Perhaps the whole unisex things were for testing purposes? Maybe they're going to make everything -technically-unisex. By which I mean, either gender can equip anything however, certain things are only selectable for both genders... Does that make sense?
Perhaps I should elaborate further. Clearly, I am not the best with words. Basically, the game engine is coded to allow any character to have any and all armor equip-able, but the game itself only allows the player to select certain armor peices chosen by the developers to be usable for either gender, so as to allow for more variability in armor choices without having to make duplicate armor pieces for the opposite gender.
