Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Anybody else find it so odd with Sophie and Mitsurugi getting appearances based almost completely on their SC1 versions while other designs have been significantly modified?
To be fair, Sophie and Mitsurugi's SC1's designs were nowhere near as ugly as some of the others *cough Taki Nightmare and Ivy*

Don’t get why Nightmare is blue since he’s supposed to be Siegfried after the ending. Guess the meaty texture of the armor looked M-rated.

I’m guessing Maxi is going to have a sleeveless version of his SC1 appearance with some SCV elements.

All of the costumes ('cept Zasalamel) have been based on SC1 designs. They've just thrown in some extra bits to make the costumes more destructible (as is the case with Kilik, Xianghua and Nightmare), and made the ladies (and Siegfried) expose more skin where possible.

Sieg's current costume reminds me of his sc4 2p more than his SC1 one . Maybe it's because they have similar color scheme still shape of pauldrons and the breastplate part definitely looks more similar to his SC4 look minus the chain mail.
They probably wanted to give him a topless armor break and choose this way which looks a bit out of character but whatever he still looks great.

Mother fuckers didn’t believe in the Sieg.
Boy that new VA is not good though. Like at all.
Especially in comparison to the last 2 Sieg VA’s.

Yay for Siegfried, but I don't like his outfit. It's over-embellished and under-armoured (why are his upper arms exposed like that?). It also looks bottom-heavy, and the scarf is a useless addition.

And I really don't like his English VA. I guess Crispin Freeman set the bar too high.

It's great to see Proving Grounds and Indian Port again though.

If Siegfried really needed the bare arms, maybe lose the armor on one of his arms? But it’d be ironic since he’s also Nightmare. The armor looks dumb over bare skin.

Why now when none of his outfits ever had that?

It’s also a shame he and Mitsurugi lost their facial hair. At least the latter has a bit of a goatee. Would the former even be able to shave with that cursed armor?

It’ll be kind of ironic should Voldo and/or Astaroth get pants.

  • OST
But is this Xianghua's theme or Kilik's? If you compare the have same sounding -The New Legend- but it is more upbeat ...
maybe can even share stages like Soul Calibur II or IV but repeating the same theme would be ridiculous especially after the Soul Calibur V improvement.
  • Siegfried's armour
He uses the same armor of Nightmare, probably the breastplate was destroyed by Kilik & Friends and he replaces by another, since it was already established his story begins* when Nightmare ends* ...

  • Character reveal
There was no Japanese trailer or updates from famitsu, they probably want to play with my feelings, waiting for me to sleep to reveal another character

The thing that kills me about his voice is that Kirk Thornton is by no means a bad voice actor, but this is far from his best work. Not quite sure what went wrong. I mean, Siegfried sounds younger than before, so maybe the problem is that they had him attempt a younger voice? Which makes the casting of a 61 year old man a bit odd.

Siegfried and Siegmare? I wonder if they'll have any dialogue between them. Never been a big fan of Sieg so... :E

Also, his voice acting sounded good in places but then really bad in others, almost like he had two different actors.

Namco's been pretty smart to recycle the assets:

Siegfried's lower armor (from his hip faulds down) are essentially like Nightmare's armor but recoloured.

The only difference I can glance is Siegfried has some pattern on the bottom of his knee poleyn (that would match his wrist guards) whereas Nightmare does not.

It helps share some continuity (cements the lore that Sieg and Nightmare are related) and is less work for the artist as well.

It suggests that Siegfried won't factor in the main story line and will never interact with Nightmare as a separate entity.

Some aesthetic comments:
Positive:
  • His art work looks solid as usual. This is because you don't realize he has exposed shoulders/armpits.
  • The scarf reminds me of SC5 Patroklos' 2p scarf, but more elaborate. I was expecting a fuzzier fur scarf (like SC5 Hilde)
  • Silver armor + white scarf colour palette combined with Sieg's blonde flowing hair makes him look a dashing knight.
  • His chest armor is highly detailed and looks really elaborate.
  • The beginning of his Critical Edge looks really cinematic (the camera angles, the way Siegfried winds up, the particle effects).
  • His gameplay animations remain intact and look fluid and convey momentum/inertia well.
  • Siegfried attacks with the flat of his blade during his RE? I'll need to investigate when more gameplay videos come out.
Negative:
  • Siegfried's exposed shoulders/armpits throws off the entire set. Its a big problem, especially considering he has shoulder spaulder magically connected to his bare flesh.
  • Mitsurugi's shoulder armour at least seems to be connected to his chest piece.
  • Siegfried historically always had his green suit or chain mail underneath. The exposed flesh on a knight really looks half-assed randomly generated CAS and makes it seem Project Soul forgot to complete his armor rather than being an intentional design.
  • The shoulder pauldron and the elbow armor look overdesigned in terms of the excessively decorative ridges (like the SC5 pre-order White knight armor). Yes I know i said I liked the chest armor being elaborate, but having the shoulder/forearm armor overdesigned is too much. You don't want to end up taking design cues from SC4 Seigfried's icicle mess.
  • Because he shares Nightmare's lower armor, but lacks Nightmare's upper body proportions (ie his giant monster arm) Seigfried looks bottom heavy because his spaulders are "normal" sized. I would understand if the design team had to exaggerate the size of the spaulders to make him look more balanced.
  • The Critical Edge's final swing (the 2nd hit) is disappointing considering the setup animation. The way the victim gets flipped in the air in the 2nd hit is not a satisfactory pay off and you get confused whether Nightmare is getting smashed away by Siegfried's super move or a gust of wind.
  • You lose the belief of the weight of the weapon (and thus its power) when Siegfried is able to cold-stop the backswing animation in his pose, rather than show how the momentum of the giant zweihander. Compare this to Siegfried's win pose where you visually can tell that the zweihander is a hefty bad-ass blade.
  • Siegfried in SC4/5 had really cool looking super moves that convey he was a protagonist with an impactful attack so I had my expectations high.

Maybe everything will make sens once we play Story mode.

My only concern with sieg so far is his voice, but i'm confident his japanese will be nice, so it don't matter much in the end.

A few thoughts:
Siegfried had a HUGE personality shift between SCI to II onwards, Sieg was an angry emo boy in both SE and SC1, so it makes sense he sounds a bit edgy and emo.

The bare parts of his Armour are probably for the lore, Nightmare only bare part was his mutated arm, so it is possible the designers wanted to represent Sieg showing some skin as a means of reminding himself he is no longer in the armor, which makes even more sense since if you break Nightmare's helmet you see Sieg.

Sieg being in also strengths Vergeben's source, thus my hope for Cassandra.

Also, I think some designs look better on paper 2D, this one looks pretty lame in game, but on the design works you can tell what they were going for.

It's cool to have him back with a kind of unusual personality (I didn't play Soul Edge or SCI).
The voice is something I'll have to get used to, doesn't sound too much like Siegfried to me for now.
The CE is amazing, I might understand the complaint about the finishing blow, but it still looks so powerful!
His hair is the only disappointment in the reveal. I honestly hope they'll fix it, because it simply looks lame.
The stages are awesome, just as the trailer overall.
