Why are you good?

All that means is that it's not meaningful unless people agree with a viewpoint. But, such a dynamic can change easily. And if it's all perception, then it's just a game of rationale and persuasion.

You're good when people say you are. It doesn't matter what you achieve. It doesn't matter how much skill you think you got...you're only as good as people say you are. It's relative. lol
But that depends on the type of audience. If it's just a circle of friends, online spectators (XBL & PSN) and/or anyone with no experience or lack thereof in tournies & gatherings, then I wouldn't take info from those group of ppl.

I say sum1's ability to adapt as well as having a vast knowledge of characters as well as different play-styles is what makes the player good. Players who place themselves to the top demonstrate such. They are exposed to different characters and play styles from many battles in tournaments and gatherings.

And so you believe your experience as an offline player qualifies you to judge the skill of any player?

If this is what you believe your vastly mistaken. The skill of an individual can't be measured simply. The possibility of some no name individual showing up to any random gathering or tournament and completely destroying these top players you mention is always highly possible.

Where you stand, a player must pass the test of tournaments to be considered good. From where I stand a good player is a good player, whether offline or online, whether I know of him or not.

It's relative.

chaos no offense but... what the hell is the purpose of this thread? or rather, what the hell is the purpose of all your threads? all you've been doing is opening up more discussions -__- a never ending cycle of arguments, actually they ended pretty quick (they were closed) what the hell do you care what people think anyway, just shut up and play the game and like some say "let your characters do the talking" like nofzcekiller said himself go to evo and talk all you want there

Nope, I wasn't judging anyone by any means or at least I wasn't trying to. However, there are offline players who are too quick to judge.

This isn't in fact who should judge who. It's based on what's proven.

Well it depends who I consider top players. I haven't mentioned names but at least from my perspective I'm not looking at American tournaments alone.

But yes your last sentence in that quote is correct. Ppl like Omega, Kura, SU etc. ppl who we haven't heard of at that time has PROVEN as such as, but only as individuals.

Yes I stand where I stand. While I do agree there are good players out there the question is how do you prove it? How do we know that this individual is exceptionally good? How can we tell if Babalook, Freaky-Styley, Tidal-Leaf (online individuals) are gonna do well offline?

Even if the player is good at both online and offline that's just an extension of himself/herself. You can have good adaptation and mind games and such, but that applies only to a different game.

Imagine if the whole forum were a bunch of believers then there's no point in going to tournaments defeating the purpose of this community forum.

I just wanted to hear peoples opinion on the subject.

Yes.

Also there isn't a significant correlation between having a high IQ and being good at fighting games.

Smart people can be bad at a lot of things and they can also make dumb mistakes. I just made one in a debate on another forum. I said something I know was wrong to be obnoxious, thought It wasn't a good idea right after, but the other guy caught it before the edit and I got hammered for it. Lesson learned, gg.

No Chaos, you want the same thing you've always wanted with each thread you make. Someone to tell you these exact lines.

"You're the best motherfucking player ever. I bow to you. We're truly not worthy. People undervalue your skill because you use algol, while using less than questionable tactics online. I say these people are just jealous, and sore losers who fail to give you the recognition you so rightly deserve. You won so you're rightly the better player; that's all that matters. The outcome is you're a winner Chaos and a bloody good one at that, and that means you're the best. Keep doing what you do man, don't let these haters get you down."

There...you may retire.

Good players win a lot
Better players win a lot against players who also win a lot
Even better players win a lot against players who win a lot against other players that win a lot

@Ghengis: Yeah, unfortunately most people still see being intelligent as an "Either you are or aren't" kind of thing. Being "good" at a specific FG or FGs in general similarly isn't black/white imho.

it doesn't matter if you're black or white

*Plays the electric guitar*

Wou that's my Jam!

You wanna know how you're good? By not sucking

Wtf is this IQ shit and video games, you can be dumb as shit but still pwn in videa games, or be smart as fuck and suck at videa games.

When it boils down to it, being good at all fighting games (balanced or not) comes from two situations, how fast you can read your opponent/react (yomi) and how well you know the mechanics of the game (jf's, crossovers, the paper/rock/sisscors of the game, etc.)

You got your answers now.
