How should the next SC handle downloadable content?

How do you guys feel about paid DLC? As a 90's gamer I wasn't too happy when the 7th gen came around and we started seeing extra content you had to pay for instead of everything being on the disc like it was before but I'm at a point where I'm okay with it now. With video games being so expensive to make now developers need to make up for the cost somehow and I'd rather have optional paid DLC than to have to pay $80-$100 for the game itself. So yeah I wouldn't mind seeing a Chronicles of the Sword 2 DLC and a few extra characters as long as they charge a fair price.

When it comes to SC, I don't really mind paying for the DLCs, because it's basically my "main" game, and I don't buy DLCs for anything else. I think the way SCV did DLCs was fine. CaS parts, DLC character (although... why the fluff Dampierre..?) and music from the past games. I don't mind paying for that. Though if a "preorder, collector's edition" whatever bollocks with extra DLCs or "exclusive preorder content" somes out, I'll buy that. I'd welcome some free DLC (obviously), like for example stages.

DLC are supposed to be fanservices. Having to pay for what is locked on the disk and for things that should be free (P1-P2 costumes)? That's daylight robbery. I would wait for SC6 complete edition (à la MK), because I want to buy a game, not a kit.

Is there really any difference though between DLC that's disc-locked on release, and DLC that's already finished when the game launches but not added to the disc until later on? Just because it's not added to the disc before launch that doesn't mean it's not already finished by then. Besides when it comes down to it all DLC is added to your game eventually or else you wouldn't be able to play against someone who has a character that you don't. It's there in your game data but not unlocked for you until you buy it.

I will agree about alt costumes though. It's kind of silly that they nickle and dime you for that.

Actually, a DLC that is finished before the release is also something I totally hate. It's really saying "so we're gonna milk you for something that could be included in the base pack but in the end we decided we loved your money more, so just buy that title screen for $60 and we'll make you pay for each new game mode and character."

That's really a reason why I've stopped playing video games as much as I did before... "Season pass" and "planned DLCs" are a real cancer to video games, and far worse are the people rising to the bait...

Bringing this up again with the knowledge that SCVI is likely about to be announced. This is something important, because after a game like DOA5 I'm worried about other fighting games being milked for all they're worth. I support DLC when it's actually EARNED, as in they work on it after launch and don't charge you Day 1, separate items by stores you pre-order from, give you in-game advantages, and take out content from the base game to sell later. As in, the shit I expect from EA. I want to see what others think now that the topic is more relevant.

Basically, DLC I approve of would be:

  • Costume pieces. Substantial ones that are actually worth it that are developed post-launch. There's all sorts of possibilities with this that's almost endless.
  • Characters. Preferably brand new characters that aren't locked on-disk, though I expect there will be DLC guests and DLC characters from past games that didn't make the initial cut. Maybe they could do "Seasons" where characters are introduced, but tread VERY lightly regarding this. SFV did this as an excuse to launch bare-bones. Don't go that route.
  • Modes. Now, there are some modes that should be in the game by default. Such as Story, Arcade, Online, Practice, Versus, and Creation. None of those should be DLC. But including new modes post-launch besides that would be welcome. For example, Chronicles of the Sword is a fan-favorite from SCIII that many want back. Developing it for launch might take away too much, but adding post-launch would be great. Especially if there's a versus mode for it against online players.
  • Story. As with the seasons above, tread very lightly. With SCVI having a major focus on story elements, a good idea is to expand on the story post-launch or introduce side stories (works very well in tandem with the DLC characters mentioned above). But do not make the story itself DLC, that would be a bad idea.
That's all I have for now. But I figured now that we're close to announcement, DLC is a good thing to discuss because you know they're going to have it.

Don't forget DLC music packs from prior games. That doesn't take much work for them (unlike re-releasing higher resolution classic outfits) and there's always a nostalgia factor you can count on.

Also, if there are characters as DLC, it stands to reason that there will be accompanying stages

Actually I was hoping for a music selector mode like what DOA5 has, with all past themes together for you to use as you please. That'd be sweet.

I think SC6 will probably have a season pass, since Tekken 7 did it and because it's the trend right now.

Also, what about DLC characters? That wasn't possible before, but now we can have that. I have sneaking suspicion that they would add DLC guest characters for maximum profitability, but this would be a good chance to bring back old favorites that somehow wouldn't make the cut
I think they'll include more guest characters in the season pass, like in Tekken. I doubt S6 will include old favorites as DLC in any form, since Tekken 7 refuses to do that. Tekken 7 has had multiple chances to add classic characters that were left out, like Lei, Anna, Julia, etc., but instead they chose to go with Geese and Noctis. These guest characters are fine, but pretty much no one actively wanted them, whereas many people wanted Lei and everyone else. Unfortunately I think SC6 will do something similar, and we might see some classic characters missing from the roster while guest characters fill up the DLC spots.

Fortunately Harada isn't making that decision for this game. SC is very different from Tekken. We'll have to see.

I have to separate every single type of DLC so I can express everything I think. I'll separate them into things that SHOULD or SHOULD NOT happen:

CHARACTERS

- Relevant characters that appear in the story and we know are fighters, but were not relevant enough to be placed in actual fights in the game.
- Old characters being introduced again, maybe even those who had clone movesets or whose movesets were inherited by others, but now being given a new style. Maybe add Hwang even if we have Yun-Seong, or Ashlotte, even if we have Astaroth, but have both of them with new gameplay.
- Premiere skins - Like in Injustice 2, these skins are essentially other characters with the same playstyle, only changing name and voice, a character inside another. A simple way to add multiple characters with the same moveset. As long as its not overused, of course.

- Characters that already appear fighting in the story - If they are in the game and function in fights, either make them playable by default, as unlockables or not at all. Making DLC of in-game content is shitting on players.
- Large number of guests. Guests are fine, but if there are way too much of them, specially as DLC, its incredibly annoying.

COSTUMES AND CAS

- Premiere skins (see third topic of CHARACTERS section)
- Alternate costumes for default characters that don't take slots from CaS mode, they should also include the parts of these costumes for other characters in CaS.
- Costume bundles with specific different themes, maybe even outside SC themes

- Parts of alternate costumes currently in the game for CaS - These should be, at best, unlockable in some way in the game, or unlocked by default for creation. Nobody should pay for parts we already have access to in the game. Again, making DLC of in-game content is shitting on players.
- Bundles with random stuff - If people like a theme, it makes sense for CaS parts to be bundled in themes, but if they are bundled with a "random" theme, they should be free updates or free DLC, because people are more likely to want ONE of these parts.

STORY

- There isn't much to say about this. Side chapters, prologues and epilogues, or even joke/what-if chapters are okay, as long as they take some time and not be just one or two fights. They SHOULD, however, come with something else, like unlockable costumes, CaS parts or even characters.

- Short chapters and chapters that bring only side stories to the game and nothing else in content might as well be added as updates or just "Encyclopedia" pages. They're not worth making DLC of.

In terms of fighting games that are guilty of having too many guests in one game....

*cough* INJUSTICE 2 *cough*

T7 is just a systems test for TxSF, so they fit pretty well.
Also they are really well done.

Which is itself sad, using a canon game aka T7, especially since the last canon game Aka T6 was out in 2009 (and even 2007 in Arcade)... as a Test of an upcoming other non cross over game, sigh no comment.

Which is itself sad
Yep. I pre-ordered deluxe and was pretty sad when it turned out to be a barebones systems-test game with buggy as shit (on PS4) online and non-existent offline content, and the worst customizing in the franchise.
Gameplay itself is great though and 2D systems are implemented very nicely, TxSF when it'll finally happen most probably will be a great game.
