So I get that you guys really dislike the Church and in that point we are in agreement, but what do you think about the Bible itself?[/quote

well no point most people never opened the book...When you finish the new testament it gives you hope I guess. The gospel of John is by far the best one. Also a lot of stuff that church is doing is the opposite of what Jesus did .

I have a question~ I hope it can be answered...and I hope you all are not offended.

-Why did you people decide to become an Atheist/Agnostic/Theist?
-If you found out God was real when you died, what would you do?
-Do you hate God/Jesus, or against the whole corrupt idea of religion?
- Do you hate/dislike people who have a belief in God?
-Lastly, what do you think of Jesus?

Just to let you all know Im not trying to provoke! Im just curious in your responses. I hope Im not offending in any way and if you perfer not to answer I will respect that. m(_ _ m)
1. because i won't be part of any group who believe child molesting priests, money-worshiping televangelists, and pastors in $2,000 suits are the intermediaries between me and God, and because of the vicious absurdity of the bible, which condones murder as a suitable punishment for homosexuality, adultery, shaving, hair cutting, women speaking out in public, and eating shellfish, then commands "thou shalt not kill". oh, and because it sanctions slavery and animal sacrifices, and calls crippled or mentally retarded people "unclean" in the eyes of God.

2. expect to be rewarded for being true to myself instead of "believing" in Him just to try to avoid hell. and for never killing, raping, enslaving, abusing, or intentionally harming anybody.

3. i dislike religion in general; i view all of them as a tool for manipulative schemers to control minds and coax obedience and wealth from the gullible, and to eliminate dissenters. i hate the god described in the Old Testament...murderous, jealous, easily provoked to wrath, abusive to his most loyal servants, and easily fooled by satan (see the story of Job). the God Jesus speaks of seems much more loving and void of the human flaws of the Old Testament god.

4. i pity most who believe in a god. brainwashed souls frightened into believing a bunch of ridiculous fairy tales that no sane human would pay any mind to. that includes ALL religions, not just christianity. i do have hatred for some people of faith, namely those who persecute, harm, and/or oppress others in the name of their religion.

5. if Christians and their churches actually governed themselves according to Jesus' ACTUAL teachings (the words in red) i would probably be one. unfortunately, THOSE teachings (humility, charity, pacifism, unconditional love from God and among all people, service to the poor and the "least among us", forgiveness for all who repent, rejecting greed and corruption) don't seem to be very popular ones. apparently dictating government policy, forcing prayer in schools, encouraging AIDS and overpopulation by forbidding contraception, attacking minorities, warmongering, and amassing obscene amounts of wealth is the name of the game for most "Christian" organizations.

I don't think that it's at all credible. The contradictions between the New and Old Testament are so conspicuous, and "in your face".

Also the bible wasn't even written by god so who's to say it's god's word anyway?

Well to me you seem brainwashed, Typical Atheist always criticize the church... The Church is nothing. Becoming an atheist because you don't like what the church is doing is just stupid. Like Jesus said your religion should be between you and your God XD. Btw a lot of stuff in the bible have been proven... all the kings of the old testament are real... the great temple that the Jewish had build is still here( what's left of it ). Pontius Pilate the one who had condemned Jesus is still in old roman archives... And you didn't understand the story of Job XD. Well most Atheist don't fully understand the bible, I was exactly like you before it takes some smart thinking to understand it. And you know what's funny even Jesus warned us about fake preachers who doing evil.

What contradictions they complete each other... all the old prophecies about the messiah coming Thousand of years before Jesus where accomplish... Before I speak of science, I try to understand it before you should do the same :) when you speak of the bible.

No it's not stupid. Throughout the 20th and 21st century, Church / Religion has become more intertwined with State which should not happening. Who decided that religion should become a corporate thing?

Anyway this website http://truth-saves.com/ reveals why the bible is unreliable, and not real. Here are a few false prophecies made BY the bible.

Isaiah 17:1
"An oracle concerning Damascus: See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins."
FAIL: Damascus is still inhabited today with well over a million people and there was never a time where it ceased to be a city. It is widely known as being the oldest continuously inhabited city in the world.

Isaiah 19:4-5 "I will hand the Egyptians over to the power of a cruel master, and a fierce king will rule over them, declares the Lord, the LORD Almighty. The waters of the river will dry up, and the riverbed will be parched and dry."
FAIL: The river mentioned here is the Nile which never dried up and is still one of Egypt's greatest natural resource.

c
isaiah.jpg

Isaiah 52:1 "Awake, awake, O Zion, clothe yourself with strength. Put on your garments of splendor, O Jerusalem, the holy city. The uncircumcised and defiled will not enter you again."
FAIL: There are still uncircumcised people living in Jerusalem even today.

d
nebuchadnezzar.jpg

Ezekiel 30:10-11 "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will put an end to the hordes of Egypt by the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon. He and his army - the most ruthless of nations - will be brought in to destroy the land. They will draw their swords against Egypt and fill the land with the slain."
FAIL: Ezekiel predicts that Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon will conquer Egypt utterly destroying it, slaying and scattering its people. Nebuchadnezzar killed many Egyptians and even the Egyptian king Necho II during a battle in Carchemish, but he never conquered Egypt. Nebuchadnezzar attempted conquering Egypt in 601 BCE and failed. In 568 BCE he tried again but Egypt still survived and the pharaoh Amasis II continued his reign from 570 until 526 BCE.
Egypt was conquered by the Nubian King Piy in 728 BCE, the Persians in 525 BCE, and Alexander the Great in 332 BCE. Never by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar.

e

Ezekiel 29:10-11 "therefore I am against you and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt a ruin and a desolate waste from Migdol to Aswan, as far as the border of Cush. The foot of neither man nor beast will pass through it; no one will live there for forty years."
FAIL: Never in its long history has Egypt been uninhabited for forty years.

Matthew 16:28 "I tell you the truth, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom." 23:36 "I tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation." 24:34 "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened."
FAIL: Jesus states in Matthew that all the signs marking the end of the world would be fulfilled before his generation ended, before the people that were standing infront of him "taste death." Those people have been dead for over 2000 years and the world did not come to an end, neither have all those signs been fulfilled.

Secondly Terminator here are a plethora of contradictions between the new and old testaments http://jeromekahn123.tripod.com/newtestament/id19.html

Well I fear that the main problem with Atheist is that they condemn God because they think that all institutions praising him are not following his preaching. Well stop listening to others and read the bible... Jesus never spoke about forcing you to join a church to believe in him...Jesus never spoke about hating homosexual's, Jesus never said that you should be killed for doing this or that. So all atheist here believing in God has nothing to do with the Church.

Oh the irony.

The majority of Christians are hypocrites, and it all goes back to "Christianity 101" - Thou shalt not judge, and love thy neighbor yet homosexuality is incessantly condemned by myriads of Christians today, and have the nerve to judge us because our acts are supposedly "sinful" yet they don't actually know who we are.

If this is what Christianity makes people become

Then frankly I want nothing to do with a religion like this. Moreover there are numerous branches of Christianity such as Jehovah Witness, and Seventh Day Adventist which contradict each other which just proves the internal conflict of Christianity within its own communities. Quite baffling.

Well these are false Christians and I dislike them as much as you do but you shouldn't condemn the religion because of thoses clowns. I feel your hate for Christianity but it's not the religion that's evil it's the people manipulating followers and changing its words that are. Islam is a beautiful religion but I completely dislike how the extremist treat their woman and how they do mass murder in the name of Allah.

Well The bible is an old book of course a bunch of thing are going to be contradicting each other it was written by a bunch of people and it was translated in different languages by hand. But the important are all completing each other.

No sir. Your beliefs are no better than those of any others. You don't like anyone telling you your beliefs are wrong? Ever thought everyone else feels the same way? You can't say you hate something, do that very thing, and not be a hypocrite. Your preaching is distilled arrogance and hypocrisy, the very things you're claiming your beliefs trasncend.

1. Didn't decide. I was never pushed into religion when young and never convinced later.

2. Would I have a body? What sort of things could I do? Dunno, I'd just roll with it from there.

3. It would be absurd to hate things you don't think exist. Hate religion? Some of them.

4. I dislike many religious people.

5. He's attributed with some good sayings.

Well :) i taught this thread was about learning about each other. I'm not forcing my beliefs on anyone, it's just that some people have a bad understanding of Church and Faith. They are two seperate things. Church comes from Man and Faith comes from God. Instead of trying to contradicting me in my beliefs, and telling the bible is not a valid source of faith when obviously you don't understand it's purpose, you should be sharing your doubts and what made you an Atheist. Like I said before, I enjoy Ateist people, some of my good friends don't believe in anything but we still have interesting conversation about our beliefs. I learnfrom them and they learn from me

Faith comes from man.

Our entire world is built on faith.

Our thoughts are built on faith (every thought and we have goes through the emotional parts of the brain before going to the logical parts. It's NEVER the other way round).

Faith is about emotions. Humans are primarily emotional creatures. Therefore faith will always be here.

The debates about what is Christian and what is un-Christian, what is religious and what is un-religious is futile. It is belief that runs this world. Everybody believes in something. The core value of morals is belief.

Wait... what was the point of this thread?

Chicken and egg paradox, lol. Thing is, to even begin to question/study the phenominon, science is the answer. Religion's answer 'god did it' does not even begin to cover any ground at all.

Furthermore, in society we take the following stance with theories: denied until proven, I say again, proven true. That does not work the other way around.
Here's a working example:
I come home from work to find my family have disappeared and I believe it to be the work of aliens. I then write a book without any documented proof at all of said aliens and two thousand years later, half the planet is at war with each other over which alien is better and how our lives/lifestyles apparrently matter to the beings that were never proved to even exist.

Of course that wouldn't happen as today, we are lucky enough to be able to think much more freely and I would just be called a madman and put in a padded room somewhere. Christianity, Judaism, Islam etc etc should not get a free ride in this matter, but they do, on the basis that they've always been here. To Americans who fought in the civil war, slavery had always been there.
Religion is not as benevolent as it is preached to be, certainly not christianity at least. Some of the most oppressed people in the world are deeply religious per head (see uganda, serbia, etc etc) as religion always has been a method of controlling the masses, a cynic like me would say that is what caused it to be in the first place, but we can take from the pagans who built stonehenge that worship was taking place before such a tool was needed. On the other hand, some of the happiest nations in the 1st world, Finland for example have very little if any worship in their communities.
And of course, it is the last refuge of socially acceptable prejudice. A priest can condemn a gay man or woman for being who they are and if made public, debate ensues. If a random member of the public did so, it would be a hate crime.

In short, religion to me symbolises everything that is wrong with the world today and as a society we are smart enough by now to have our own morality to not need guidance from a 2000 year old story book, much less one that has caused more human deaths than any other cause in human history. I don't just mean the bible, I mean all religious text. Religion always has had an agenda of its own, it always will and the sooner we all open our eyes and drop it, the sooner we can progress as a society. Scientifically, we are nigh on 1000 years behind our potential purely for this reason.

/rant

Well I agree with you in every point except that religion isn't the problem, the problem is mass religious instutions trying to force people to accept their beliefs has the only truth. The only way we can avoid religious conflict is too keep our beliefs to ourselve like Canada is doing in the public sector. Society should be anti-religious.

Well till anything can prove me that evolution is the answer than forget abouty beliefs. Sadly the big bang can't explain same goes for evolution.
