more complete then we assume. They've suggested that they already know what cast they are working with for the most part. So there actually may be quite a few characters we haven't seen who are fully designed. With returning characters they seem to be starting from the SC4 iteration and then editing from there. This shaves off a ton of time.

We're only getting a little bit at a time but there is probably a lot going on that we haven't seen yet. They are probably only showing us what is the most solid right now. Like even if they haven't created new designs for some of the returning cast they may have already started working on their move list. This is just my speculation.
