SCV- New CHARACTER ideas

Soul Calibur needs a excessively vulgar character. Just screaming obscenities as he/she fights. That would be so fun lmao. The lil battlecry thing will be "FUUUUUUUUUUCCKKK!!!"

It would be funny, but since my little bro (7-years-old) loves the game, I'd prefer if they kept the T rating.

Though I admit I'll laugh every time I hear Ezio shout "Bastardo!" XD

Cervantes definitely needs to polish his "pirate etiquette" if he wants to avert Teen Friendly/Cap'N Crunch status in SCV, LMAO.

Lmao I know man it works the same for characters like Nightmare and Abyss (SCIII) They were "scary" in terms of appearance to me since I was only 11 or 12 when SCIII came out but the language never fitted them AT ALL

It does'nt matter if his origins are Babylonians Egptians or non-African, Zasalamel is black and will always be for his future incarnations..
Also I can’t really say if he kept his current incarnation since the beginning. I think yes, because of his SC4 ending. You can see that his appearance as a black man has not changed until nowadays, our modern days. .
He didn’t succeeded to die once for all and has not changed through history. He wants to take more advantage of the life. I think. He is just perfect. I can’t stop smiling. =)
And yes there was black people outside of Africa since the antiquity, (obviously they come from Africa, not from the Moon)
I think that Zasalamel was a black African who have been banned by his(Babylonian or Egyptian, I don’t know) tribe for having been disrespectful to his duty of ancient mage.
And just look, they represent one of the three mages who visited the birth of Jesus as a black man. I don’t remember his name; maybe Balthazar.
I can say that there was many blacks who won fame by their pragmatic side through History in and out of Africa( Black pharaohs).
The existence of some pharaohs of ancient Egypt who were black Nubian and the whole real African civilizations and kingdoms (Nubians, Méroé civilization, Ashanti, dahomey etc.) just have been ignored by some racist historian who were living in these times of slavery and colonization. These facts have been so harsh and rude for Africa I must say. Since most ancient Egyptians weren’t black they just didn’t consider Africa.
Thus zasalamel's background and where they situate him despite being black are tailored as a model of tolerance. Although he has been banned. Lool.
Soul Calibur takes place in a time in which slavery would just begin. Let me say that there were slavery(from arabs toward blacks) before the coming of the Europeans in Africa. Africa is a continent which has known so many invasions and slavery and the word “tribe” was used by in a pejorative derogatory primitive way by racists to accuse other people like African to not having any structured culture if you see what I mean once a great part of African splendors stolen or destroyed and its people overcomed.
I want to say that there was not only “Tribal Lions hunters” in Africa. It’s just that everything has been destroyed and stolen.by the victorious invader. But we must admit that the sand the sea-salt and the humidity of the African climate did their job of destruction. Anyway the proofs of Black African cultures (like statues etc)and structures are today recognized at their true values. They have been restored. And have now a great place in museums across the World.

Just buy an easyjet plane ticket and travel men! =)
That’s why when I see Zasalamel, I tell to myself that developpers paid tribute to the black people in general(everybody knows that black people come from Africa), not to the “African” people by showing him like this in the XVIth century. He is just universal.he is not stereotyped, not naked and all… I’m satisfied. Also Zasalamel reminds me of a statue of the black saint Maurice.(you can read his story on the internet.

That’s all for Zas!
Now I wonder what you do to not to see black characters in the other games.
A popular game like Soul Calibur should have a black female character in.
Here are other games who show black people in all their splendor who could inspire us Black African culture:
-Guild Wars Nightfall with Zasalamel’s sister Lool and the splendid, young and sophisticated Varesh Ossa who is unfortunately dead.( similar story with SC Siegfried’s one).

Even if she wears that awful blonde haircut ( I don’t thank the developers for that)
Street Fighter Elena’s background is great.
That’s all I know
With this, I hope Namco developpers, if they see that will make an effort to make this time a black woman or girl who could be Zasalamel’s sister or relative, who is sophisticated, elegant in the African way and radiant with the real black beauty (hair, lips nose, etc.)
If they do; then I would be really satisfied about namco and about the way video games or people see blacks and African people. If they don’t , then I don’t know and please don’t tell me about Angol Fear who rather irritated me because even in the game her appearance is not complete. Just look

http://vampire-moon.deviantart.com/art/Angol-Fear-PS3-Wall-156742659 lol
Is it a test from Namco on dark skinned people? I know that she’s an alien who is not adapted to the Earth yet that’s why her “manga” appearance in-game etc.
Some say that she's actually black.. This means that Soul Calibur took a really fantastic direction (not in the good way in my opinion). She could have been a fairy or something like that…
Maybe Ivy’s SC4 1p outfit did the same impression on people? Personally I didn’t like Ivy's SC4 outfit.
Soul Calibur 2 is the most realistic episode of the series in its general atmosphere. Even Siegfried and his realistic armors were in the party (no matter if he was Nightmare his 3rd costume shows him completely human). I really loved this.
Lisa La Mariposa from Dead or Alive has obvious African Ancestors despite her fighting style is lucha libre(Latino).
Zack is portrayal of the black who like to take holidays (I play to have fun what do you want, he’s a DJ). I loved his ending in Egypt. Damn they know black people.
Him and Helena in DOA4’s canonical ending…So romantic.
I don’t know if it’s a pity that they bleached Virtua Fighter 5 Vanessa Lewis skin an features.(I love Jeffry’s afro hair)…Maybe she’s a general portrayal of dark skinned women in general uncluding African women.
She must be in love with the beautiful white blonde Jacky Bryant quite as I am.lol.

To finish, this is my vision of Black people in general and in video games. Hope you are satisfied and this will help. That’s all there is to it folks.

From my understanding, this person appreciates Zasalamel because he represents African characters in a media that doesnt do so very often. My issue with it is two things:
1. He's giving Zas a bigger meaning than he actually has
2. It's hard to believe, but NONE of the characters in Soul Calibur can represent any of the countries they came from

I somewhat disagree with #2 when we have characters like Mitsurugi, whose basically a traditional, yet stereotypical samurai representing Japan.

When it comes to technicality though, Zasalamel doesn't represent any country because he can have the ability to reincarnate into any shape or form. That includes ethnicity and gender.

This is unless Zasalamel has a bias for wanting to reincarnate as men of African ethnicity, or heritage.

He may be a samurai, but that's a part of history. He cant represent Japan if that aspect of the culture no longer exists. The world in SC may be in the real world, but the maps and cultures are far different. For instance, many players identify the Alexandra family as Greek, but they were born as Ottomans in their time. Then theres the added fact that some characters dont have a direct origin (Setsuka, Tira, Zewi, etc), there's characters who live in the same nations (do Raph and Amy BOTH represent France even though it was a part of an empire), and some characters are rather difficult to be seen as representatives (Voldo representing Italy?)

The maps are based on historic times, of course, and actually, yes, samurai existed at that time, as well as that aspect of culture.

The reason why we identify the Alexandra family as "Greek" instead of Ottomans, is for many reasons:

1. Many players don't even care about the history, or don't even care to research it, because...well....this is a game, but the game itself makes sure to have the character's locations and in some cases, life, based on that timeframe. Probably the #1 reason of the three.
2. It's in many peoples' brains that Hephaestus, Sophitia's guide, is a "Greek" god, or an Olympian.
3. Sophitia and others are from present-day Greek, so people label them as Greek. Just like how Talim is identified as "Filipino" instead of being from Southern Asia, because she's from present-day Philippines.

Z.W.E.I. is really just a lazy way for Namco to not even do the research like they've been doing for other characters, and label the character as "Unknown" on everything and not even try to give him a backstory. It's like Z.W.E.I. just fell out of the sky with the wolf following behind him. At least with Viola, since we obviously know it's Amy, she has a backstory, but she does not remember it. Unless Z.W.E.I. had amnesia himself, there is really no excuse for it.

Characters like Setsuka could actually have one theory: She is a part of the whole "Europe going to Japan" deal during that time, and they've been so accustomed to their culture, like how Rock is with the Native Americans. In Setsuka's case though, I guess her parents left her in Japan.

Anybody ever stop to think that Zwei's stuff is "Unknown" for a reason and not "Lazy" on Namco's part. Besides I never saw anything say that the characters had to be 100% grounded in reality anyway.

This. he may very well have a backstory, but it'll be saved for the actual game for us to find out the reasons for his unknown birth place, age and ambitions.

If that's the case, then that's poor judgement on the players' part. That's how misconceptions are made. If anyone is familiar with Greek history, the Alexandra family would be considered Ottomans (it even says so on the character bios). The same thing can be said with Talim; where she was may be called the Philippines now, but it wasn't at that time. People in a country can change hundreds of years later; she probably doesn't come from the same origin/culture as Filipinos today. But you're right about it being a game. Players will see something and run with it, even if it's not really what it is.

I don't think ZEWI being unknown is lazy at all. It seems to me that his background is supposed to be mysterious and at the same time, it might not be important to him. I think the reason anyone would consider that lazy is because they're actively looking to see which country he would represent. Other characters are explicitly said to be from certain countries and since his origin is ambiguous compared to others, it'd be seen as sloppy work. If anything, that just comes to show that Namco doesn't really make nationality factor into the characters so much. That's one of the reasons why none of the characters in this game should be seen as representatives.

Characters like Setsuka could actually have one theory: She is a part of the whole "Europe going to Japan" deal during that time, and they've been so accustomed to their culture, like how Rock is with the Native Americans. In Setsuka's case though, I guess her parents left her in Japan.

But where from Europe would she be from? She can't represent the entire continent, especially if her attire isn't European at all. If she's supposed to represent any country from Europe, she isn't doing a good job. If Natsu really isn't ethnically Japanese, then she's no better. Like I said, I doubt Namco cares about that.

That is true. We'll see once the game releases whether his story is explained or not.

*waits for the game to release*

Uh, pretty sure the sisters bios say they are from the Ottoman Empire (Present day Greece).

*pulls out SC2*

edit: Actually just "Athens, Ottoman Empire (Turkey)", so yeah, hardly Namco's fault there.

Now Ivy's dad being count from SC1-4? That is their fault.
