Soul Calibur VI: General discussion

Raphael and Tira on the top row, Astaroth in the second row, Voldo on the third row, Talim and Cervantes on the fourth row. CaS bottom left.

The only three slots that are potential mysteries are the three in the middle on the bottom row. I could see:

Seong Mi-na, Grøh's Father, Hwang
-or-
Cassandra, Edge Master, Aeon

Michael Murray, one of the big wigs for Tekken just tweeted:

“It’s only been a year since release, and E3 isn’t a good place to announce anything but a new title, so don’t know why ppl would expect any Tekken news here...”

Maybe this means SCVI will take the lion’s share of the 30 min slot that they have?

Or maybe they’re going to be talking about DBFZ?

Hmmmmm... the plot thickens...

Alright, so I've collected my thoughts and have a few things to say. First, general comments:
  • Loving the new stages. The meadow stage is gorgeous, the sand effect in the desert stage is some of the best-looking sand I've ever seen in a video game, and Kaer Morhen looks better than in the Geralt trailer. It's also good to finally get a confirmation that the burning stage is Ostrheinsburg Castle, a classic location in the series and quite important to the lore. Also, Indian Port is huge!
  • That new UI is sexy. I'd gotten used to the sketch-styled lifebars, but I was never really a big fan and I'm glad to see a much nicer interface overall. Little touches like the swords in the KO message add some much needed flare, and the fact that they're complementing the woodcut-engraving aesthetic with actual wooden surfaces brings it all together quite nicely.
  • The character select looks darker overall too, and it looks a lot better that way. Extra points for displaying the amazing 2D artwork before choosing a character, implemented exactly the way I envisioned it. It makes it look a whole lot more polished and honestly could be the best looking character select screen to date in my book.
  • On the topic of the selection screen, more slots! I'm glad they decided to increase the character count, even if just by three. Having ten characters left to be revealed instead of seven sure makes speculating a lot more fun.
  • There's also those suspicious white circles by the lower corners... unlockables, or DLC? Some speculate that they might be "previous" and "next" buttons to indicate multiple pages, but that sounds far too optimistic and makes little sense considering there's also a random button in the alleged main page. I'm also not sure how that would work with two players choosing characters at the same time. Who knows though? Only time will tell!

Now's the time for some roster speculation! Talim will obviously be the next character to be revealed; Okubo literally just teased her mere hours ago. Voldo and Tira have also been rumored by multiple sources, and are both iconic characters that could generate a lot of hype at a mainstream event like E3. Based on that, I'd wager that's what we're getting tomorrow, along with a newcomer perhaps.

That leaves us with six slots, exactly the remaining number of characters left from the original Soul Calibur! Those characters are Astaroth, Cervantes, Rock, Hwang, Mina, and Lizardman. Given that this is supposed to be a remake of that game, there's certainly a nonzero chance that we get just that. However, if the popularity poll has shown anything is that SC2 introduced some of the most popular characters in the series, including Cassandra, Raphael, and Yun.

Given this conflict, I've come up with two scenarios: the SC1 route, and the mixed route. Both of these assume that CaS will be a slot in the middle that appears once you've made a custom character, and that Groh is the only newcomer in the main roster. Both of these assumptions can be easily overridden, so just replace one or two characters with CaS or a newcomer if you're not feeling as optimistic as I am.

Either way, I doubt tomorrow will allow us to determine which of these is closer to reality, unless we get something completely unexpected like Rock, Setsuka, or Hilde. My personal hope is that we get Cervantes, Rock, Astaroth, Aeon (SCV style) and Raphael. Don't really care about the rest tbh, though Cassandra would be cool.

Regardless, GET HYYYYYYPEEEEE!!1!

I think Cassandra has a better shot than Mina and Rock, in which case Cassandra would be besides Mitsu and Raphael on the other end, as they seem to have an antagonistic relationship.

I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow we get the SC2 peeps, like 4 characters sound like wishful thinking, but I wouldn't be surprised if we get Talim, Cass, Raph and Yun.

I'm leaning towards the mixed scenario.

My current guess, including italics for alternate guesses.

Papa Groh, Salia / Siegfried / Zasalamel / Nightmare / Cervantes, Tira
-
Aval seems to be connected to SC so Papa Groh could be the Cervantes equivalent. Also both are fathers to certain characters with malfestation including the SC version. Salia and Tira alternately are Siegfried's and Nightmare's henchwomen.

Xianghua / Maxi / Sophitia / Astaroth / Ivy
-Astaroth is Maxi's enemy plus Kilik's and Nightmare's allies are on either side which may explain why Ivy isn't opposing Cervantes. Also Ivy might not be aware of the relationship from the beginning in the story.

Yoshimitsu / Kilik / CaS, Mimic / Groh / Voldo, Tira
--Yoshi and Voldo are the closet things to rivals. And Yoshi and Tira are also ninja/assassin types. After the SCV fiasco, I don't want to see a mimic but I'm leaving that as an option.

Talim / Mitsurugi / Geralt / Taki / Raphael, Korean
-Talim only really interacted with the not-so-likely Koreans although otherwise she and Raph are the relevant SCII newcomers)

Inferno, Papa Groh, Mimic, Boss, CaS / Cassandra, Korean / Voldo, Tira / Lizardman / Random (That last row is confusing. Might be the minor characters. The lower-left corner feels odd being across from the random select. Sophitia being in the middle across from Geralt makes me doubt for other Greeks unless Cassie and Lizzie are "rivals." Voldo and Tira's slots are easily interchangable.)

Raphael would go to the left of Siegfried, because his original SoulCalibur II story basically had him attempting to become the next Siegfried. He failed spectacularly, of course, but he was the one who crippled Soul Edge, and allowed Siegfried to break free. So he's right there with him.

Tira would go to the right of Nightmare, because she just really is SoulEdgesexual, after all, and hangs on its every word. There's no one else fit to serve this role. A bonus parallel with Raphael / Tira exists in that they were fighting each other in the opening of SoulCalibur III.

Astaroth would go opposite Maxi because they are very obvious rivals, and Maxi is on Team Xianghua/Kilik, while Astaroth is on Team Ivy/Aeon.

Voldo would go to the right of Grøh because he serves Soul Edge by his own reasons, much like Yoshimitsu destroys evil for his own reasons. Voldo and Yoshimitsu also had a tiff when Voldo stole the Yoshimitsu sword, so there's a bonus there as well.

Talim would go to the left of Mitsurugi because she's the purest of all beings, so she would definitely belong on the far left side more than others. The only other spot that she might could occupy would be the bottom middle slot, since she really represent balance more than anything else, though by the purest means necessary, she would oppose Soul Calibur just as well if it's as sinister as it is in SoulCalibur IV/V.

Cervantes would go to the right of Taki because he's obviously on Soul Edge's side, being its original host, and also this parallels Ivy's position.

Custom character slot would go in the bottom left corner, to mirror the random slot. See SoulCalibur V.

The bottom middle left and bottom middle right slots would have to be a pair of oppositions, where my mind goes to either Seong Mi-na and Hwang, since Hwang seeks Soul Edge for the sake of Korea and Seong Mi-na sees Soul Edge's evil and sets out to save him, or Cassandra and Aeon, since Cassandra seeks to save Sophitia, obviously good, and never really loses sight of that goal, while Aeon goes mad and loses his mind more and more over time thanks to the curse of the lizard. Koreans or Greeks, it's anyone's call.

The middle bottom slot would go to someone who is neutral, much like Zasalamel and Geralt. Sophitia's neutrality, I suppose, is because she's at the will of both swords, only really wanting to protect her family, and she's used both swords to accomplish this goal. Edge Master seems a very solid fit, since he represents all styles equally, both good and evil. Alternatively Grøh's unconfirmed father might also fit, depending on his goals, it may be that he really is more like Zasalamel in that he just wants freedom, not particular about either sword that gets that goal, while Grøh himself opposes Kilik in his personal rivalry, so he picks a side. If, for the sake of argument, Talim was here, then Cassandra could take her slot on the left, and the Koreans could be on either side of Talim. That would be my best guess, anyway.

No one is considering a possible (or more) new character , already confirmed by Okubo.
Probably because many people want old favorites back than having new characters. Despite the increase of three slots that is still not enough. Ideally I want those for Cassandra, Yun-Seong and Hilde personally.

I want to be optimistic and assume and say for example clones like Rock and Astaroth share a slot and Seong Mina with the already confirmed Kilik.

Anything is possible at this point. I can only hope for the best.

If Salia is real, She could be the Ezio to Aeon’s Kratos I’m guessing.

Kind of hope the boss stage is like the SC2 version but maybe with lava.
