Nationals: What Went Right/Wrong

ok ok...i know some of the things went pretty badly in regards to the pots or whatever ..dfg will have to answer to those questions..i have no idea i was staff for the event. Some of the things you guys are complaining about is ridiculous if not down right stupid. Saying there was no food available except the "candy" man is just plain dumb the school has a cafeteria with taco bell subway and some other shit..and if worst comes to worst you ever heard of ordering something? It was too loud? you couldn't hear the game..u serious its a video game EVENT featuring SC4 of course there was other shit going on nvga wouldn't have been able to throw such a lavish event if it weren't for other people showing up ..all around gamers like myself and the anime people. if it was just up to the SC community to provide the funds i doubt it would have been done the way it was. I agree the techno was annoying the go go dancer was pathetic i even brought in music for the dj to play but he refused. You guys play a video game that runs at 60 fps and has tons of flashing lights but are complaining about lights in the background? that seems more than a little nit picky to me. I played in 2 tournaments that weekend none of em so caliber and the lights didn't bother me at all nor did the lack of sound..or sound being muted by the various other noises and announcements.

don't act like ungrateful shits i personally picked up several players and took them to various places ..hotels ..restaurants picking them up from the airport allowing them to leave personally belongings in my car so that they knew where they were. i highly doubt mr. wizard will see to it that people get from the airport to his venue... from what i hear and understand is that supercon was scheduled b4 evo.but this isn't about evo.

as far as SC4 not being the center piece if i remember correctly all of the other fighting games were shut down during SC grand finals...immediately after the finals were over they started the next SC tournament not to mention there were 2 other grand finals that happened after that. the non SC players supported the SC finals but they didn't receive that same respect when it was time for their finals.

immediately after the finals were over they started the next SC tournament
Even if they DID want to start the next tourney, why were the finals delayed such a long time? It was almost 8pm at that time. I can speak for a lot of people who were prepared to start at 10am, only to start at 12:30pm and to START another at 8pm was silly. So of course, we wanted to play the next day, Sunday.

-Techno music and strobe lights are indeed distracting in a tournament. I can totally understand for people yelling and talking shit behind me, but like you said, you tried to suggest other music and it didn't happen.

-I think you were the guy who drove Agustin around and let him have his stuff in your car, and I know he was really appreciative. I'm sure you helped out lots of people, but 1 person can only do so much when you have 60+ people there and most are from out of town. Lots of us had different people help us, or got zero help at all.

Gonna keep comments to myself, thanks for making this great gamming experience possible, keep it up, at least i met with some old friends, from last trip to nats, and made new friends, damm alcohol whats tight, nori thanks for lending us your room, well guys well keep in touch, o another thing could anybody from denver please tell me what happen with lolo situation, he lost his flight, please somebody let me know when you read this.

ZAS low tier, YEA RIGHT.

Soo who did oof Lose too in the Day 2 tourney!?

Thugish, RTD, French, Su fairly consistent these past events.

Thugish Omega Krayzie still Top 3 IMO

Dude I wish you would quit mentioning me. It's nice and all but seriously, the days when I was actually good are long gone. I am human excrement in SC4. Pop Ceirnian, KDZ, or Something-Unique in there in my place and your personal top 3 ranking should be cool.

Now that's just unfair to them, because KDZ is better than both of those people.
You give those two false hope.

Also, the Sunday tournament shouldn't count in anyone's book and/or heart.

That sunday tournament was hella grimy and suspect, one unpatched console no-one caught during tourney play, people who paid not being put in (like KDZ <-- got in by luck, Link, AlphaMale), done in some tiny back-room (NVGA CHAMPIONSHIPS! HA!), placing a tournament that was supposed to be a Saturday event on Sunday because of "planning malfunctions, etc etc ad infinium. Oofmatic went to losers first round, then left sick and KDZ who wasn't even allowed in the bracket (for fear of unfairness) took his place, only to eliminate Malek as a warm-up in his first match 2-0.

Dammit I'm sick of how good I am.
YJDK (You just. Don't. Know.)

ALthough i havent heard too many complaint about nationals...........Why wasnt jaxel running nationals again??
Looking at my AIM conversation logs with ChaCha... When planning for Nationals started, CF was still the centerpiece of the Soulcalibur community. The CF website started failing and I setup 8WR. Politics ensued, bad blood, and I stepped down as an admin on CF (August 7) because I didn't want to work with "those" people; thus, I essentially stepped down for running Nationals as well. ChaCha then tried to defend my actions, and the Illiniowa crew at CF pretty much outcasted him. The day after that (August 8), ChaCha decided he didn't want to run nationals either with those people either... and people accused him of "flipping out". "btw, the drama unfolding at CF is both ironic and hilarious. thanks god those dicks are being exposed for what they are." (August 18) Lol.

One issue with the food situation is that either those food places downstairs closed early or weren't open period. You could walk across campus to a few food places on Colfax nearby (A nice 15 minute walk so not terrible but still) or had to leave the campus with a ride, pay for parking (Ouch) and go find something. At least after 7 or so it was free but otherwise, you're out of luck. I'm not sure if he could have spoken with the management and been able to secure parking vouchers for attendees but if he could, that would have helped us out immensely. I'm curious how much it would've cost to hold the tourney at the hotel off I-70 and Chambers, they've held conventions there before so it was possible. Oh well.

Finding out that Joe Shmoe could pay 20 bucks to play in the National tournament makes the whole process leading up to Nationals a huge fucking joke. I would like all the money I spent going to 3 different regionals to qualify - refunded to me, please.

Fucking honestly - who cares if only 20-30 of the qualifiers showed up. You have a nationals with 20-30 people! Letting in the French team or the Koreans without having them qualify was the dumbest shit ever.

That's exactly what i was thinking since Kayane said me that the French can participate, even if i'am french, and was happy that the french can compete more, but it was a big disrespect to all the player who tried regionals.

I don't understand how DFG couldn't understand this at time.

The tournament itself deserved a good competition, but that's only for good placers and person who played at NATS, the other have fucked their money xD

The other shit all closed at 2pm or so. It was annoying, and I heard more than one person complaining about it at the event, so I brought it up. But seriously, "just order something"? GTFO. That's crap.

Really, this could've been a good chance for a business to make some easy cash. If a food sponsor, or just some food service could've been attracted, it would've been a nice. Not everyone was that eager to choke down Boba tea and some Pocky. Or to pay $6 for a repackaged bag of M&M's.

It was too loud? you couldn't hear the game..u serious its a video game EVENT featuring SC4 of course there was other shit going on nvga wouldn't have been able to throw such a lavish event if it weren't for other people showing up
The background noise was fine until they started pumping the music in. The music was distracting, and it you couldn't actually hear it over the ambient noise anyway. It didn't matter what music was being played. It just made the room extra noisy and didn't add anything to the event.

..all around gamers like myself and the anime people.
I seriously hope that Anime club poured a ton of money into the event. (Which really doesn't seem that likely on its face.) Otherwise there's no excuse for them being pimped constantly.

You guys play a video game that runs at 60 fps and has tons of flashing lights but are complaining about lights in the background?
Personally, it messes with me. Gives me a crushing headache after a while. That's not true of everyone, but it was a game tournament, not a rave no matter how you slice it. It would've been a better event without the extra sensory noise. (Especially considering that the background lights, a DJ etc probably weren't free.) If people think the event would've been better without those elements, it's probably a good idea to look at whether or not they actually added to the event or detracted from it, and plan future events accordingly.

The goal is to generate better events in the future is it not?

There is a lot I wanna say. But I wanna hear more details from those who went and most of all, I want to hear from DANCING FIGHTER G

Please make a statement NVGA staff...

Again on all those points Marginal just touched on, you have to consider this event in comparison to how Evo handled the tournaments. There were many other things going on at the time, and there were complaints about people being too close to the players and in their peripheral vision as well. But Evo did their best to address this as requested by players who spoke up about it, they didn't just brush it aside and say "deal with it." And the flashing lights would be something that would draw your attention over to them by reflex, regardless of how focused you were.

Evo staff will no doubt take all of people's comments into account and come back even better next year. Can we say the same for NVGA run events? We'll have to wait for DFG's comments on all of this, this thread should still be conducted with the purpose of CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, and hopefully it'll do some good.

I'm about to leave to the airport and for sure I can say I'm never coming back to Denver. I touched on all the things I'd like to say publicly so I'll leave it at that. I can only hope there are LOTS of improvements for next year's Nats.

I'm never coming back to Denver.

I hate to see stuff like that. It's unfortunate that our only real national tournament is run by DFG. There has been an ongoing rift between the likes of DancingFighterG tournaments, and all other local tournaments (such as Extra Fresh League Denver Tournies, various Colorado Springs tournies etc.) I was relatively new to the scene, and didn't understand why EFL boycotted DFG stuff at one point. Then this past year they said that that drama is over with, but after Supercon, I think it's back in full force and it will never go away.

I just wanna say that we have numerous local tournaments outside of NVGA/DFG that receive no complaints, where players get paid, and are never misled about payouts and brackets and such. People tend to come from out of state to some of these local tournies and are welcomed (usually we'll get at least one OOS in every other tourney; just people who are in the area, or maybe a friend of a friend from NM etc).

Please know that DFG does not represent the Colorado fighting game scene. There was a small HDR tournament for example, at Supercon, and a player from CO won that. He didn't get the $250 pot that was listed on most of the Supercon promo stuff. I guess there was fine print somewhere in that horribly-designed website that explained the intricacies of the payout, but that's just horrible crap in and of itself. This important information shouldn't be hidden away like that.

Since our local winner of the HDR tournament was not only local but knew enough to be able to confront DFG, he was able pull teeth and get some winnings, but still not $250.

In every other tournament in recent memory, run mostly by Extra Fresh I have seen no complaints. Same goes for the Colorado Springs stuff run by True Tech, and even the recent Mr. Bigg's tourney were smooth, with just plain old honest fun.

There's something like 3 tournaments that will be run this month outside of the DFGBS and I have no doubts there will be no where near the level of issues that DFG-run stuff tends to have. Hopefully one day, a different entity will be able to run a tournament of that size in CO.

I know we don't have these huge pots yet, due to less entrants, but than again, how people WEREN'T misled or underinformed about the pots of the Supercon?

Nah yo, there is no excuse for letting people in at the door after so many regional qualifiers have gone through. Of course money drives all things but this seemed like an unpleasant event made good by the players themselves and the competition they brought. I wasn't there so I can't judge, but SCIV at Evo was a great experience and all the feedback points to Nats being much less than ideal.

evo virus is what went wrong with nationals . if I were there results would be different =( Seung Cheol is also a damn strong player...

well, letting everybody in is not great if you ask me, but its even worse to change it at the last moment, first they say there will be a qualifier then they cancel it. wtf. this is strange at least.

Thank you from the NVGA

Yo, this is DancingFighterG:

Everyone involved in the NVGA cherishes the Soul Calibur Community and being able to host this national event for Soul Calibur 4 has been a blessing all the way. Thank you to all the players and people that supported the event. As the NVGA we work hard to help gamers organize there communities as well get back to more then just developing your skills in a game. We focus a lot on building friendships, uniting players for community growth and personal growth. Competitive games can help make you a better player and a better friend. Another trait that is true, but hard for people to sometimes understand, is that building a gaming community can actually help you become a better leader. As being a leader you learn a lot of things about the community that you try to cater too.

Sometimes we all take a step back to take two steps forward. Why are we saying all of this? Just like people generally improve over the course of time so is true for the NVGA. Sometimes we all take a step back to take two steps forward. Right now the NVGA has been watchful of this entire experience and overall the feedback for the event has been positive from national players and the international players.

Some of the obvious steps back were plane ticket procedures, regional’s not coming up with the needed amount of cash to fully cover the plane ticket, last place qualifiers, etc, etc. We knew that some of the regional’s may not generate enough money for an airline ticket so the NVGA covered the “gaps” of the cost in plane tickets. NVGA also covered the sizable gap in cash to guarantee the national pot money. Please remember the NVGA made no money from nationals. Players and the NVGA provided an event with the best talent EVER assembled for SC4 and did it with the love of the game and the community. As for the last place qualifier we decided that since people were dropping out of nationals left in right thus leaving people that were attending with a small bracket with openned up the national, with the votes of the community, to have one more qualifier too fill the gaps for the event. Turned out that the decision was a good one for the SC community overall.

Also players have posted other legitimate constructive ideas that have been voice, noted, and will be implemented to make a better event in the future. Ideas such as making national an open event, or changing the terminology to properly reflect what nationals has already turned into… Internationals. All this and more will be discussed and we will be adjusted.

Please also remember we truly are by the players for the players. If you don’t like something about the NVGA process then get involved on a local level. As our chapter leaders on the local level have a strong voice to help mold the NVGA. Think you can do it better? Know you can do it better? Then join up and grab your hammer and help mold a better organization, help mold the NVGA with your own local community.

We don’t want this to turn into a sales-pitch on why to start your own NVGA chapter. So we digress and will finish up with our conclusion from the experience.

We have identified ways to avoid some of the commonly voiced complaints. As we want to continue to be there to support players and their communities. We are looking to provide additional national championships for a few other games in 2010.

Again we cherish our relationship with the SC community and want to make sure we are upfront, transparent, and honest with you at all times. We have enjoyed supporting the community and providing a home for the SC National event. We have enjoyed the time we have spent helping organize such a major event and will continue to support the SC community. We are definitly wanting those locations that were regionals to be part of the NVGA in an effort to truly have consistent national events THAT REFLECT THE TOURNAMENT PLAY OF PLAYERS ALL OTHER THE NATION AND BEYOND.

We will be open to constructive criticism and constructive feedback. We will not listen to feedback that only looks to tear down our organization. As remember this organization is built by players just like you.

Overall it’s obvious the goal of getting the best players in the nation (and in the world) together for Soul Calibur was successful! The main goal was achieved. And it is a good foundation to build upon to for the future.

Shoutouts from the NVGA:

All out of country players - I hope that the staff of Colorado Cutthroat and the NVGA provide you the best experience possible in the United States. We really thank you all of you from coming from so far away to attend the SuperCon event. We will do our best to make the event even better hoping too see you again next year or even better have you play a part in the NVGA. We can talk later!! Again, thank you so much for supporting the NVGA. The NVGA will always be supportive of all international players and welcome them with open arms. See all of you soon!!

Players that attended the event - The NVGA really thank all the players that attended the event and hopefully had a good time. Expect more events and more activities from Colorado Cutthroat and the NVGA next season.

Thank you again for you opportunity.

The NVGA management team

Again, community voted on last qualifier. DFG said if more people than showed up than spots he would do the qualifier, since not even 64 people filled the tournament it's safe to say that wasn't an issue. If the community did not want this happening then everyone should have said something when the idea was first brought up with letting the french in and DFG talking about the last qualifier details. It's too late to start down this road, so talking about something else would be more constructive.
