Nationals: What Went Right/Wrong

I saw this coming along with many in the CO gaming community. DFG has ruined tourny's in CO for the last couple of years. So much in fact that many of us from CO have vowed never to attend another tourny ran by DFG. We rather have small tournies at someones house or a small venue than attend a DFG ran tourny.

CO gamers are tired of being charged insane amounts of cash for tournies that start late, have poor organization, and other factors which hurt the gaming experience. We have had this out with DFG numerous times and he never listens, his tournaments would run better if he didn't try and do everything himself. He needs competent people to help run things but he never listens. Back when coloradofusion.net was around we would have mega-threads about how bad DFG tournies were and how we all offered to help to improve them and he never listened. The only reason why many of us showed up was to support the out of staters and to see if things have changed, unfortunately things are just as bad as before.

This rant is going to make CO look bad to future out of state players but take it as a warning not to attend DFG events. If you want to game with CO players come to a local event where a majority of CO's talent will be. It may be a small tourny but it will be run a lot better than anything DFG does. DFG does not represent CO or its gamers.

To be fair there was a vote to let the french play in nationals and it was a landslide in favor of letting this happen. DFG should not be bitched out for this, he did what the community wanted. Everything else is valid though.

Finding out that Joe Shmoe could pay 20 bucks to play in the National tournament makes the whole process leading up to Nationals a huge fucking joke. I would like all the money I spent going to 3 different regionals to qualify - refunded to me, please.

Fucking honestly - who cares if only 20-30 of the qualifiers showed up. You have a nationals with 20-30 people! Letting in the French team or the Koreans without having them qualify was the dumbest shit ever.

Umm... no. The vote was to let the french play in the last QUALIFIER (that didn't happen?), not nationals itself.

Yeah. That's pretty disrespectful to anyone who travelled to regional qualifiers. But whatever... Looks like I made the right choice between going to Evo or Nats.

I wasn't involved with NVGA or SC at the tournament but wanted to say thanks and sorry for those who came from out of state and out of country! Means a lot to have you all come and play here. I wish it had gone better for you all but hope to see you guys back sometime. Met a lot of cool people, the SC community is cool.

Do you even know how many people were in nationals? DFG said he would hold a last qualifier if there were more people than spots open.

The Bad:

Plane tickets was a complete fail on so many levels. There is no excuses for how badly this shit was handeled. I was given the first place ticket from Thugish a long time ago as a method for me to make it out to the event. After hearing numerous storys about excuses related to purchasing and such I didn't recieve the ticket or info on when I was leaving until Friday night about 8 hours before I had to leave to get to the flight. Arriving at the event less than two hours before it was supposed to start. That's just an example of the numerous issues people had with the tickets.

To top things off the actual tournament did not start until like 3-4 hours later. The 2nd tournament not starting until the next day is both the fault of the competitors and the organizers. This is because the Nats tournament started extremely late and they postponed the second tournament to the following day because a number of players asked them to due to being tired. So I can't be a hypocrite and not acknowledge that this happened only because of the organizers even though they started Nats late.

Being absolutely serious what happened to the money. $2000.00 split between four does not sound or look remotely even close to being correct in terms of the money the regionals generated. Somehow I can't help but feel that due to the major errors they made with the plane tickets we were extremely short changed.
There is without question alot of shady shit going on in terms of money.

The Good:

Imo the regionals set up for people to qualify for Nats was executed more than acceptable for the most part since nothing is perfect.

A thousand props for having multiple tv's and SC games to play casuals on. This is a huge plus.

Imo based on the spirit of competition I was actually happy the french, koreans, and whoever else all had a chance to enter the tournament and compete. The community overall voted on them being accepted and thats how things went down. No need to complain here.

Perhaps even more important is that the actual competitors that were in the tournament (top players who earned there placings) didn't mind for the most part which in my eyes matters the most. We earned those spots and most if not all of us appreciated and supported the other top competitors from France, Korea, etc. having an oppurtunity to compete.

Even though I did not make it to Evo I think nats was better competitive wise because of it and some agreed with me. The brackets were entirely streamlined with top competitors all over the place. If competition means anything to a player there is no tournament that means more in terms of competition.

In the future I also hope whatever nationals we have is changed to an international tournament. For crying out loud the French openly invited us to there country to come and compete why can't we do the same. Props to the National circuit for doing that, leveling up the tournament past Evo standards competition wise.

Other stuff:

For the record I spent almost $300 going to Chicago just to qualify for the regionals and in the end I don't feel like I wasted a dime because of how competitive Nats was.

To say that Nats was nothing more than an average monthly is ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous. From my understanding of SC in the past according to things that I have been told by top competitors etc. there are only two tournaments that matter in the end.

Nats and Evo and they both delivered from what I have seen of Evo even though I didn't make that one and from what I experienced from Nats since I made that one.

These two tournaments shouldn't even been considered on the same scale whatsoever in comparison to a average monthly. You should know this Jaxel.

I'll rewrite what I wrote in the thread that u created before in which u erased my post.

At this point only the top 8 from Evo, and top 4 from Nats matters on the ranking scale. Imo I think Nats was more competive because of how streamlined the comp was but that could be up for dispute.

Also the 2nd tournament should be respected as well higher than an average monthly since that was international as well and had higher comp than ur average monthly.

Not sure who has the brackets for it but I do have the results.

1. RTD
2. Saitoh
3. Thugish_Pond
4. Something-Unique

RTD was in winners all the way through.
Saitoh beat Thugish.
Thugish beat me again (I swear i'm gonna get u one of these days Thugish if u are reading this).

All in all this tournament was alot less people because of ticket issues. However there were still a number of top competitors in this tournament all over the brackets. So it has huge value.

Other stuff:

In regards to the value of Nats and Evo. To add more insight into my point you can use any sport as an analogy.

You do good in the season to make it to the playoffs and then win the championships. Nats and Evo is no different. The season stats should be reset and only Nats and Evo results should be at the forefront. A new season starts post these tournaments until the next Nats and Evo.

As the ranking stands now its severely flawed because it attempts to clash with the above which is common sense.

Thugish deserves the nod as the best since he is the most consistent from Nats, Evo, and NVGA. There is no question about it.

Good:

-Competition level was very high
-Lots of TVs to play casuals
-When the tournament DID start, it ran fairly fast. Minus the finals, which is in the "Bad" section

Bad:

-Lots of people came in friday afternoon, or late evening. I know for a fact Cedric landed at 12am. And the tournament was supposed to start at 10. DevilJim and I pleaded for it to start at 12pm at least, but no luck. So at 10am, everybody was there. Nats started at 12:30pm. Not a single person was in a good mood, and we were all supposed to be

-Hates is 100% correct with the techno music. The only person I want to hear on the microphone is hyping the game we all spent a LOT of money travelling to play. Not about some anime bullshit. The lights, VERY loud DJ were VERY distracting during matches. I can completely see his point on that issue

-When the top 4 were established, I had to go find DFG and ask him, since people were complaining left and right and nobody wanted to say anything, that the finals need to start right now. Not sure who's original idea it was, but they had the idea of establishing top 4, THEN starting NVGA, THEN doing the original 4 finals, THEN NVGA finals. Confusing huh? Overall, the momentum was being sucked away and I had to inform him players were getting upset about this. So, after a while, he did start the finals. I'm not sure why there was such a delay, so I won't comment on that

-I'm strongly against the fact they let everybody in. To me, it was a slap in the face to all the people who travelled to multiple regionals (or even got 2nd/3rd/4th at a single regional). My overall question is, why do that? If people don't show up, they don't. But overall, there were a LOT of high level players there ready to duke it out, we didn't need the extra body count.

-I'm 100% with Cedric on the ride situation and cabs. Quite a few of us have spent money we didn't want to spend on a cab, simply because this could not be at a hotel, which would have been ideal.

As a side note, this stopped being "Nationals" last year IMO. Canada/Domincan Republic were allowed to enter, so it became internationals, which is fine. Just call it what it is. I think if you still call it internationals, still have regionals, still have solid rules and qualifiers, the same people will go IMO. Most people are happy the French came. Overall, like last year, there are room for improvements for Nationals.

100% agree with jaxel's points and my $0.02

negative - according to everything, i coulda skipped my regionals, flown straight to nationals, payed $20 and enter. so, lets make an agreement, have everyone agree, then change it. not cool.

trust. stated best was "arbitrary decision making."

accounting. money for plane tickets should be directly given to the winner of a regional. what plane ticket they choose to schedule can be done by theirself or choose to just keep the money. it really should be their choice and not an attempted forced situation.

positive - nationals created some serious competition. nvga has a lot of opportunity to make some changes for the better. hopefully first by taking responsibility for the negative aspects of the nationals.

Not sure who has the brackets for it but I do have the results.

Thugish deserves the nod as the best since he is the most consistent from Nats, Evo, and NVGA. There is no question about it.

And even more important than the consistency factor is that he won at least one of the tournaments mentioned.

This north american tournament could have been won by a korean, who didn't qualify at any event.
Laff, you're right. Kura would have had no chance in the "last chance" qualifier. Not as if he was beasting fools the whole time he was here or anything.

At this point only the top 8 from Evo, and top 4 from Nats matters on the ranking scale. Imo I think Nats was more competive because of how streamlined the comp was but that could be up for dispute.
Plus EVO Pool C. :) Also, the second Korean and myself didn't get a chance to really play in Nats. So your top 4 really SHOULD have read "Esom and three other scrubs." :)

Oh, and one of those PS3's was NOT PATCHED. That was pretty gay.

Has anyone heard from DFG yet? I know Chingachgook said he's slammed with work from taking the days off for SuperCon. DFG, we're dying to hear from you man.

Do you even know how many people were in nationals? DFG said he would hold a last qualifier if there were more people than spots open.

Run a qualifier and let top two in then, regardless of the number of open slots it's 100% a slap in the face to anyone who traveled to regionals and qualified. But from the sound of things, when you compare that to making more money.......

Anyway we've heard from a few CO players, some more animated than others, we really should let DFG speak his part on this. I swear to god if he comes in here and starts this post with "Yo, this is Dancing Fighter G"........

There was an agreement that the prize money was to be a guaranteed $4k (at least, DFG said the sponsors would bring in more), that SC4 nats would be the PRIMARY focus of Saturday (so shit started on time and there was no distractions), the tourney would be open to NATS QUALIFIERS ONLY (NO EXCEPTIONS) and that they'd have reliable staff to run the event smoothly.

Are you telling me NONE of this happened?
You have no idea how hard I was laughing at that last part!!!!!!!

C'mon, guys. There's nothing to defend here. What do you want him to say?... "LOL, this is DancingFighterG...

...

...

Good Games!"

Ha ha, now that I actually know ChaCha, I read all of his posts with his voice in my head, complete with Buffalonian accent.

Soo who did oof Lose too in the Day 2 tourney!?

Thugish, RTD, French, Su fairly consistent these past events.

Thugish Omega Krayzie still Top 3 IMO

ALthough i havent heard too many complaint about nationals...........Why wasnt jaxel running nationals again??
