Soul Calibur 5 Guest/Bonus/CAS Character Discussion

I don't want him to think (specifically our community) as spammers and intolerant elitist.

We should - at worse - advise that it would not be a good thing to divert resources into producing gimmicky guest characters at the expense of catching bugs, reducing imbalances, and reducing general fun-ness.

I don't know... if the game includes all of the original characters and a few new ones, why not add a guest character? Guest characters have always been a Soul Cal thing, anyway. No other fighting game does it, as far as I know.

As long as they focus on the more important issues FIRST, I see no harm in adding a guest character to the roster.

Star Wars guest characters were the main reason I got the game 2+ years ago...
Vader in a fighting game = EPIC WIN!!! (He the ring out king! Hilde's the Queen lol!)

That being said, it would make me happy if he would have been a permanent character in SC, but he's just a guest, so oh well, I wonder who's gonna be my new fav character now...

@DeathInMyEyes
The new Mortal Kombat, Netherealm Studios is working on, is going to have Kratos as a character on the PS3, other than that, I can't think of any other game that has a guest character in their roster.

Well nobody does it like Soul Calibur at any rate. I mean there is a Kratos appearance coming to Mortal Kombat and Dead or Alive did once feature a visit from The Master Chief (or an aproximation there of). That said it's really gotten to the point that people expect it of SC. Which is a little sad, really, but I guess it's an additional credit Namco can add to their calling card that keeps the casuals buying and the series continuing.

As for guest characters I'm of two minds. They do keep people's interest and generate sales hype but they denigrate the series in their own way. Sometimes they put a good deal of thought into a guest like Spawn or The Apprentice and it seems a shame because the same resources could have went towards the purpose of creating a new and permanent face for the roster. I guess guest skins are a bit of a better idea, but can we have some standards? Like if your "mangaka" hands you a fanciful elf you hand him back his pencil and paper and say "Try again.".

Also Guts. Please Guts. Come on already. Manga artists and you skip Miura? Namco. Guts. GET.

That's what I'm saying. If they add a few new characters, return all of the previous cast (minus the previous guests), fix any problems SC4 had, and make an overall fun game FIRST, I don't see how a guest character could be a bad thing if they add one in afterwards.

Basically, if they have finished the game plan and have time and money left over, what harm could a guest character do?

It'd be shame if they discarded all the work they did with Vader and Apprentice. They could re-use them to make some new characters... like some highlander or a viking with Vader's moves (minus force) or some Persian/middle-eastern/Indian prince with Apprentice's moves.

One type of guest character that I think is a good idea- was Yoshitora from Samsho 5.

An original character who fit into Samsho, created by the guy who did Rurouni Kenshin (who was a huge SamSho fan)

I don't know if any manga-ka are huge Soul Calibur fans. I know Virtua Fighter has Jyoji Morikawa (Ippo).

I wouldn't be opposed to re-using some of Vader's or Apprentice's moveset in a new character, but I'd want the character to look like he fit in the series. In SC4, only Shura to me really looked like she really fit in the series.

Never understood how another character with the same moveset was a good thing, i mean im all for new costumes, but thats what the CaS mode is for... As for guests, I think it would be a shame to waste all the work they've put into the Star Wars characters, and they should continue with that theme as a basis for guest characters. I mean they didnt do the story particularly well in SCIV, but itd be a bit weird to just forget about it.

For example, I'd like to see Qui-gon-Jin, if only because they made a big deal of him returning from the "nether-world of the force" or whatever, then left him out of the big scene at the end of Return of the Jedi... Just seems unfair is all. Also Darth Maul...

I like Qui-Gon Jinn but he's weaksauce combat-wise.

BTW - WHY THE HELL THEY DIDN'T ADD LUKE!? Why Yoda and Vader? That was so stupid... They should have added Vader and Luke. That would have been epic...

Ha! Exactly! Now that may have been actually cool.

1. Luke is not 2 inches tall... ergo no more "I can't hit you" BS.
2. Mark Hamel loves doing V.O. work. Hahaha, ok that was a joke reason.
and
3. Luke doesn't rely on force powers... ergo a more interesting two handed sword style rather than jumpy jumpy rolly force occasional swing of saber medley of awfulness lol.

Whew... that was my rantiest/nerdiest post to date.

SC doesn't need anymore guest characters. I think the original roster is fine, maybe improve the way the character creation works. It would be cool to design my own Algol. On to a better note. If there was to be guest characters in SC5, It'd have to be someone would bring something new to the table. Like Heihachi didin SC2. he wasn't the greatest, but you get my point. I would go with Albert Wesker from the Resident Evil series. Everyone loves a bloodthirsty superhuman. XD

@AmysDivineWrath I'm sure if they include Algol in the new game, he'll not be the main boss, so he'll have a new, customisable look... However I'm still all for guest characters, don't know what you mean when you say Heihachi was something new, Tekken *cough* *cough*, but yeah, you get my point. Wesker... Care to explain how he's going to fit in anyway but worse with the existing
cast?

As I said they've already put lots of effort into the lightsaber forms for SCIV, (which is something new, for SC) it'd be a shame to waste it. And also I'd say the reason they didn't have Luke is that Yoda, Vader and Starkiller could all come from the same timeline, whereas Luke is several years younger then Starkiller at this point and more importantly not yet a Jedi.

And less of this talk against Qui-Gon, Qui-Gon will do fine *waves hand*

You're definitely right about Luke vs Vader though, could've been pretty epic, but nothing I haven't seen a plenty of times before
when I was younger, Yoda vs Vader on the other hand... Also, Darth Maul...

Sorry to have hit your soft spot for Qui-Gon Jinn there!

Yeah, Darth Maul would be cool as well but Yoda...

This one fits this game not. Yes, hmmm.

And yes, Vader vs Luke seems too obvious but who cares? It would have been the best choice. No use in experimenting. They should have given us this two most iconic Star Wars chars if they really had to add SW chars at all.

If there would have to be a Star Wars character, then I'd like it to be Chewbacca. Calibur purists could imagine it to be some yeti or sasquatch.

why would a yeti or a sasquatch fit in the calibur universe?

lol if this is a troll post then good job

lol i never understood why guest characters were needed in a game like this. I think they should just stick with the core members and if any characters should be added, it should be anyone from Soul blade to Soul 4. Nothing more. No link, No Spawn, Nobody....

In all seriousness, if they have to add a bonus char, there's only one right choice and somebody talked about it already - Gattsu!!!

Hmmm, not much of a mystery there, guests sell, sometimes, like the SW characters, it's another game, but in all fairness that game was alright and it can work both ways. But out of curiousity, who did you have in mind that hasn't already been in SC?

But anyway I'll say it again, why waste all that perfectly good effort with SW stuff, especially now when the license needs a decent revival, the only new SW game I can think of, (decent SW game) is an MMO ill never play... Liked what Force-Destruct said, they could add lightsaber forms to the CaS mode too...

All this ranting how they need to focus on the core cast, c'mon, they've had several games to get their fightinig styles done already, SCV should be little more then polish and balancing in that respect... Plenty of room for guests, SW or not, when we get more good ideas, we could make a poll so we have something Namco could take a look at...
