EVO Update: Top 8

With the rest of the mods enjoying the nice, cool Vegas casino weather, I felt it was appropriate to update everyone with how yesterday's matches went if for whatever reason you're having trouble (like I initially was) finding the results/brackets, or maybe you're just new to the scene and not quite sure where to go for information.

With a full day off today (Saturday) before they finish out top 8 (Sunday), you gotta keep yourself occupied somehow, right? If you haven't been paying attention to the biggest and hypest tournament in the world, you'll be in for some surprises

Top 8

Winners:
Xephukai (USA) - Asta (also, Patroklos)
Something-Unique (USA) - Pyrrha
Shen Chan (SG) - Cervantes
CRNA|Ruka (JAP) - Patroklos

Losers:
Kura (KOR) - Patroklos
Woahhzz (USA) - Alpha Patroklos
Shining Decapon (JAP) - Tira
Kamaage (JAP) - Mitsurugi

TOP 8 STARTS AT 10 AM PST. DON'T MISS IT!!!!!

HEADLINES:
-France out!
In a surprising turn of events, both Keev and Kayane lost some tough (extremely hype) matches. Keev now has himself an official EVO nemesis having both losses come from the same player. [NOTE: The EVO bracket is incorrect for the Keev/Kura match; Keev did NOT win that match.]

-International players sans France having a strong performance!
If you were watching the stream and listening to the commentary, you probably noticed that even players like Bibulus were taken aback by the performance of foreign players not normally known for their SC dominance, such as the Singaporeans.

-MAJOR comebacks!
Although this is certainly true for many specific matches (there were SO many close matches to even begin to list), there were some players that have straight-up faced the gauntlet in terms of their bracket. Kamaage (who you'll notice is in the loser's side of top 8) was knocked into the loser's side second round... and hasn't looked back since, stringing along an impressive number of wins to get in to the final 8.

-Some interesting character selections...
We knew we were going to see a lot of Nightmare, Natsu, Mitsu and Violas (to name a few), but... regular Patroklos? Three of the top 8 are regular P players, and Xeph used him in certain match-ups. Looks like that shin kick is making waves. Not to mention, there's even a Japanese Tira that sneaked in there... although his dominance in some matches would certainly mock my use of the word "sneaked."

-Word of the day: Execution
Not just in the sense of killing someone (metaphorically speaking, of course), but also technical execution. So many rounds and matches were won because of clutch, high-difficulty moments... and some were lost because of wasted opportunities. A lesson to newer players: Your ability to execute when needed is crucial on a stage like this.

-Asia VS the US of A!
Of the final 8 spots, the US holds 3 (2 in winner's) while Asian players hold the other 5 (Japan with 3, Korea with 1, and Singapore with 1). With Europe being such an SC hotspot, how surprised is everyone that this game seems to have quite a following in Asia?!?!

-So many killers...
If EVO has taught us anything so far, it's that there are a lot of skilled players in Calibur V, and any one of them can take any given event on any given day. For instance, despite France not making top 8, that doesn't mean that they weren't prepared or didn't play strongly: Keev and Kayane's matches were some of the hypest of the day. Expect more players to surface and this game to have a long shelf-life.

========================

That's all I have for right now. I was not able to catch every match, so if there's something you feel is worth noting as a headline, feel free to comment and I'll add it to the main post. Otherwise, fire away with any of your comments/opinions on how the hypest event of the year has turned out thus far! Oh, and don't forget to throw out some predictions!

well this isn t the place to discuss low tiers...
But i really find funny this (look carefully at right/low corner):
http://8wayrun.com/attachments/scv-nerf-jpg.16806/

Btw i knew regular pat would go well :D yet i think he has much to show.

LOL Raphael. Poor guy...

That's because some of the old school X players can't adapt to their character not being top tier like in SCI-SCIV

Not being top tier was fine, which, even in 1.01 she wasn't top tier, just highly overused. Hilariously so, actually. Everybody and their mother had a pocket Leixia. Even the new players couldn't adapt, and just switched to Natsu, Pyrrha, or Alpha instead. (I didn't switch. Needless to say, I play the game a bit less now. lol.) And it makes some sense, honestly. Most of Leixia's biggest strengths are either done just as well by the game mechanics themselves, or specialized by other characters.

It's like Leixia's a decent character, but just has some of the most hilarious match-up difficulty post patch I've seen since SCIV. Still love her though. Go Leixia!

Congrats to Decapon. Also want to extend my congrats to Shen Chan for repping Cervy and damn I want that t-shirt!

..wow after 11 hours of evo SC watching yesterday, Im still a bit in shock regarding:
-the extreme skill level (pools and top 8)
-the asian dominance
-the depth of this game (people still finding new ways to dominate)

Lying in my hammock, there were several very near fall-out moments. The hours invested in watching all the pools matches were so worth it: http://www.twitch.tv/srkevo2/b/323884187

I have to say the thing I appreciated most was how all the people at the tourney played. Seemed to me the players who did the best were the ones who could switch between turtling/spacing and aggressiveness the best unlike previous SCs where turtling almost always tended to be the best course of action except for a few characters.

I think that shows people that this SC is far different from previous ones (and better for it, imo) and as such needs to be played differently.

People that say Leixia is in the same boat as Tira need to get their head checked. One of my training partners mains Tira, and when you face a good one you will realize she is not bad at all. Top Tier? Maybe, or maybe not. But she is no where near the bottom. I would love for Leixia to have some of Tira's damage...lmao.

All that means naught because Tira did not win EVO...Shining Decopon did. He won purely because of his immense skill and matchup knowledge. He is a great player and even though I was not able to watch the top 4 I knew he was going to win it. Great showing by the entire top 8... Especially Shen Chan and Woahhhz.

Well done Decopon, he did some amazing stuff. Completely shut down Cervy's post 4B BE game perfectly. Loved the read of delayed BT B+K and interrupted with Tira's 3aa. Also congrats to Shen Chan, played completely solid. Loved that 44K to iGDR trap.

Also well done to Japan as a whole, really showed they're a force to be reckoned with.

Does anyone know who put Decopon into losers? I can't remember.
lol cervys 4B BE game? lol i love it when they try to do that to me, i have the perfect awnser for it.

Omega DR wasn't at EVO because he's pissed that Namco didn't pay him the $7K for the SC World Tournament back on April 10.

Quit complaining about Leixia, it's annoying. She's just fine and no I will not argue with you, it's not like I could change your opinion anyways. You guys are like trying to convince a catholic that their religion isn't the only way to do things.

That's what I've always believed. The character can make it easier or harder on the player but if someone absolutely masters their character and the game as a whole, they can win no matter who they're using.

im so hapy bitchass pyrrah or omega pyrrah didnt make it to the grand finals, i hate pyrrah soo much soo anoying

I never said Leixia is bad. I just said she was in no way comparable to Tira. I think Leixia is low tier but she still has a lot of tools and pretty good frame data. Her damage makes some matchups really hard, sorry but that is the truth. She is better than most make her out to be though.

Maybe stop putting words in my mouth?

Oh get over it. People piss and moan all the time on this site. If you find it annoying, why are you here?

Besides, it's not like you're right. Nearly every Leixia player did drop her for a reason.

A couple things we learned at EVO

1. There are many great players from all parts of the world.
2. This game is very balanced.
3. If your name is Shen your prolly pretty fucking good at SC.

Thanks too everyone who had anything to do with making EVO possible!

Seriously, this is fucking annoying. If your perception of your main being weak bothers you so much that you can't help posting about it in a forum 8 times a day, maybe switch main or quit the fucking game ?

That being said, that was the first EVO I watched and was really impressed. The game certainly is very interesting to watch and Project Soul's vision with this game and their decisions have become clearer in my mind in light of this tournament. Decopon, ShenChan, ShenYuan, Keev and Woahhzzz were definitely entertaining to watch. I finally understand that these player rely on their instincts as much as their matchup knowledge. I saw unsafe moves get unpunished, highs in strings not being crouched and combos being dropped, and this made me appreciate the human element much more. It is much more about getting in your opponent's mind and intimidating him/her than playing a flow chart based on the wiki's frame data and I got to appreciate that a lot.

A big thanks to Project Soul, Namco Bandai, EVO staff, the stream providers and especially the players for entertaining our asses :)
